It wasn’t any secret that the Xbox 360 was getting a price cut in the next week or so, and now it’s official — Major Nelson just confirmed that as of September 5th, the Arcade will be $199, the Pro will be $299, and the Elite will be $399. No motion controller, goofy Live starter pack, or tweaked controller to be found, but we’re not arguing with price cuts.
Update: Here’s the Microsoft press release.

While the HD format wars are over, Blu-ray still has a long way to go before it can tackle its main competitor: DVD. Many consumers still haven’t converted to Sony’s next-gen format, and Samsung UK director Andy Griffiths doesn’t believe there’s much time left for Sony’s format. “I think it [Blu-ray] has 5 years left, I certainly wouldn’t give it 10″, Griffiths told Pocket-lint in an interview.
The time to capitalize on Blu-ray is now, the Samsung head said. “It’s going to be huge”, he told Pocket-lint. “We are heavily back-ordered at the moment.” The company is one of few that’s heavily invested in the format, with numerous Blu-ray players available on the market.
There will always be new formats on the horizon, but we find it unlikely that Blu-ray will extinguish in so little time. With HD adoption still slowly growing, so too will Blu-ray’s momentum. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see where home video stands in the next decade.

Fear not, UK friends, you will be getting the eye-pleasing, battery-draining PSP-3000 just like everyone else, but it seems you won’t be getting quite as many bundle options as others in Europe. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the silver PSP-3000 bundle with Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters and the black PSP-3000 bundle with a 4GB Memory Stick won’t be making it to the UK, at least initially, leaving you with only the Go! communication, FIFA, Harry Potter, and Buzz! Master Quiz bundles to choose from. That, as you may have noticed, doesn’t include a stand-alone PSP-3000 option, but Sony assures us that’ll be arriving as well sometime after the bundles are released.

Short and sweet update this week, but nothing to be sniffed at. Two demos and two add-on packs mean there’s something for pretty much everyone. If you’re into driving, hockey or Haze (yeah, we thought not), that is. Warhawk fans have probably already grabbed last week’s booster pack, but those new to the game might be tempted by the low-price triple combo pack. Here’s the full release list:
Playable content
- Pure demo (free)
- NHL 2K8 demo (free)
Add-on content
- Warhawk “Triple Combo” pack (£7.99/€11.99 — contains all three booster packs)
- Haze “Destruction” pack (£3.49/€4.99)
Videos
- Movement episode 5, part 2 — “London” (includes 8 videos)
Wallpapers and themes
- 4x SoulCalibur 4 wallpapers

Quite possibly the biggest feature for this year’s NBA game from SCEA’s San Diego Studios is the addition of The Life, a story a mode which chronicles the player’s journey from the streets to the NBA. This first trailer highlighting the single player campaign looks pretty epic — will this be able to differentiate itself from the other NBA games coming out this year?

Resident Evil fans know how bad the RE movies are. Hopefully Resident Evil: Degeneration — the CG movie featuring a seven-year Claire and Leon reunion — will pick up the pieces and make everything good again. It won’t be too long before we find out the answer to that as the Sony Pictures film is set to hit stores this winter.
If you’re just dying to know more about this direct-to-Blu-ray film release, Blu-ray.com scored some skin-crawling details regarding the zombie flick. Video will be presented in “1.78:1 1080p AVC” which is complemented by a “5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.” With specs like that, stepping into the world of survival horror won’t ever be the same. In addition to that info, a full list of Blu-ray Extras can be found after the break.

Evidently fearing some outbreak of freedom and excitement, Sony has notoriously guarded its PSP’s WiFi access closely, adding features such as Remote Play at a snail’s pace, and keeping such obvious adds as “ad-hoc” over the internet at bay. But no longer(ish). Sony is bringing ad-hoc online multiplayer to the PSP this fall, with a firmware update to allow the portable to network over the PS3. You’ll also be able to get social during gameplay, with text and voice chat in the new online mode. Additionally, the PSP is finally barging on to the PlayStation Store via WiFi, and Sony’s going to kick things off with a free downloadable game, “Mainichi Issyo Portable.” The best news is that this is compatible with all three PSP generations, so just because you can’t afford The Screen of Awesomeness doesn’t mean you’re out in the cold.

Capcom, in a Q&A conference call for their Q1 financial results, expressed confidence in the PS3. When asked about whether they felt the PS3 install base was large enough to support big-budget titles like Resident Evil 5, Capcom responded with the following: “We believe that PS3 has finally reached full swing after looking at the success of Metal Gear Solid 4, as well as future large-scale title lineups. In addition, some reduction in the PS3’s price was announced at the 2008 E3, and we can expect its spread to increase by next March when our Resident Evil 5 for PS3 will be released.”
However, they haven’t become Sony fanboys or anything. “We are not only focusing on PS3, we would also like to spread our supply of software evenly between Wii and Xbox 360 while their markets in the world increase in a similar manner to PS3.” Either way, publisher after publisher have no choice but to see the newest sales figures and acknowledge the PS3’s success.

Sure, you may have your fancy vibrating controllers and liquid-injecting touch screens, but Takayuki Iwamoto wants you to play with the air. Iwamoto and some of his buddies at the University of Tokyo have come up with a way to use focused ultrasound to create manipulable virtual objects in space. Using multiple transducers, the “Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display” creates an acoustic radiation pressure field. Holding your hand in the field allows you to “feel” the object, manipulate it, and feel response. Right now, the system only creates a vertical field, but you had better bet that Iwamoto is working on that. As for suitable applications, interest has already been shown from both industrial and gaming developers. No word on the hentai industry taking note, but that can’t be too far away. Check the video after the break to see this tech in action.

It’s complete! Finally, we now know where all five American LittleBigPlanet pre-order bonuses can be located. The fifth piece, Narito Sackgirl, has now been revealed for Best Buy. With Kratos Sackboy available at Gamestop, a LBP sticker book at Circuit City, the canvas pouch at GameCrazy, and a digital game guide at Amazon, it’ll definitely be difficult to decide which retailer to order from. We’ll leave you to decide the right choice.
Now, how about those not blessed enough to live in the USA? Don’t fear — you haven’t been forgotten. Plans for pre-order bonuses are still being ironed out. Canadians will only be getting two pre-order items: Kratos and Nariko in-game models. Kratos can be found at EB Games/Gamestop, while Nariko’s retailer has yet to be revealed. Europeans can get Nariko from Play.
[Thanks Brendan!]
