As the bar for really, truly ripping another product off gets ratcheted up, leave it to Awang to make sure it keeps pace. The A9000 handset makes no attempt to veil itself from being seen as the impostor that it truly is, featuring the same QWERTY keypad, general design and tilt-ability as the long-established AT&T Tilt. Judging by the looks of things, those not ashamed with carrying around a Class-A wannabe will find Windows Mobile (”or similar”) under the hood, a T-Flash expansion slot, built-in camera and a lovely stylus for good measure. We’ve seen creativity get slapped in the face before, but this is a bona fide low blow.
Chewing taking up too much of your time? Wish you could find a way to get that vital, meaty protein in a gem-colored translucent beverage? Sadly, you’re going to have to wait a little longer, as the appealingly packaged Meatwater, featured on the aptly named website “Dinner in a Bottle” is nothing more than a glossy prank. It rides the coattails of VitaminWater and does a masterful job of populating the website with near-convincing copy.
If you saw Meatwater before this post, were you momentarily convinced that it was a real product (I realize the severed arm on the front page is sort of a giveaway)?
From National CineMedia comes this brand new in-theater promotional video for this summer’s The Incredible Hulk. The clip above is sort of a behind-the-scenes look at what inspired the film (featuring interviews with producer Kevin Feige and director Louis Leterrier), as well as clips from a few scenes we haven’t yet seen. Granted, a majority of what they show was already released in that first trailer, but there’s definitely some new stuff thrown in.
Most of the people I’ve run into as of late are iffy on this film, but only because of the smaller marketing push. Personally, I really want to love it. In their last podcast, James and Scott spoke about Iron Man and the amazing cast that comes with that comic book flick. Well, Incredible Hulk isn’t much different. You have Edward Norton, Tim Roth (who, honestly, will probably make a sick villain), William Hurt, Tim Blake Nelson, Liv Tyler … and, heck, Robert Downey Jr. will also make an appearance as Tony Stark. I dunno, it’s hard for me to NOT anticipate this film with that cast. I really hope it rocks.
The Incredible Hulk arrives in theaters on June 13.
Well, what do you know? We heard that RIM was gearing up to ship BlackBerry handsets to Russia in 2008, and lo and behold, the addiction is indeed sliding over to the world’s largest country. British American Tobacco became the first client of BlackBerry service in the nation, and it’s being provided by the beautifully-named Vimpelcom. As expected, Vimpelcom’s customers will be handed the same 8700g model that was introduced to Chinese users when RIM broke into that territory last July. As it stands, the aforesaid operator is already in talks with some 40 more potential corporate clients, and rival Mobile TeleSystems is also getting set to unleash BB service with 30 corporate clients. Kudos, Russia — prepare for splintered relationships, 24 hour work days and a feeling of anxiety you can’t even fathom when service collapses for even a moment.
While we fully support a baseless and antagonistic war between Rock Band and Guitar Hero III fanboys, Nyko has those profit margins to worry about. The new Front Man wireless guitar for the PS3 works with both games, and can be switched via that fancy red stomp box. Wireless range is about 25 feet, and you can get about 80 hours of rock out of the thing before you need to swap the batteries. You know, the batteries of rock and roll. Too bad the guitar costs $60, what most retailers are charging for the first party controllers.
There is a new product out in Japan that I would love to get a hold of. It’s an instant, fresh matcha tea, two words that usually aren’t paired together when talking about tea, especially the bottled kind. The unique bottle design allows the tea to be both.
The design makes it so that when you twist the air tight cap a portion of matcha tea is released into mineral water. All you have to do is shake it up. Matcha is a traditional Kyoto (Japan) green tea that is very green and is usually the go-to flavoring for anything “green tea”. It’s made from leaves that have been covered so that it grows more slowly, which makes it a little sweeter.
As a big fan of tea, I would really like to be able to try an instant, fresh matcha tea. Does anyone know if this is available in the US?

The power from your USB port starts the electrospray ionization process, creating a spectrograph of the various masses for your analysis (…) The mass spectrometry software on the device comes with several sequenced hormones, including hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin), hCG-H (hyperglycosylated hCG - for detection before your first missed period), and LH (luteinizing hormone - for detection of your most fertile days). We like the fact that it does all three (…) While most home tests can detect a level of 15-50 mIU/mL of hCG, the enhanced methodology of the USB Pregnancy Test Kit can detect 5-50 mIU/mL, and will show you the exact concentration via its friendly onscreen interface. In addition, the LCD display on the device itself will light up and show you the symbol of a baby, no baby, or multiples and your Estimated Delivery Date based on the concentration of hCG, hCG-H, and LH in your urine - ThinkGeek
On its face, it looks like the tech M&A market is holding up nicely — despite the credit crunch and slowing economy. For example, in Q1, tech M&A came to $92 billion, which was down from last year’s $100 billion (this is according to the 451 Group).
Good, huh? Well, as usual, statistics can be deceiving. Keep in mind that Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) $45 billion bid for Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO) was a huge factor (interestingly enough, there are signs that the deal may not go through).
In fact, there was a 50% reduction in deals in excess of $1 billion (only 11). For the most part, larger transactions need debt financing — which is in short supply nowadays. After all, last year we saw a rush by private equity firms into the tech sector.
According to the 451 Group, it also looks like strategic buyers are getting skittish. Simply put, they are concerned about the macroeconomy. And something else: with lower stock prices — with companies like Microsoft, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) and VMware (NYSE: VMW) — it is more dilutive to do deals.
