For those that witnessed the Nationals topple the Braves on Opening Day (at least on US soil), you got a glimpse of just how nice the all new Nationals Park really is. Now, Sanjay Talwani has taken an in-depth look at the stadium, and he found that copious quantities of HD equipment abounds.

For starters, you’ll find four 52-inch Sony LCD monitors along with a number of Luma LCDs within the control room, not to mention the 1,552 x 720 Mitsubishi scoreboard screen and the Sony MVS-8000G switcher. As for cameras, there are a pair of HDC-1400s alongside two wireless XDCAMs, but those pale in comparison to the four remote-controlled BRC-H700s around the top of the venue.

‘Tis a shame the club’s regional carrier, MASN, isn’t diving in head first to carry all of its unclaimed matchups in HD, huh? For more details on the technology-crammed park, check out the read link below. [Source: TVTechnology]

It’s time to pull out your pocketbooks because the charity auction you’ve been waiting for is going down right now. Up for grabs: the absurdly rare, one of a kind, hand-made PS3 Laptop, built by Ben Heckendorn for Engadget. 100% of the proceeds of this auction will go to National Cancer Coalition, most or all of which should be tax-deductible by the winner. And to sweeten the deal that much more, we’ll even pay shipping, and have Ben Heck himself autograph the thing (if you want). The rules are below, read them carefully.

  • Real bids only people, this is for charity!
  • Let us repeat that: only leave a bid if you’re prepared to pony up that amount of money. Especially because we might come a knocking if for some reason we can’t get in touch with the top bidder.
  • Auction is over Friday, April 25th. We’ll contact the winner by email.
  • Payment will go directly to National Cancer Coalition, and will be expected to be made within one day of the auction’s close. We will confirm with the charity that the payment has been made.
  • A US winner will get free FedEx air shipping.
  • We will also ship internationally, but auction winner will likely have to pay customs.
  • Product is sold as-is, with no warranty by Ben Heck, Engadget, and certainly not by Sony.

Just in case you need a refresher, here are pics and video of what you’re bidding on. Good luck — and for those that don’t win, please don’t let that stop you from donating to the NCC or another charity of your choice!

Update: We’re postponing the auction. A few people can’t be mature enough to bid properly on something for charity; others believe we should be posting the auction to eBay (despite the fact that the last time we did a charity eBay auction we got scammed). We’ll get back to you, thanks.

By popular request we posted it to eBay. If we get fake bids again, though, we’re likely not to do anything like this again in the future — so be good.

Bid!

Even though this week’s Democratic debate was unfortunately-SD on ABC, we can expect more reasons to pay attention to the potential candidates in the days to come. CNN’s Election Express has already deployed an HD news truck to cover the campaign trail, but CBS is close behind.

The Eye plans to hit the conventions in HD, but it will take a while to move the newscast beyond upconverted standard definition video. NBC and ABC will also have the conventions in HD, but while NBC says its field equipment is HD ready, ABC doesn’t plan to move beyond 4×3 newsgathering until the end of the year. Check out the rest of the details on TV Technology, we can’t tell you who to vote for, but we wouldn’t make a decision based on anything said in 480i. [Source: TV Technology]

We know, there’s only so much you can do to a foam donut to make it, well, more than a foam donut, but Brando’s trying its best to one-up the competition by adding in a stand. With Mario Kart Wii launching in under a fortnight (in the US, at least), the Wii Multi-Axis Racing System is vying for those hard-earned dollars by giving racers the ability to grip something stuck to an immobile surface rather than just flailing around with some sort of lightweight Wiimote-engulfing circle. And at just $18, it even gives the first-party Wii Wheel some serious competition. Okay, so maybe “serious” is an overstatement.

Cricket Ball Knows How Fast It Is Going

Somehow sports that feature projectiles in a game (badminton, soccer, cricket, squash, tennis) have given birth to obsession such as the “fastest serve in the world”. In cricket, the fastest a ball was delivered is approximately 100mph, but those are the domain of professionals. What if you’re a budding cricket fan who adores the sport and want to know just how fast you will be able to bowl that cricket ball? Well, instead of getting a friend to stand at your side and using radar guns to capture the necessary statistics, why not use this Speedsensor cricket ball? For AUD$55 a pop, you get the official size, shape and weight of a standard cricketball, complete with a small LCD readout on one face. The only drawback is the need to program just how far the object is away before you bowl it…too much math…brain…exploding!

Pioneer AVIC-F500BT Almost Here

The Pioneer AVIC-F500BT is almost here now after receiving approval from the FCC, offering one of the larger screens where GPS naviation systems are concerned at 5.8″. It provides door-to-door driving directions and is able to connect to virtually anything in your vehicle, pairing up with your handset thanks to Bluetooth while boasting support for an optional TMC antenna. Heck, the ND-BC2 add-on also allows you to connect it to a rear view camera for those who question their own reverse parking skills. Patience is a virtue, friends, so don’t go blow that wad of cash you have at the moment on something frivolous as you wait for the Pioneer AVIC-F500BT to hit the streets.

If you’ve exhausted all of your resources and still can’t seem to whip up your very own Wii Laptop, Chinavasion’s out to make sure you have the second (albeit a distant one) best alternative. Granted, the CVSN-901 isn’t the first of its breed, but it does provide a marginally less unsightly design. As for specs, you’ll find a 7-inch 480 x 234 resolution display, built-in stereo speakers, auxiliary stereo AV connection, adjustments for contrast / brightness / etc. and a fan grill hole thrown in just to ensure that “your Wii won’t overheat.” For what it’s worth, it seems the requisite IR emitters are sitting just above the speakers (though it’s not spelled out on the product page), and at least the unit itself will only set you back a Benjamin and change (or way less if you order enough for your entire community).

Lifetime TV HD Always a favorite around the offices of Engadget HD, Lifetime Movie Network HD has a new best-friend-forever in the form of Lifetime Television HD, which has now launched. The sister (heh) channel has already lined up deals with U-Verse TV and FiOS TV. All kidding aside, the new channel has some serious market research to back it up, with almost half of women in the age range of 18 - 54 wanting to add either Lifetime or Lifetime Movie offerings to their HD menu.

Even if the programming isn’t your cup o’ tea, take it as an encouraging sign that HD is mainstream enough to break out of the boys-only club. And let’s face it — men, women and children alike — are going to watch whatever content they want to, so we welcome the addition of HD-choice to the table. [Source: HDTV Magazine]
