Blurb GroupBook

[Web 2.0] Blurb, is a cool online creative book publishing service that lets you create your own book and sell it. Today, Blurb launched Blurb GroupBook, a FaceBook application that allows users to create real books collectively.

How it works (see pictures in the full article)

  • Install Blurb GroupBook from the Facebook Applications Directory
  • Create a GroupBook project
  • Invite friends to contribute photos to the book. Once they accept the invitation they can upload and view photos, and make comments
  • As the book producer, you review the photos and select the ones you like
  • When ready, import the photos and create the book with Blurb BookSmart (easy download from the website)

Launched last year, Blurb has released today an updated beta version of BookSmart (1.9.4) and has recently been nominated for a 2008 Webby Award in the Services category.

Kingston BlackBox Secure Flash Drive

Kingston has a new uber-secure flash drive that also happen to cost big bucks: $424 for 8GB. In fact, this high price is probably driven in part by a federal requirement that some sensitive data has to be stored on a device that has received the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification. And the last time I looked, there was not a whole lot of 8GB flash drives in that category… Of course, the cost of the encryption hardware might be important too, but a chip of that size can’t cost a whole lot to make…

Our friends from akihabaranews have an exclusive hands-on video of the Sharp Sharp Willcom D4 WSO16SH. It ha been shot during a press conference and it shows that the Willcam D4 is more a PDA like a phone, as expected with the earlier specs. It does show Vista running somewhat normally, although I doubt that the experience is “ideal”, given how little memory the D4 WSO16SH has. However, it is still very nice to see what’s possible with Intel’s ATOM processor. It’s impressive.

Samsung i900 Tactile-Only Phone

Ok, one last Samsung phone for the next few hours… The i900 is another attempt to create a touch-phone that runs Windows Mobile 6.1. We know that there is a 5 Megapixel camera, but from what we can see there is no sliding keyboard similar to the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. I’m curious to see what the user interface look like.

Highlights

  • 5 Megapixel Digital Camera
  • GSM/3G
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
  • USB 2.0
  • 112×56x13mm

Remember that Japanese couple who sued Apple and Sony over one of those famous burning batteries? Well, it looks like the companies have decided to settle, and will pay the fire-damaged pair a total of ¥1.3 million (or around $13,000). Of course, this is a bit less than the absurdly low $16,700 the two were asking, but percentage-wise they didn’t make out too badly.

During the trial, Apple Japan apparently accepted responsibility for the incident but couldn’t justify settling out of court due to a request for “excessive compensation,” while Sony maintained its distance by suggesting a link between the battery and burns wasn’t clear. We’re sure the guy who made the trip to the hospital thinks otherwise.

Samsung B300 Clamshell Handset

Samsung’s B300 cell phone features both internal and external screens, with all the most basic information being displayed on the external screen. It is a dual-band handset that comes with a CSTN display (sucks to use this under bright light), and measures a pocket-friendly 87mm x 45mm x 18.6mm, targeting prepaid users as its main market mover. Hopefully it will be released soon in time for the summer holidays so that parents can always pick up a cheap handset for their kids who have been pestering them long enough.

Google Creates Tool To Fight Child MolestersTools originally developed to filter out copyrighted content on YouTube have been adapted by intrepid Google employees to track sexual predators through pattern recognition. Designed to pick out pirated movies, the software can identify complex or modified patterns such as calendars or T-shirt logos in images and videos, which can help authorities locate images and videos that could be considered child pornography.

Based on these patterns, authorities can then begin to track the abused children and, hopefully, bring the criminals to justice.

Google is handing the new program over to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to help them pore through the millions of images and files in its archive. Last year alone, the organization vetted over 5 million images and videos in an effort to identify and save victims of abuse.

“You always hope that your work will eventually be used to do some good in the world, and this was an amazing chance to make that hope real,” Google research scientist Shumeet Baluja told the BBC.

Samsung B510 Sneak Peek

Fancy taking a look at the Samsung B510? It somewhat resembles the Samsung M620, save for a more flat disposition and sharper corners. It is clearly the lesser endowed handset compared to the M510, and looks set to fall under the budget segment. No idea on when it will hit the streets though.

  • 65k color CSTN display
  • Bluetooth A2DP connectivity
  • Integrated music player
  • Built-in FM tuner

Disney Fans Petition to Save Virtual Magic KingdomDisney’s Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World is, as the name implies, a rather magical place. It’s also not a place that is close (or cheap) enough for everyone to attend whenever they want. It was no surprise, then, that when Disney launched an online Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK) back in 2005, kids everywhere wanted to get in on the action.

And, just as in real life, said children aren’t too inclined to leave, either. As a result, Disney’s announcement of the end of support for the VMK has resulted in an online petition launched by the kids and their parents, according to WKMG Orlando.

Over 11,000 people have signed the petition SaveVMKToday.com, a site set up by a team of players and parents of players who don’t want the site to go away. Even so, Disney has said the site has already been up far longer than originally planned, and now plans to wrap the service for good on May 21.

Given how successful most online petitions are, it doesn’t seem altogether likely this one will change anything. Sorry, kids — maybe you should start a protest on Facebook instead?
