Aigo Ships P8860 MID

Aigo has begun to ship its Atom-powered P8860 MID for $699, making it available for the first time via official channels although the P8860 has been around on eBay for some time already. Word has it that Aigo has already inked a deal with both Intel and Microsoft, which means Windows XP drivers will be made available from the first of October onwards - an early Christmas present for people who have incomplete, touch screen-less XP installs.

Carl Zeiss powerdomeVELVET Projector - Brighter Than A Thousand Suns

Don’t go around with that smug look on your face if your TV has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio - Carl Zeiss’ powerdomeVELVET Planetarium Projector clearly outshines your TV thanks to its phenomenal 2,500,000:1 contrast ratio. The main reason behind that is, this device is meant to be used in planetariums and not your living room. Inside you will find Texas Instruments’ BrilliantColor DLP technology that helps you achieve a perfect black backdrop. No idea on how much it costs, but it will arrive next year at a probably astronomical (pun intended) sum.

Solar Motorcycle Is Large

Solar-powered cars, yes. Solar-powered bikes? I don’t think that’s such a good idea, since the entire bike would be too large for many people to wield. Just check out this monster of a bike - the Prometheus solar-powered motorcycle that has four huge solar panels to soak up the sun’s energy, translating it into electricity to propel yourself forward. Lithium-ion phosphate batteries with a 4.6kWh capacity are connected to a 10 HP Perm PMG 132 motor, making it capable of hitting a top speed of 70 mph within a 50 mile range. Folks who are interested won’t be able to pick up this bike since it is not for sale, but there is an interest for such a bike, although I would be inclined to say that something smaller is more desirable.

Nissan Robots Can Avoid Accidents

Nissan has taken a leaf out of nature’s book with their new Biometric Car Robot Drive, featuring 300-degree vision via compound eyes and instantaneous reflexes just like bees. This allows the robot to navigate around obstacles, and will eventually translate this technology into a new generation of crash-avoidance systems in its cars, helping make roads a much safer place. The technology won’t make it into next year’s Nissan models, that’s for sure, but it is encouraging to see efforts being stepped up to reduce the number of fatalities on the road due to human error and carelessness.

Fastest Vaio UX490 In The World?

Could this be it? The fastest Vaio UX490 in the world? Just take a look at the figures and see for yourself. The UX490 has not been overclocked, although its Intel Core 2 Solo 1.2GHz processor has been replaced by the Core 2 Duo U7600 ULV 1.2GHz processor instead, making the unit hit a whopping 45,999 in Crystal Mark. Another reason for the high points scored in benchmark tests is the inclusion of a 32GB SSD compared to units using hard drives. Do you happen to have a UMPC that’s faster?

Toshiba Rolls Out 256GB SSDs

Toshiba has plans to enhance its SSD line with a new 256GB model that targets both netbooks as well as UMPCs. Hmm, with Microsoft restricting netbooks running Windows XP to a 160GB hard drive cap, does this limitation apply to SSDs as well? Something worth pondering over. Anyhows, I digress. The new Toshiba 256GB SSD will feature a maximum read and write speed of 120MB/s and 70MB/s respectively, thanks to a SATA interface. No idea if this is able to survive a 3-story fall though.
