Waffle Pieces with Lettuce and Papaya Chutney Filed under: Hors D’oeuvres, Recipes, On the Blogs, Vegetarian/Vegan What a fantastic idea: splitting waffles into individual squares and filling them with chutney! Genius. The recipe comes to us from Vegalicious, and you’ll find a recipe for the waffles as well as for the chutney. Hmm - what if we can’t find papayas? Perhaps mangoes would be a good substitute? And just a reminder: this is most definitely a vegan recipe, so the recipe calls for “egg replacements” instead of eggs, as well as soy milk and soy margarine. And before you go changing the ingredients to real-milk products, try it vegan! You might just like it… Permalink | Email this | Comments
Zayed Khan gifts Hyundai car to his manager’s son The PS3 Laptop: from Ben Heck to Engadget with love ![]() Rewind back to late 2006. The PS3 was launching alongside the Wii and geeky editors like ourselves were having a field day. We’d already managed to convince our good pal Ben Heck to build another Xbox 360 laptop and the Wii Laptop, so it was only a matter of time before we started brainstorming on how the hell we could possibly fit a PS3 into a “portable” enclosure. That’s the part where Ben stepped up his game and worked his magic — on and off for almost a year and a half — to build… the PS3 Laptop! The essential specs:
You want this one of a kind piece of kit for your very own, PlayStation fanboys? You got it. We’re auctioning this thing for charity real soon, so watch out for details (we’ll also have some video of the PS3 Laptop in action on the site tomorrow). And, naturally, big ups to our pal Ben Heck for the long hours and love he put into this thing. The man is truly a hero of ours, so be sure to hit up his site to check out his other projects, as well as the other instructional stuff he’s done here on Engadget. Update: Video of it in action is now live, check it out here! %Gallery-20317%
Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Salty or sweet, crepes are sure to please Filed under: Dinner, Recipes, Newspapers
I once whined to my mother (aka: Knower of All Things Culinary, and Go-To Person for All of Life’s Quanadries) that I couldn’t make a decent crepe without a crepe pan, and she waved my complaint away with her hand, insisting that while a crepe pan is nice, it’s definitely not necessary. On NPR’s Kitchen Window series, we’re reminded of this glorious food. Really, how can one simple butter-flour-milk mixture hold so much potential? NPR provided two simple recipes - one for a sweet crepe, and one for savory. I decided to tackle the savory one, substituting Morningstar faux chicken strips for real chicken. (The greenish blob on the top is 365 Brand Pesto - I really have to work on presentation). As I attempted the little devils, I came to some important conclusions: As you can see by the myriad conclusions, it took one or two tries before I figured it out. Granted, they aren’t as good at the ones at Philly’s Beau Monde, but I was pretty darn proud of myself. But if anyone has any tips for next time (I still have some batter left), please - I’m all ears! (Oh - and mom was totally right about the pan thing). Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Limited edition gunmetal gray MGS4 PS3 coming to America, hearts flutterPosted by: admin in Games newsLimited edition gunmetal gray MGS4 PS3 coming to America, hearts flutter Filed under: Gaming It’s no secret that we’ve been drooling over all the hot limited-edition Metal Gear Solid 4 swag that Sony and Konami are dishing out in Japan, but it looks like a select few in this country will be able to score the baddest of them all: the gunmetal gray PS3 / MGS4 bundle with matching DualShock 3. Yep, it’s coming Stateside on June 12th like the rest of the MGS4 editions and the standard 80GB PS3 / MGS4 bundle, but you’d better get in line now, because we’re told it’s going to be extremely limited in availability, and we’re calling one. We can do that, right? Say yes. [Via Joystiq]

Danger testing out an NES emulator for Sidekicks? Sadly, no.Posted by: admin in Technology newsDanger testing out an NES emulator for Sidekicks? Sadly, no. Filed under: Cellphones, Gaming Our first thought when we heard the news that there was an NES emulator in the works for the Sidekick series of text machines was one of pure, unabashed elation. The classic Hiptop form factor is pretty much exactly what the doctor ordered for effective old-skool gaming, after all — and let’s be honest, any time Nintendo playtime comes to a new platform is cause for immediate and overindulgent celebration. Our second thought was, “wait, what?” It’s pretty unclear how the emulator would be loaded with legally-obtained ROMs and we have our doubts that Nintendo signed away the rights to any binaries, so we’re a little confused about the word that this would be officially offered through the Danger’s Software Catalog. Let’s all cross our fingers, continue to pay our T-Mobile bills on time, and hope that tomorrow might bring countless hours of Skate or Die while we’re… you know, actually skating or something. Update: While not technically fake, it turns out that this 80s-vintage action is going to remain a pipe dream (and no, we’re not talking about the NES game Pipe Dream, either). Danger’s developer tools allow arbitrary Java to be loaded into the Hiptop emulator — not just approved stuff, obviously — so odds are that someone loaded an NES emulator (like, say, vNes) and went to town with the screen shots. Official offering through the Catalog, though? Not so much. Thanks, Jim!

It’s not very often that the “credits line” in a movie poster will cause you to look twice, but I was both curious and intrigued when I read that David Ayer, Kurt Wimmer and James Ellroy were collaborating on a movie called Street Kings. Ayer is a prolific screenwriter who digs cop stories (he wrote Dark Blue, Training Day, S.W.A.T., and The Fast and the Furious) and recently directed his debut effort: the seriously underrated Harsh Times. Kurt Wimmer, on the other end of the genre spectrum, is the writer / director of sci-fi flicks like Equilibrium and Ultraviolet. And James Ellroy? A very respected novelist making his screenwriting debut. (His works have spawned movies like L.A. Confidential and The Black Dahlia.) And weirdly enough, although Street Kings is very similiar in theme and content to Ayer’s earlier works, he’s not credited as a screenwriter. Just Ellroy and Wimmer. Anyway, I thought it was pretty interesting, but that was before I spelled it all out in a large paragraph. Now I just realize it was a cheap way to kick off a review of a film I don’t really have a whole lot to say about. As yet another tale of dirty criminals and even dirtier cops, Street Kings works well enough, albeit strictly in a “been there, seen that” sort of way. (Heck, if you’ve seen Training Day then you’ve already seen much of what this new film has to offer.) It’s a well-constructed piece filled with colorful actors doing fine work — but much of Street Kings offers that weird vibe that occurs when someone’s in the middle of telling a joke you’ve already heard two or three times: The new presenter might be a fine joke-teller, but as a listener you’re left with little response but to smile and nod politely. Nike+ going WiFi and 3G, headed to iPhone Filed under: Cellphones, Portable Audio, Portable Video Stuff.tv is kicking back in Nike’s HQ at the moment and claims to have official word about Nike’s future plans with Apple. They say that the Nike+ system will “definitely” extend beyond the iPod nano to support the relatively bulky iPhone and iPod touch. Interestingly, it will leap-frog the proprietary RF link between the shoe module and nano adapter to take advantage of WiFi and eventually 3G. This of course leads to all kinds of speculation with regard to Apple’s “lifestyle companion” patent we showed you last month. 3G support would presumably allow for real-time coaching and uploads of your training activity through the Nike Plus website. So let’s see… cellphone (check), iPod (check), Internet device (check), handheld gaming (almost), and now a Nike lifestyle companion (could be).
