VW Readying a New Microbus?

Now don’t everyone jump up at once. The iconic Volkswagen (VW) Microbus may be returning to a street near you. The standard issue hippie van was originally expected to return in 2005 (a 2001 concept is pictured above), but spiraling costs and the falling dollar caused the project to be canceled.

Now, some at the German manufacturer are saying the Microbus could be resurrected yet again. Rumors are circulating that the VW classic could be built right here in America in the company’s Chattanooga, Tennessee facility. The plant is equipped to assemble an as yet unnamed mid-sized sedan that, according to an unnamed “senior official” at VW, could form the basis of the updated Microbus.

Of course, the company is publicly playing coy, saying only that the Chattanooga plant could potentially manufacture a second vehicle line. [From: Autoblog]
