EA released their incredibly dry Q1 financial report for investors last night. Nestled amongst the self-congratulations and expectations for the future lie some interesting numbers regarding console-specific income. Put bluntly, the PS3 is EA’s largest source of income right now, and has been since the beginning of 2008. Not bad for a console Riccitiello regrets backing.
For those of you who can’t get enough of numbers, here’s a breakdown how much, in millions, each console brought to the EA table at the end of Q1 2008 (April - June) . Bracketed numbers show the amount of income generated during the same period last year, followed by the percentage increase. For more details, including plenty of fun tabulated data, check out the report for yourself.
PS3: 139mln (13mln, 969%) 360: 81mln (47mln, 72%) PS2: 79mln (61mln, 30%) Wii: 57mln (29mln, 97%)

Sigh. Remember Patrick Moberg, that Vimeo employee from Brooklyn who saw the “girl of his dreams” (yeah, he really said it) on the subway and waged an online campaign to find her. www.nygirlofmydreams was a sort of grand-scale “missed connections,” wherein Pat drew a nice picture of the girl and put out an appeal to his New York neighbors to help him find her.
People love that sort of stuff, it’s like ‘Desperately Seeking Susan‘ for the Internet era. And so New Yorkers helped Patrick hurtle along towards a doomed romance, locating the mystery girl within 48 hours.
Dreamgirl was actually one Camille Hayton, a Blackbook intern from Australia. She dated Moberg for two months in the wake of great media fanfare, and then, it was over.
In a recent interview, Hayton told the The Sunday Telegraph about the breakup and about her cameos in ‘As the World Turns‘ and the ‘Sex and the City‘ movie.
“…We dated for a while but now we’re just friends,” said Hayton, “It’s really nice that people embraced the story. It is part of my life now.” Moberg, however, refused to comment, telling Reuters via e-mail “We’ve decided not to do any more press.” Hmmm…miscommunication, kiddos? [Source: Reuters]

Here at SEOptimise, we know it can be hard to persuade some bosses you need online marketing. Sometimes they do not use the internet, or simply do not want to allocate the cash – perhaps because they do not believe in the returns which are possible with a decent search engine optimisation campaign. To save you time, we have prepared the below letter. Simply edit and print!
Dear [insert boss’s name here],
I hope you are well. It was lovely seeing you and your [wife/husband/new wife/new husband/children/dog] at the recent company [picnic/drinks night/your boss is a tight-fisted git, please delete the entire sentence].
It has come to my attention that, far from being a passing craze, the internet has become a rather important tool for businesses. While I appreciate you once said the web is a [fad/wasteful pit of porn and vice/thing spiders live in], I was wondering if we could please have an online marketing budget.
There are a number of reasons for my request. One is that more people than ever are using the internet, as demonstrated by the recent research published by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising. The average adult spends 1.07 hours a day on the internet. [NB For some bosses, you may have to print out this and the following pieces of evidence out. Put them in a nice shiny clear-fronted folders, that always adds gravitas]
Furthermore, the internet is a great place to market to people. A recent study issued by the Internet Advertising Bureau found the internet drives 40 per cent of brand engagement, more than the press and television.
Importantly, when the consumers are online, they are using search engines to navigate the web. Search engines such as Google and Yahoo! (I know that Yahoo! advert with the big claw print confused you, but it really is a place on the internet). Google is the most commonly-used portal, achieving 87 per cent of the searches in the UK in May, according to Hitwise. ComScore analysis suggested Google properties accounted for 74.2 per cent of all searches. Whichever is right, that is a lot of people using Google a lot.
To conclude, the internet is not the marketing tool of tomorrow, it is the tool of the moment, the tool our competitors are using and a tool we need to exploit.
Yours sincerely,

Living on the 20th floor of an apartment building, with absolutely no access to anything resembling a garden, my heart burns with jealousy over all the gorgeous outdoor space that so many members of the Slashfood Flickr pool have. I regularly see fabulous grilling set-ups and verdant garden patches that never fail to send me into fits of envy (someday, I took shall have outdoor space!).
This perfect little tomato comes from Joy, who grew it in her yard. So lovely! Thanks Joy, for adding your tasty pic to the pool!

Here’s what’s happening in the world of movie news today:
- UPDATE: Columbia Pictures has announced that The White Stripes’ Jack White will team with Alicia Keys on the Quantum of Solace theme song. Said song will be called “Another Way to Die,” and it will be the first duet in Bond soundtrack history.
- UPDATE: Universal lands Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards — they will partner with The Weinstein Co. on the WWII flick. The writer-director has already met with Brad Pitt about playing a role, and production is scheduled to start this fall. (Variety)
- UPDATE: MTV has confirmed through IDW Publishing that “The Fallen” in the Transformers 2 title does indeed refer to the main villain in the film.
- Holy Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince trailer! It debuts online today! Prior to its arrival, USA Today has posted a photo (see above) of the young Tom Riddle (aka young Voldemort). Kid looks a tad creepy … what do you think? We’ll update this post as soon as the trailer arrives online.
- Tim Burton’s making an Alice in Wonderland movie, so now we have to figure out which role Johnny Depp will play. In our minds, there’s only one — and Celeb Edge says Depp has been pegged to star as the Mad Hatter. Let me guess: Depp’s performance will come with a side order of freaky and creepy?
- Jennifer Lopez will star in the romantic comedy The Governess, where she’ll play a thief who poses as the nanny of three unruly children in order to rob a bank. The romance comes into play when she begins to fall for the widowed father of the three kids. What to do: Rob a bank for millions … or get involved with a dude who has three annoying kids? Oh, the tough decisions these characters must face … (Variety)

IGN has thrown up the brand spanking new Friday the 13th poster (see to the right; click to enlarge). You can also read all about that particular Comic Con panel over here. If we’re lucky, this will be the one where Jason finally shares his feelings through talking and not physical harm …
More after the jump …

Tokyoflash has yet another watch to adorn your hand with a piece of style - the Zero-G. This timepiece comes in a sleek and slender profile, featuring a mirrored LCD face that points to the hour just like how any other analog watches do. In addition, it comes with a segmented curve around the edges to mark the minutes. It will take slightly more practice to tell the time, but at least this is one of the easiest Tokyoflash offerings to decipher to date. The Zero-G will come in black or silver colors and tips the scales at a mere 60 grams. It will retail for approximately $98 if you plan to import one.

Looks like we’re not the only ones that thought LittleBigPlanet was the best PS3 exclusive at E3 this year. In fact, many other outlets are proclaiming it the Game of the Show. 1UP declared Media Molecule’s upcoming platformer “Game of the Show,” while Resistance 2 earned “Best Shooter” and inFAMOUS earned “best trailer.” “Best New Game”? MAG.
G4 gave its award for Best PS3 Game to inFAMOUS … while it gave away top accolades to LittleBigPlanet as the best game of E3. However, Gametrailers chose to disagree with the rest of the bunch though, calling Resident Evil 5 their Best of E3.
If it wasn’t apparant already, these repeated nods from critics should make one thing very clear: LBP is awesome — we can’t wait for all of you to get your hands on it too!

There it is, right on cue Microsoft’s Surface has gone spherical over at Microsoft Research. Rumored since March, the prototype relies upon an infrared system to detect hands, fingers, and objects as well as an internal (not external like Surface) projection system developed by Global Imagination (and customized by Microsoft) to deliver its multi-touch UI.
At the moment, Microsoft is demonstrating photo manipulation, a spinning globe, 360-degree video, and a simple Pong-like game, the latter giving us a taste of future gaming possibilities. Sphere is expected to make its first public appearance Tuesday at Microsoft’s Faculty Summit in Redmond. Ultimately, it will appear in public spaces like lobbies as part of a larger ecosystem of Surface gear. The prototype UI looks a bit jumpy compared to its tabletop cousin — hit the read link to see the video for yourself. [Source: seattlepi]
