Google’s latest move could give everyday users more of an understanding of how it works and modifies their results. It already offers results based on information such as location, previous searches and web history, and now it is to inform users when their results have been modified in this way.

In the next few days, users will start to see notifications popping up to notify them their results have been customised.

The engine will use IP addresses to customise results, although users can sign in to change location. Searchers who are signed in will also be offered results which use previous searches as context.

I like this idea, it will help hone results and ensure users receive more targeted offerings. Could that include paid ads? Google does not say so, but it seems highly likely the move will increase the relevancy of such adverts.

As someone working in the online marketing sector, this is great. In fact, as a consumer, this makes me quite happy – I do not mind viewing adverts which are relevant to my requirements.

However, Google is obviously wary of people’s fear of their details being used this way. It states: “One important note about Web History: it belongs to you and you have complete control over it. You can remove specific items or pause the service at any time.”

I do not think there is much scope for users to get upset- Google is making every effort to keep them informed and they can turn it off. It seems to me this is an important development in search.

Before long, people will expect search engines to “learn” about them and their requirements. It is an important part of developing the way we navigate the web.

Mark ConsuelosYou can always count on Ugly Betty to feature tons of guest stars each season. There are the celebrity cameos, the hot love interests, and the over-the-top divas. Yet another guest star was recently lined up for the show’s third season, and while his love interest status is unconfirmed, he definitely belongs in the “hot” category.

Former All My Children star Mark Consuelos is taking on another soapy role in a guest spot on the telenovela-inspired Ugly Betty. Although the powers-that-be haven’t revealed any major details about his role, TV Guide did discover a few bits of info.

If you’re going to return to the big screen after a long break and a big scandal, it probably helps to have the biggest co-star you can grab. It looks like Mel Gibson has done exactly that with his upcoming Edge of Darkness, because according to Variety, Robert De Niro is in talks to join the cast.

Edge is a big-screen remake of the 1985 BBC miniseries, and it centers on Thomas Craven, a Boston detective, whose 24-year-old daughter is murdered on the front steps of their home. Assuming he was the target, Craven begins investigating the murder, only to discover a startling conspiracy that reaches into high levels of government. Robert De Niro will play an operative sent to clean up the evidence, which probably means he’ll engage in fisticuffs with Gibson at some point. The movie is set to begin filming this month in Massachusetts, and has a SAG waiver to continue if a strike occurs.

As I’ve stated before, I’m really looking forward to seeing Gibson acting again, and I love the idea of him pairing up with De Niro. It’s a casting combination that I’m surprised hasn’t happened before. I just hope the film, and its performances, can be judged on its own merit and not condemned because of Gibson’s past behavior. And with that, I ask you to try and remain civil in the comments!

At last, there’s a delightful cast addition to The Picture of Dorian Gray. In all the excitement of summer, this film undoubtedly dropped off your radar. But back in May, Ben Barnes (otherwise known as Prince Caspian) was cast as the eternally beautiful lead. (I know some of you haven’t forgotten, I get comments praising Barnes about once a week. He’s got quite a following!)

Now, the god of lushly wet shirts (otherwise known as Colin Firth ) has joined the cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’ll be playing the witty Lord Henry Wotton, the aristocrat who corrupts young Gray with his hedonistic pursuits and outlook. And yes, there’s a good dash of homoeroticism inherent in their relationship as well. It has the potential to be deliciously dark and twisted onscreen.

Firth is, obviously, no stranger to costume pieces or Oscar Wilde. He co-starred in the delightful The Importance of Being Earnest, which was also directed by Wilde aficionado Oliver Parker. As they’re selling this as a “visceral, dark horror story,” I’m really excited to see Firth in it. He seems to be the go-to guy for American romantic comedies lately, and it will be fun to see him be villainous again. Filming begins this week, and I bet there will be photos of both men in cravats and poet shirts in London’s Metro paper by the end of August.

Here’s a clip of how yesterday’s earthquake made everyone on the Judge Judy set sound like scared baby seals.

Mena Suvari

Mena Suvari is set to go topless in an erotic sex scene for her latest movie.

The 29-year-old actress - who was nominated for a BAFTA award for her role in 1999 movie “American Beauty” - is said to have had “no problems” with the nudity in gritty crime thriller “Stuck.”

An insider said: “She just took her clothes off and got on with it!”

In the movie, Mena plays Brandi, a retirement home nurse who accidentally hits a homeless man while drink driving.

She continues driving home even though the man, who was not killed by the accident, is still lying across her windscreen.

Earlier this month, Mena, 29, announced her engagement to music producer Simone Sestito - who met the actress last year at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Despite accepting the proposal, Mena - who was previously married to Robert Brinkman, a 46-year-old cinematographer - is said to be keen to wait before tying the knot again.

A source close to the actress revealed: “They’re taking their time planning the wedding. They are in no rush.”

Simone is the founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of concert promotion company ISSIMO.

Touch Sight For The Visually Impaired

Touch Sight is an interesting camera, mainly because it’s designed for visually impaired people. Since a conventional camera won’t do the trick, as a still picture isn’t good enough, the Touch Sight records sounds and displays imagery via 3D embossing, this will allow the user to remember the moment via two other senses, namely hearing and touch. Instead of using a LCD, Touch Sight uses a flexible Braille display sheet, which will display a 3D image by embossing the surface, which will allow the user to touch the image, and when coupled with the recorded sound becomes a touchable “photo” which can also be uploaded to share with other people.

Zeemote JS1 Controller Spotted

Sony Ericsson has decided to bundle the Zeemote JS1 mobile joystick with each purchase of the new W760 cell phone - at least in the Netherlands. Folks living outside of that country won’t be able to take advantage of such an offer, so they’ll need to find another way to get their portable gaming fix (might I suggest the DS or PSP?). Of course, if it helps, the Sony Ericsson W760 is one handset that boasts tilt gaming, but with the addition of the Zeemote JS1, it makes games all the more enjoyable. No idea on how much this bundle costs nor whether the offer will be extended to other countries.

Not really news per se, but the Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer shown at the DKS3713 party in Tokyo ended with the words “PlayStation 3 only worldwide.” So it’s nice to know for certain that we have at least one part of the FFXIII series to our greedy little selves. Not to mention Agito coming to PSP. Versus XIII’s release date is still very much up in the air, while XIII will be out in Japan next year sometime and a demo will be made available with Advent Children: Complete in March 2009.

The FFXIII series is finally starting to look like a collection of real games, as opposed to concept work, with actual gameplay being shown off at the event. If any sneaky attendees managed to video any of the footage shown, hopefully we’ll be able to see it with our own eyes soon.
