The Wii Fit might have some competition brewing, if Men’s Fitness magazine is a publication worthy of the public’s trust, that is. The details are vague, to say the very least but, here’s what we “know”: Dave Kushner, executive producer at EA Sports, told the magazine that the company is planning an ‘unnamed fitness game’ with a ‘new peripheral’ which will connect the Wiimote to the player’s body, enabling all sorts of newfangled measurements, movements, and exercises barely dreamed of before. Sounds totally awesome, right? Well, if and when it materializes, we’ll be sure to rush to the store, buy one, then sadly rue its unused, guilt-inducing existence every day thereafter.

The PSP has proven to be quite the popular system among hackers and modders of all sorts, but it looks like Sony has turned the tables a bit with its latest PSP-3000 model (otherwise known as the PSP Brite), which has so far put up a stiff resistance against folks’ attempts to put it to some decidedly unofficial uses. Among other things, the PSP-3000 has apparently completely shut shutting down the popular Pandora battery hack, and it’s even managed to stifle new attempts by heavyweight modders like Dark Alex to crack it open. One modder, known only as Royginald, even went so far as to swap the PSP-3000’s CPU out in favor of one from a PSP-2000, only to discover far too late that the 3000’s new interlaced video made the entire setup quite useless. Maybe that’s one of the “features” Sony was talking about?

There’s seamless, and then there’s Foo’s PSP mod. Easily one of the most remarkably clean gaming mods we’ve seen to date, this here hack involved an old socket originally intended for a cellphone, steady hands and an unwanted Super Nintendo controller (we’re simplifying things, but work with us here). In the end, the mod left a nearly-flush port on the rear of the handheld where a hacked SNES controller could be plugged in for input, and better still, the connector doubled as a PSP kickstand. The whole concept was conceived after someone with limited use of one hand contacted Foo for help; needless to say, this workaround now has that individual in business. Hop on past the break to see it in action.

We’ll be honest with you: we don’t read the GP32X board nearly as often as we’d like — but we did manage to cull from its archive this cold, hard fact: Pandora is now going to ship with 256MB of beautiful, delicious RAM, AND 512MB of flash memory — that’s double what we initially were told to expect, and Craigix confirmed that Ubuntu is now running 20 percent faster with the upgrade. This windfall comes at no additional cost to the patient, patient consumer. Our advice though? Next time there’s a seriously righteous spec bump happening, try not to couch it in a riddle.

[Thanks, Jared E]

Looks like the cause of the PAIN expansion pack delay has been resolved. If you looked carefully, you would’ve seen that there was a PSN Trophy involving a Street Fighter character. (Street Rider - Use any Street Fighter(R) character to travel 2 miles while grabbing a vehicle) Looks like licensing took longer than expected, and that feature has been removed from the upcoming Hollywood Studio expansion.

Travis from the PAIN blog explains that the expansion pack will be available in tomorrow’s PSN update: “Everything is going well and we will get our approval form Format at the end of the day. Unless something blows up (which is highly unlikely) we WILL ship on Thursday @ 15:00 GMT.” Considering this is PAIN, we wouldn’t be surprised to have something blow up.

Seriously, calm down a minute. Your world has not just gotten infinitely better, although hearing the words “PlayStation” and “open platform” in the same phrase may make you think otherwise. In a relatively quiet announcement made at Casual Connect in Kiev, Ukraine, Sony Europe’s George Bain proclaimed that developers would “no longer have to submit a game for content approval,” effectively making the PS2 “an open platform.” He pointed out examples from Russia and India, noting that they could now “create low-development cost titles and release them in their market.” In all honesty, we have our doubts that this decision will make any real waves in North America, though Bain did mention a “global approval system” to replace the separated processes currently serving Europe, Japan and America. Now, if SCEA comes out and says something similar about the PS3, then you’ll hear some real excitement in our voice.

Many of you have been asking us “where is Fat Princess, oh darn it?” Well, looks like it’s 2009. First unveiled at E3 this year, the downloadable title earned a lot of buzz (both positive and negative) for its cute, gory, cake-filled concept.

A press release from Epic Games China has officially “announced” the “opening” of Titan Studios, the developer of the upcoming game. There are a few things we’re confused by. First, why is Epic Games China opening a studio in Seattle? Last we checked, Seattle wasn’t a part of China (unless, that is, the takeover has begun …). Also, why is the studio being announced now? Maybe that’s why Fat Princess is taking so long to develop! The studio wasn’t actually official yet!

Titan Studios brings to it developers with experience at companies including Ubisoft, Epic Games, Scion Studios, Blizzard Entertainment and Lionhead Studios. Titan Studios is not only working on Fat Princess, but a number of other Unreal Engine 3 games, including a massively multiplayer online game.

There’s no doubt that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will have the price advantage this holiday season, and if you were hoping to see a bona fide price cut following Sony’s introduction of the $399.99 80GB PlayStation 3, you’ll probably be waiting ’til late 2009. Speaking at the Gamer 3.0 conference in London this week, Sony’s own Ray Maguire was quoted as saying that the pressure for a price drop from consumers was always there, but given that it “has a business to run” and shareholders to please, it probably won’t be decreasing the PS3’s price before the end of 2008. He also stated that “at the moment, there’s a market place for the PS3,” and that “the price of the console [won’t] be an issue at all.” In all honesty, he’s probably right — after all, this will be the first holiday season where Blu-ray isn’t competing with some other physical HD format, and c’mon, you know you’ll pay a premium to dabble in Life with PlayStation.
