Maggie Gyllenhaal On ‘The Dark Knight’
Filed under: Action, Casting, Warner Brothers, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Maggie Gyllenhaal made an unannounced appearance at ShoWest for The Dark Knight panel, and Superhero Hype managed to land an exclusive interview with her. I think this is the first time we’ve really heard from her regarding bat-stuff.
As expected from such a talented actress, she won’t be simply mimicking her predecessor, Katie Holmes. “I think she’s a wonderful actress and I really admired the work that she did in the first Batman, but I don’t think it would have worked if I tried to imitate her. I think the only way to do it is to do it like myself.” And because Christopher Nolan is a classy director, there won’t be any winks or nods to the fact that Rachel Dawes is a new face. “They just (expect you to) suspend your disbelief. I’m Rachel Dawes now. I mean, how many Batmen have there been? Lots of them!” (Good point, girl!)
Ms. Gyllenhaal was asked if her character would have more physical scenes in the new film, and whether or not she was nervous about those. Her career hasn’t had much mayhem, after all. (The spanking scenes in Secretary probably don’t count.) “Somewhat,” she responded. “They took really good care of me. I thought I might get bruised up but in fact, I didn’t. They really knew what they were doing. I was scared to do some of the action stuff I had to do, and I did it once, and I was like, ‘Oh, this is a blast!’” I hope Rachel gets to be a bit more of a badass in this movie, and not just a damsel in distress. She used her taser pretty effectively last time — and it looks like she gets to deliver one heck of a solid punch on the Joker in the trailer. Hopefully it’s one of several. I don’t want her to be a gun-toting heroine, but Gyllenhaal has such an inherent strength about her. It would be a shame if that didn’t appear onscreen.
Pop on over to Superhero Hype to read the entire interview, and remember that it has to keep you until July 18th.

MIU’s $500 HDPC takes All-in-One seriously
Filed under: Gaming, GPS, Handhelds
It’s huge, no doubt. But MIU’s HDPC must be to pack such a broad list of specifications. First spotted as a prototype back in 2006, the 163 x 67 x 24.5-mm / 387-gram brick is now expected to go retail in July for up to ₩500,000 or a US-equivalent pricing of just $500. That’s dirt cheap for what they seem to promise:
- 4-inch, 800 x 480 pixel touchscreen display which slides out and flips over for the cellphone interface
- Up to a 1GHz VIA C7M ULV processor and 4GB of DDR2 memory
- Dual, Windows XP / Linux Qplus embedded OS
- Unspecified cellphone radio
- Maximum 1.3-inch 60GB hard disk (or 4GB SSD) and miniSD/microSD expansion
- 7-hour battery (or 90-hours at low power)
- 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
- 2x USB, docking port, stereo speakers, QWERTY thumbpad and mouse
- What looks like a 5 megapixel camera
- DMB mobile television and external GPS add-on
All that tech allows the HDPC to function as a portable SatNav device, handheld gaming rig, cellphone, UMPC, PMP, eBook reader, digital camera, etc. Did we already tell you that it will cost less than $500? Oh right. See the unit in-hand after the break.

Tuscans may soon be able to take pets out to dinner
Filed under: Restaurants, Italy
Well, it’s getting on toward summer time. It’s the time of year when you want to take your dog on a walk right down to your favorite dining/ drinking establishment (if you live in a place where that’s a possibility, that is). In the US, and I assume a large number of other places around the world, you’d be relegated to the patio or sidewalk areas if you brought Fido along. That’s nice for this time of year, but it gets pretty chilly of you want to do that in the colder months.
If you lived in Tuscany, though, that might be about to change. Lawmakers there are looking into passing a law that would allow pet owners to bring the hairier members of the family along to any public venue, including museums and theaters. There are conditions: the pet must be on a lead, the pet must be well behaved, proper hygiene must be looked after, and the pet must be vaccinated and healthy.
If your baby doesn’t do well in with other dogs or has hygiene problems, then you’re out of luck. But if a pet in Tuscany meets all the rules, then they can go out to dinner with their person. Life is sweet under the Tuscan sun.

Microsoft unloads 500 GTA IV Xbox 360 Elite consoles
Filed under: Gaming
While folks at the Xbox 360 repair lab know good and well how to strip a console back to its birthday suit, Microsoft is going the opposite direction with its limited run of Grand Theft Auto IV Elites. The console itself is purportedly blasted with automotive quality paint and each one is individually numbered. Apparently, the 500 units — which look to come with a case full of peripherals — are only being dished out to press outlets and the like, so it seems your only shot at actually acquiring one is by scouring the second hand market. Or you could just steal one and toss a Molotov cocktail behind as you’re getting away — that’d be fitting, we guess.

Chrysler adding WiFi, data to ho-hum ‘09 fleet
Filed under: Cellphones, Transportation, Wireless
Chrysler’s added a few features to get geeks’ motors running over the years, but internet access is definitely a fresh direction. Apparently cars rolling off the line this and next year will have some kind of cellular data access (we’re not yet sure if that’s through an straight MVNO or piped through machine to machine data service like Jasper Wireless) and in-car WiFi first as an option, and then eventually standard. Details are sparse but we hear kids can spend, like, hours on the Facebook and the MySpace, so chalk another one up to team parents keeping team back-seat occupied.

Cute (hamburger) dress
I don’t know about anyone else, but it seems like life is so serious all the time. Between work and family, and the endless bills and errands that need to be taken care of, it often seems as though life’s demands suck out all the fun.
This photo brought a smile to my afternoon, so I thought I’d share it. I hope it lightens up your day too. Have a happy weekend!

The Placebo Effect + Design Solutions
You are getting better day after day.
I discovered these placebo pills by Broadhong Design on Idealist. The idea is that the more you take the pills, the more the pills get smaller. Each pill has the same effect, the only thing that differs is their size. The psychological effect happens when progressively the tablet-taker transitions from bigger pills to smaller pills. The taker might feel a physiological (mostly psychological) change as in they are getting better as the tablet become smaller. According to the designers, such Placebo effect actually helps patients to recover from physical injuries and psychological trauma.
I also found on the designer’ site these intriguing pill-candy. The concept is that each patient has a right on his/her pill information, effect and prescription. Here the pills are wrapped in candy’s paper, so the patient can easily recognize the pill’s name. Apparently, it also works as a quick way to know what kind of pills they missed from their prescription.

Still implicitly working on the emotional attachment to pills and pharmaceutical treatment, the design team worked on Kisses Pills. You give a present such as kisess pills to your lover who just caught a cold. He/she picks and chooses a kisses pill according to his/her symptom.
Labels: Pink for a nasty cold. Blue for a runny nose. Green for a sore throat. Finally, they can take away the bitterness of the medicine by eating a real chocolate wrapped in silver color!
