SNES modded into handheld by Ben Heck forum member
Filed under: Gaming, Handhelds
Sure, you’ve seen the portable wooden SNES, but if you’ve been looking for something with more of that fresh-off-the-showroom-floor sheen, maybe you should check into this Ben Heck-forum user’s design. Using a modified Polycase, dual lithium-ion batteries, a 5-inch Zenith LCD, and a whole bunch of Super Nintendo, the modder created what could easily be mistaken for a bona-fide production model. Sure, the back looks a tad bit messy, but “Life of Brian” (the SNES fan in question) has managed to squeeze in a second controller port and A/V outs — no small feat. Check the video after the break to see the handheld in action… a lot of action… like, the guy plays StarFox for a long time.

AT&T says B Block and Aloha spectrum will go to LTE
Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless
The FCC has just lifted its gag order on the gory details of the 700MHz Auction 73, and AT&T wasted absolutely no time setting up a press conference to discuss how it was planning to utilize its win in the so-called B Block. Bottom line: AT&T’s moving to LTE for its 4G infrastructure — no surprise there, since it’s the natural evolution for GSM carriers — and the purchase is designed to support that build-out. As they’ve said before, they’re tooting their horn over the fact that the B Block action combined with the Aloha spectrum purchase gives the carrier 100 percent coverage in the 700MHz arena in the top 200 US markets, while also noting that the frequency range is stellar at breaking through walls for hot in-building coverage.
As for Verizon’s C Block win — the block touted for its open access clause — AT&T’s convinced that the B Block made more sense for the very reason that it lacked those regulatory restrictions. The lack of FCC oversight is cause for some concern, yes, but AT&T continues to stress that it was “open” long before the whole C Block hullaballoo came along by virtue of the fact that any GSM device with the right bands can hop on its network.
In terms of timing, the company’s not really in any hurry; it wants to continue to milk HSPA for everything it’s worth, promising a 7.2Mbps downlink rollout through 2009, and realistically, we’ll be well into the next decade before we see wide-scale use of 700MHz LTE around these parts. A little scary for the impatient among us, we’ve gotta say.

Jean Nouvel faucet completes the PlayStation abode
Filed under: Gaming, Household
For the diehards out there (oh please, we know you’re out there) who’ve already snapped up a PS3 Grill along with a lifetime supply of SIXAXIS BBQ sauce, there’s hardly a better way to accent your PlayStation-themed home than with Jean Nouvel’s chrome faucet. We’ll be honest — the glaring lack of a square button leads us to believe that this thing wasn’t actually created with Sony’s famed controller in mind, but hey, a boy can dream, can’t he?

The Kitchn offers tips on how to not waste food
Filed under: Vegetables, Fruit, On the Blogs
It’s hard not to waste food occasionally. You make a pot of chili and the leftovers get shoved to the back of the fridge, only to be discovered when they’ve grown a fuzzy green coat of putrid fur. Or you spend good money on some fancy mini-cucumbers, just to forget them in the bottom of your crisper drawer.
Wasted food happens, but you can take steps to minimize what gets thrown out. The Kitchn is currently hosting a Kitchn Cure, in which they are helping people get their kitchens clean and ready for Spring. They’ve posted a list of Tricks and Tips on how to avoid wasting food. One useful suggestion they offer is to keep a small whiteboard on your fridge to write down the fresh produce and leftovers you’ve got stashed away in there, so that you won’t forget what you’ve got to nosh on.

Fox Grabs Some Daredevil Cargo
Filed under: Action, Thrillers, Deals, Scripts
If you read Eugene Novikov’s Aerobatics post yesterday, and were hungry and itching for more, how about daredevil cargo pilots? Variety reports that Twentieth Century Fox have captured the rights to a Men’s Vogue article about cargo pilots called “Anything, Anywhere, Anytime.” (It appeared in the March issue.) The piece was written by Michael Walker, who has previously written the book Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll’s Legendary Neighborhood (which is not linked to the film starring Christian Bale, Frances McDormand, and Kate Beckinsale).
The studio wants to turn this piece into an action thriller, which Walker will get to write himself. The cargo pilots are nicknamed “freight dogs,” and their sometimes-dangerous work has them hauling “everything from exotic animals and cars to videogames all over the world.” Walker says: “Freight dogs are the last link to the globetrotting, hell-for-leather pilots Tom Wolfe wrote about in The Right Stuff, except that instead of fighter jets, they pilot old 747s filled with Grand Theft Auto CDs or Formula One racecars.”

Can Google CIO help EMI see past protecting its copyrights?
Filed under: Management, Industry, Google (GOOG), Marketing and advertising
Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Chief Information Officer Douglas Merrill is reportedly leaving the company to become the president of EMI’s digital section. Google confirmed Merrill leaving the company yesterday, while EMI confirmed the rumors today. According to Billboard, Merrill officially joins EMI on April 28 in the brand new position, but will be based at legendary Capitol Tower in Los Angeles. Much of the business for the fourth-largest record label is conducted in London, which may signal that EMI heavily courted Merrill.
At a time when the music industry is in flux, Merrill’s move from Google to EMI is inventive and should help the music company foster growth into a realm that all music companies have had trouble entering successfully: the digital world. Apart from limited success here and there, the music industry overall has not handled technology that makes many of their marketing and distributing schemes obsolete. The report that commented heavily on Merrill’s move noted how his experience at Google can help EMI form a strategy to compete on the Internet.
For Merrill, the report comments, “the move will require either a huge mental exercise or a near religious conversion.” The report also notes “it will be interesting to see what an executive from a company known for pushing the envelope on fair use can bring to an industry that has rabidly protected its copyrights.” That’s a nice sentiment, but any hopes that a quick or painless transition for EMI and Merrill seems impossible. Like the article says, “maybe he can help them use the Web to make money instead of trying to keep others from using it at EMI’s expense.”
Guy Hands, the chief at EMI, might be despised by some parties for taking a wrecking ball to expenses, but if this move does anything it should indicate that the Internet as a tool for growth is being taken seriously. At the same time, should it really take an Internet executive to reveal that vital piece of information? Either way, since the music industry is in flux, maybe this addition can add another level of change that will excite everyone involved.

Hands-on with Samsung’s Instinct
Samsung and Sprint were keeping their cards close all day today but we finally had a chance to check out Samsung’s Instinct up close and personal. The handset’s look and feel is really top notch, materials, finish, and the oh-so-glossy — but hard to shoot — screen is sweet. Haptics for touch feedback are here as well, and aside from some strange behavior while scrolling, was a pretty useful feature for letting you know you’d actually done something — it was most noticeable, and most useful when typing. Not a bad effort, look for this to hit Sprint in June. Follow the link to the gallery on Engadget Mobile.

Chris O’Donnell is Back! And in ‘Max Payne!’
Filed under: Action, Casting, Deals, RumorMonger, Fandom, Games and Game Movies
No, unfortunately, they didn’t decide to write in a role for Robin at the last minute, Dark Knight fans. But according to Entertainment Weekly, our old friend Chris O’Donnell looks to be returning to the big screen in a pretty big way. Apparently the dude has landed a role in Max Payne, that video game adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis (strange on-screen coupling, but I dig it). Folks who aren’t too familiar with Kunis, or simply remember her from those days on That 70’s Show, will need to check out this gal in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Not only is she about to become the next HOT thing, but she’s definitely a better actress than, say, Jessica Alba.
But back to my man O’Donnell. At one point, this guy was the go-to, guy-next-door actor. Then … nada. Now, however, O’Donnell has taken a page from the Patrick Dempsey playbook by starring in several episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. (Not only do they revive patients on that show, but they also revive entire careers!) EW says O’Donnell will play executive Jason Colvin in the film, which is based on Rockstar Games’ shoot-’em-up game. Wahlberg will play a cop whose family was slain, while Kunis is an assassin out to avenge her sister’s death. Together … well, I’m sure a lot of “sparks” will fly.
Max Payne currently has an October 17th release date.
