Rogers Wireless Purchase $150 Million of iPhones

The good people at Rogers Wireless has decided to take their chances with Apple’s offer of $150 million worth of iPhones, which makes it sound as though you won’t find an iPhone 3G shortage in the Great White North anytime soon. While Rogers Wireless won’t be making as much profit as they’d like to each time they sell an iPhone 3G, it is hoped that the magical handset will snag a higher average revenue per user to counter the initial subsidy investment. Just how many iPhone 3Gs does $150 million translate to? Taking an average non-subsidzed price of $450 per handset into consideration, that would amount to a mountain of 333,000 iPhone 3Gs.

Palringo from App Store

Palringo is surely one of the more useful applications to purchase from the App Store if you’re a heavy IM user, as it supports Google Talk, Jabber, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, iChat and Gadu-Gadu (for Poles) in a single program. Being the first off the blocks to do so, you can also use Palringo to send photos from your camera or photo albums to virtually anyone on your universal buddy list, and the receiving end can then click on the inline image to view the full (albeit compressed) photo on Palringo’s servers. How are you taking advantage of your unlimited data account on the new iPhone 3G?

Lite-On DVD Writers Faster, Better

As with any new hardware release, it makes sense for Lite-On’s new DVD writers to come with a speedy 22x speed as well as SmartErase. As you can tell from the latter’s name, this is a new data erasing feature that works with DVD+/-R (DL) and CD-R discs, overwriting existing data with random and meaningless characters so that nobody else will be able to read the disc regardless of the drive they use, enabling you to effectively keep what you want to be private that way forever. The SmartErase function has been included inside Nero 7 Essentials and will come bundled with each purchase. There is no word on pricing, although this new DVD writer will hit Europe sometime in October.

FAK3 Home Design Project

FAK3 is pronounced “FAKE” under geek speak, and this home design project sees a central, multifunctional area that brings together a range of activities including dining, study, and entertainment, helping you save space at the same time. Of course, trying to read a book on one side with your partner watching the TV at full blast on the other side isn’t going to help much, but at least you don’t have to worry about living in a cramped studio apartment now, citing the sorry lack of space, do you? The FAK3 elliptical cabinet can rotate 360 degrees, and that is made possible by a single push of a button. Of course, it will take quite some time before this idea becomes viable for most homes, so it looks as though this will remain in the concept realm for quite some time to come.

Celleden Bluetooth Anywhere Speakerphone

It makes perfect sense to get a handsfree kit for your cell phone if you happen to do plenty of driving, as it will go a long way in helping you drive safe while saving a whole lot of cash in terms of avoiding tickets from the cops. The Celleden Bluetooth Anywhere Speakerphone is one such device that makes for the perfect in-car companion, although you would have to tote around a Bluetooth-enabled phone in the first place (most handsets do these days, just check with the resident nerd in your circle to confirm). This device comes with a digital signal processor and a couple of microphones for superior audio quality. The talktime is rated at 3 hours, while standby time, er, stands at 250 hours. The Celleden Bluetooth Anywhere Speakerphone will retail for £50 a pop.

Nokia N85 Specs Leaked Officially

Ok, the phrase “official leak” doesn’t sound quite right, but that’s the case with the Nokia. While it isn’t available on an official basis yet, Nokia has already posted specifications of this smartphone on their own website. This mid-range N Series cell phone will come with GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity, ensuring you remain hooked to the Internet no matter where you are. There is no word on GPS navigation, but that would be nice to see in the final product. It will also support a wide range of all the popular video formats, making this one multimedia-centric device.

Asus USB-N11 Wireless N USB Adapter

Asus has a brand new wireless N USB adapter in the form of the aptly named USB-N11. This device comes with a button that when pused, it will automagically create a protected wireless environment without having to earn a rocket science degree in the first place. The USB-N11 is fully certified with the 802.11n wireless standard, and claims to offer a data transfer rate of up to 5 times faster throughput @ 90Mbps compared to 802.11g standards - that’s all in theory, of course, and the proof is in the pudding so I’ll take this figure with a pinch of salt at this point in time. It is also pocketable, measuring a mere 84mm x 21mm x 11mm. No idea on how much it will cost though, but good thing it wasn’t named under the super-diluted Eee banner.

They say that nothing is free in this world, and that saying holds true at least for iPhoneinfused - a company that will unlock your iPhone 2.0 software, providing you with freedom from exclusive wireless providers’ expensive roaming charges, all for the relatively low price of $39.95. Unfortunately, they have yet to show the method to confirm it is not a complete scam, so it does leave some questions including whether they’re riding on the iPhone Dev Team’s solution. Try at your own risk. For iPhone/iPod touch owners, at what cost are you willing to go for a jailbreak and unlock?

Modified Pikachus Make Plenty of Noise

I know that Pikachus are extremely cute, and good thing Game Freaks did not make them impossible to catch in Pokemon. Kaseo has an affinity for this yellow pocket monster, constructing an entire orchestra of musical instruments that consists of modified Pikachu toys. That’s like, totally whacked out, dude. Insane yet cool at the same time - this person’s got some rare talent here. The Pikachus themselves surely look out of whack, and would send even Ash packing.

Lenovo Unveils 3000 G Series Notebook

Lenovo works weird sometimes, introducing the 3000 G Series notebook in Malaysia today instead of their normal launch countries. This 14″ notebook will target those who live on a tight budget, offering a 1.86GHz Pentium dual-core processor, 2GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive and a DVD burner. Sounds pretty utilitarian - costs are further reduced as it comes pre-loaded with MS-DOS, giving you the choice to install Linux, Windows or another operating system of your choice. It will retail for roughly $613, making it fall under the high-end netbook category.
