QNAP Turbo NAS Applications

QNAP has revealed that it supports new applications such as Surveillance Station and QPKG software package platform on its Turbo NAS series (TS-109/ 209/ 409). This means QNAP NAS users will be able to upgrade their server firmware to version 2.1.0 or later if they want to make use of these new applications. The Surveillance Station offers users a truly secure IP-based surveillance system, where they can record video of up to two IP cameras to the QNAP NAS without the need for a PC. You can simply use the Internet Explorer browser to check out live audio and video monitoring, playback, and camera configuration.

Nextar Wireless Speakers

Since summer’s here already and you’re all ready to strip down to your swimsuit, why not consider the Nextar wireless speakers? All you need to do is hook up a compatible MP3 player to the Bluetooth-enabled dock and you’re good to go. Of course, you’ve got to make sure that the dock itself stays far and dry away from the pool. As for the wireless speaker, it can be left to bob on the pool, gently moving wherever the waves carry it to. The Nextar wireless speakers will retail for $119 a pop.

MetroPCS may not have the largest wireless footprint in the States, but they did take a jab at the larger two CDMA carriers by announcing their intention to take on any Verizon and Sprint customers ready to jump ship — as well as any “compatible” devices they may want to bring along with them. Sprint already supposedly does this (although we’ve still yet to hear of it actually really happening), but the specifics of MetroPCS’s MetroFlash seem equally unclear. It doesn’t sound like they’ll reprogram just any CDMA device that walks through their doors, though, just the ones they’ve had a chance to test on their network. Definitely kills the buzz (and the number of devices that can be ported), but a little open is still kind of better than totally closed, right?

AppleAnalysts love to come up with all sorts of conjecture based on history, numbers, and general guesswork. In this case, FBR Research analyst Craig Berger has a few predictions to give us regarding the future of Apple’s iPod and iPhone lines. We’ll keep them short and sweet here and leave the static mulling to you. First, he expects an updated, lower-priced iPod nano in the near future along with product refreshes for both the iPod classic and touch. That sounds about right, as Apple is almost due for updates of those products anyway. As far as Apple’s production rate, he says Apple has increased iPod production around 15 percent and sees Apple shipping 15 million iPhone 3G by the end of the year (he’s a big fan of the number “15″). Nothing really surprising here, but if all this pans out, Apple will dig deeper into the smart phone market while tightening its stranglehold on the PMP landscape.

Ebooks Are Just Not Good Enough

Piper Jaffray & Company have conducted a limited internet survey (344 respondents) that concluded that roughly two-thirds would not buy an e-book, even if the price was low. Although any limited survey has to be interpreted with caution, this is not surprising by any means. The bottom line is that the perceived goal of e-books, which is emulating the paper reading experience, is far from being fulfilled. It is true. Additionally, content has not yet reached a critical mass and the delivery system is still primitive. What can be done now is to expose as much consumers as possible to current e-books because the idea of “electronic paper” is really cool, but we need color, better resolution, better design, better content…

D-Link to launch VoIP Phone

D-Link has plans to roll out a new SIP/DECT dual-mode VoIP phone as well as a small-size home security surveillance system next month, helping the company expand its current lineup of 802.11n draft 2.0 products. I guess this is but a logical progression for D-Link considering how they’ve been in the networking business for a fair number of years already. Home surveillance systems are doing pretty well no matter which country you’re in, since every man would want to protect his castle.

Brother MFC-6490CW Printer

Brother’s MFC-6490CW is an all-in-one color inkjet printer that offers color printing, faxing, and scanning into a single device, supporting extra large printing as well. It won’t break the bank with a $300 price tag, and will help you save lots of dough in the long run since you no longer need to run to the printers if you ever need 11″ x 17″ ledger prints. Great for scanning large amounts of text as well instead of being limited to just A4/letter sizes. Being wireless, it is compatible with 802.11b/g networks, but sadly misses out on draft-N. No idea on when the MFC-6490CW will ship though.

CDT GPS Looks Different

Talk about a radically different GPS navigation system with portable media player capabilities - the CDT GPS PMP (so many Three Letter Acronyms!) amazingly retails for just $102. It features a 3″ touch screen display and does the whole gamut of audio and video formats. Interesting to note the hand grips located at the side though, does this mean you’re getting this for a fast driver since you’ll be holding onto the CDT GPS PMP for dear life while giving directions to your destination?

DIY Lemon Light

The Lemon Light is a DIY project that is powered by…a lemon. Yes, this portable light uses a fruit to provide you with some light, making it a great camping device when the clouds are obscuring the sun to power your solar panel, without a power outlet in sight for the next 50 miles. This isn’t the first fruit-powered project to be featured, but it is definitely interesting. Best of all is, you can always have some lemonade once you’re done with it.

Ozone Concept Car

Going green is the new pink it seems, and the Ozone concept car certainly looks like a pretty interesting vehicle to be in! It runs on just two large wheels at each side, and is powered by hydrogen, making this as clean as it can be while transporting you to your destination. I wonder how you’re going to park this thing though, as it looks like one huge Sony Rolly instead. Huge glass doors are where you make your entry/exit - doesn’t look too safe at all IMHO.
