Well here’s an interesting one. French iPhone blog iPhon.fr got these pics from an anonymous and unverified source, and while there’s no way of telling if the shots are legit, they certainly have a truthy ring to them. They follow what we know so far about the shape, size and color of the upcoming 3G iPhone, and while there’s always the possibility of knockoff, a Photoshop job, or some other evil plot to mislead us, we’re certainly not going to discount these shots entirely in the runup to iPhone’s second coming. The USB Screwless 3.5″ HDD Enclosure (USB + eSATA) is something everyone should own I believe - after all, carrying around another few hundred GB of storage space is always a good thing as you never know just what you might want to store there and then. Featuring a quick release function, it takes a mere 10 seconds to exchange a 3.5″ hard drive with another without any screwing involved. It comes with a powerful cooling fan that helps prevent overheating, although I would recommend you clean it out once in a while since dust is one of a hard drive’s greatest enemies. It will retail for $59 from Brando, but don’t expect free shipping with this as that will set you back by another $25.

With each subsequent release of the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ (GTA) series there is always a stir of controversy, with various concerned groups trying to ban the games. The recently released ‘GTA IV’ is no different, and the latest group to take issue with the game is Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The group takes issue with the driving aspects of the game — specifically, the parts of driving that take place after main character Nico has had something to drink.
That’s right, they don’t care about shooting people, stealing cars, running down police officers, soliciting prostitutes, or any of the other fanciful and felonious things you can do in the game. They’re worried about the drunk driving, and are calling on Take-Two, the game’s publisher, to stop sales of the game. For its part, Rockstar, the game’s developer, said this:
“For the same reason that you can’t judge an entire film or television program by a single scene, you can’t judge ‘Grand Theft Auto IV’ by a small aspect of the game.”
We would tend to agree, and think that the MADD folks would have a lot more to be worried about if they actually played the game. We did, and we think it’s fab — but it’s definitely not for young, impressionable types. [Source: AOL News/AP]

JVC just rolled out its 1.75″ 8K4K D-ILA (Direct-Drive Image Light Amplifier) which is capable of outputting 17x full, 1080p high definition from a projector. That, my friends, is roughly the equivalent of a 35-megapixel image at a whopping 8,192 x 4,320 resolution. Size isn’t all that matters, but pixel density as well as JVC managed to successfully increase the ratio of area per pixel by 50% over its predecessor’s 4,096 x 2,400 LCD panel that was developed in June last year. I guess if JVC wants to lay claim to the title of World’s first real Super Hi-Vision definition device, they have every right to do so. The commercial release will be sometime in January next year, hopefully it won’t be too expensive by then.

The Inquirer reports that British youths are signing online to sites such as Bebo and MSN and posing as middle aged pedophiles to scare classmates. Investigators thought that the reports of children being harassed were of the standard dirty-old-sexual-predator variety, but in nine separate cases, they found that the supposed pedophiles were actually classmates of the children attempting to scare them or settle rivalries.
The development is disturbing, but it does show a level of awareness and cleverness that we often assume children are incapable of. [Source: The Inquirer, Vva: Boing Boing]

We recently got a chance to briefly sit down with Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz, who definitely ranks among the geekier and more sincere CEOs we’ve had the privilege to meet. We discussed the long-missing JavaFX Mobile platform Sun promised a while back, as well as Java on the iPhone, and doing battle with Microsoft as an open source software vendor. Check it out over on Engadget Mobile!

Word has it that RIM is working on a clamshell BlackBerry phone, and has been christened Kickstart - perhaps this is an omen of things to come where Apple’s iPhone supremacy is concerned? This flipping phone is said to tout a Suretype keyboard (bound to keep those business suits happy), a pearlish trackball, a tiny external LCD display that shows the most relevant information on-the-fly, an internal LCD screen and a camera. Other than that, no further specifications have been given but it will probably give the iPhone a run for its money where push email on a handset is concerned.

While we’re sure there’s at least a few folks that’ll be pleased to hear that Sony Ericsson’s eagerly-anticipated XPERIA X1 will launch with Handango’s InHand service on the device, we’re guessing there’s a tad more people that’ll be interested in the other little detail revealed in the company’s recent newsletter: that the X1 will apparently be launching in mid-September. Of course, we’ll still have to wait to hear from Sony Ericsson to know for sure, especially given some of the launch date confusion in the past, but this latest word is at least in line with the company’s most recent statement that the X1 launching in the second half of 2008, so it might not be such a crazy idea to start counting down the days.

Apparently, not only is CompUSA rising from the dead like a horrific, zombified corpse, but now its guts are getting bought up and replaced by another retail behemoth. According to reports, Best Buy has just paid $13.5 million for 17 CompUSA store leases, ranging in time from three to 14 years and totaling 453,000 square feet. If the nightmare of CompUSA wasn’t enough to haunt you in your sleep, the news that its now-defunct locations will be replaced with essentially more of the same should shake you to your very core. We imagine the Best Buy victory rap will be making the rounds again, you can jog your memory after the break. [Source: Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal]
