There’s nothing super special about this exclusive-to-Walmart Xbox 360 controller, other than the fact that it’s adorned with a ferociously awesome dragon, a beautiful lady, and an old-timey telephone, and it comes bundled with a terrifyingly hideous headset — but we bet your new Xbox Experience avatar will appreciate the effort you put into sprucing the place up before his / her arrival. It’s on sale now and can be yours for $49.74.

The Arduino-based, DIY GamePack is sort of like the Mignon Game Kit we saw in 2005, but it definitely looks much, much radder. For a mere $249.93, all the necessary parts — CPU, “Inputshield” customizable, vibrating controller / button component (say, for right or left-handed configurations), “TouchShield Stealth” OLED display unit, and “MeCap” lithium battery pack — can be yours. Once you’ve cobbled it together, of course, the real fun begins — it’s pretty much a blank slate with little more than code for a color-changing dot to start with, so if you want to play any “games” on that new “Game Boy” of yours, you’re going to have to write them yourself. See a video of the device in action after the break.

Hints of a 60GB Xbox Live Starter Pack popped up in Europe in August, but according to GameStop and a leaked Circuit City ad, the $99 upgrade should land in American stores sometime next week. Just as we’d heard, the bundle will include three months of Live Gold, a wired headset, and a 60GB hard drive — just the thing to meet that new 128MB New Xbox Experience storage requirement. Too bad Microsoft isn’t going to discount this bundle quite as heavily as that $30 20GB package for Arcade owners, but we won’t complain too loudly — hell, if MS would just cut the price on that ridiculous $149 120GB unit, we’d be all smiles.

Thanks to a special blessing from the folks in Redmond, we’ve had an opportunity to thoroughly give the rejiggered Xbox 360 Dash (AKA, the New Xbox Experience) a serious run through, and we’ve got the lowdown on the future of your gaming life. As you probably already know from the numerous posts we’ve done and generally available info (Microsoft has been pretty forthcoming with this stuff), the Xbox team has completely revamped the Dash experience, giving the system not only a visual overhaul, but trashing the underlying tech and rebuilding things from the ground up. The result is a beautiful, intuitive interface which loses almost nothing from previous versions while adding a considerable new feature set to the mix. Read on for our first impressions.

As we reported back in April, the space western Firefly is finally coming out on Blu-ray this week. We also have a quite a number of genre-themed movie bundles coming out … let’s check out what they are:

Theatrical releases:

Band of Brothers, the 2001 HBO mini-series on World War II, is another high-profile fan-favorite TV release debuting on Blu-ray. Hellboy II: The Golden Army, was a pleasant surprise — entertaining, visually engaging and humorous. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, despite being panned by critics and most fans alike, still managed to earn over $60 million dollars worldwide. The Superhero Blu-ray Collection, with a total of seven films, is a decent deal if you do not already own any of the movies in collection. Theatrical releases are below, everything else (including TV releases) are after the jump:

This day has been a long time coming, but Activision’s next iteration of the Guitar Hero cash cow franchise is officially available. Truth be told, the game (and requisite instruments) was sitting on a-many of store shelves yesterday, but there’s nothing like a formal announcement to really push you to take a few hours from work and rock out this evening. There’s a variety of bundles out there ranging from the game alone ($49.99 to $59.99), the game and a guitar ($89.99 to $99.99) and the full-on band kit ($179.99 to $189.99), so make sure you choose wisely when heading out to drop some dough.

Oh Nintendo, did you really have to go and crush the dreams of so many homebrew faithful? Seems a Wii System Update released last night blocks new installations (existing installs are unaffected) of anything fakesigned like the Homebrew Channel. Perhaps the increased corporate vigilance comes in direct response to the very real threat posed by the Wii Backup Loader to run pirated Wii games. Regardless, this isn’t the first time that homebrew developers have had to work around Nintendo’s meddling. We’ll let you know what they come up with — until then, however, you might want to hold off on the IOS51 update if you’re thinking of going homebrew anytime soon.

Hackers, like life, will find a way. Sony knows that all too well thanks to the PSP, but so far the PlayStation 3 has stood strong in the face of legions of nerds trying to find a way to exploit it. A potentially major breakthrough may have been made, though, as well-known PS3 hacker StreetskaterFU (we’ve no idea what he’s going for with that name — really) has managed to decrypt the beta client for Sony’s PlayStation Home service. Curious devs can now poke around in the files looking for a way to exploit the newish in-game XMB functionality, potentially allowing homebrew apps and game backups without hard drive swapping. There’s no guarantee it will lead anywhere in the end, but you don’t care either way, right? Our upstanding readership would never participate in such heinously illegal activities.

Konami is a publisher of games on every platform. However, it appears that their greatest success comes on PlayStation consoles. In 2007, sales were largely dominated by PlayStation platforms. The PS2 represented 39% of Konami’s overall sales, while the PlayStation brand accounted for 58%.

2008 looks no different, as PS3 now represents 38% of Konami’s overall sales (thanks, Metal Gear Solid 4!). The PlayStation brand accounts for a whopping 67% of sales for the Japanese publisher.

Without MGS4 in the company portfolio, the numbers may skew a bit differently. However, it’s important to note that Konami seems to be struggling in getting a key audience on non-Sony platforms. Xbox 360 is home to most of Konami’s multiplatform efforts, and that’s yielded quite an insignificant return. We’re surprised by the success they’ve found on PSP, especially in comparison to the DS figures. So long as PlayStation can offer these kinds of numbers, Konami may continue being one of Sony’s greatest partners.
