Trailer Park: Stories Within Stories

Filed under: Action, Comedy, Documentary, Horror, Independent, Music & Musicals, Trailer Trash, War, Trailers and Clips

Did you ever notice how Beavis and Butthead was often a TV show about two guys watching TV? The videos they were watching became the stories within the story. That’s the theme we’re shooting for this week. We’re peeling back the layers of a handful of recent trailers to get at the story within the story.

Tropic Thunder
During the production of an extremely troubled Vietnam movie, a handful of actors are sent into the jungles of southeast Asia to inject realism into the flick. Things don’t go quite as planned and our heroes, including Ben Stiller (who also directs), Jack Black and Robert Downey, Jr., find themselves in actual combat with guerrilla forces. Basically, this is the plot of Three Amigos as seen through an Apocalypse Now lens, but this looks like it could be really funny. I can’t decide whether or not Robert Downey, Jr.’s performance as a white actor pretending to be black is going to be hilarious or just embarrassing, but it being Downey I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Elisabeth posted about this one as well as the age-restricted teaser trailer, and like her I want to know what the heck Stiller is doing with those baby pandas, though he does appear to be channeling Zoolander in that shot.

Techy flower
The Moonlit Flower is a DIY project that combines tech to sewing skills.

As you close the flower’ snaps, the flower lights up! Proposed as part of the tech DIY web site, the project teaches basic knowledge of electricity and circuits and how to make a shiny and twinkle]y-twinkly “Moonlit Flower”! The site offers many other DIY tutorials combining technology to crafting. So everybody (including boys), enjoy!!!

This work reminds me of Elisabeth Sylvan’s research in 2005 on Ejewels. Participants used a combination of basic electronics materials and basic craft materials to create jewelry with lights that glow, flash, and change color.

Emirates permits world’s first in-flight cellphone call, plane doesn’t crash

Like it or not, a new era has dawned. More than a year later than anticipated, Emirates says that the world’s first authorized cellphone call was made by a passenger during an Airbus A340 flight between Dubai and Casablanca. Once the aircraft reached cruising altitude, passengers were permitted to make and receive both calls and text messages. Emirates plans to fit additional aircraft with the interference-blocking AeroMobile system later this year while adding BlackBerry and “other data services.” To keep the annoyance factor to a minimum, the flight crew requests passengers to silence their ringers and will shut off the in-flight service when appropriate. For example, during long-haul, red-eye flights or breaking celebrity scandals on TMZ… we hope.

It’s All Shia in New ‘Indiana Jones’ Featurette

Filed under: Action, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

While it would certainly appear that we’re not going to get a new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull trailer this week, we have been given a new featurette starring that kid who smokes where he shouldn’t, Shia LaBeouf (who plays some dude named Mutt in the film). You can check it out over on the film’s official website, and what we basically have are a bunch of snippets of Shia in action, with voiceover from the actor. There’s Shia riding a motorcycle with Harrison Ford, there’s Shia practicing his sword fighting and there’s Shia fooling around with a switchblade.

An interesting note about that switchblade, as brought up by Shia in the featurette: They didn’t have time to bring someone on set to teach him how to use it, so he taught himself and became kinda addicted to the thing. He calls it his “Tetris” — named, of course, after the highly-addictive Nintendo game. Not much in the way of actual footage here, save for a bit from that motorcycle chase. Am I the only one itching to see that scene already? The first images we saw from this set were of this chase scene, and they keep teasing the damn thing over … and over … and over again. For almost a year now!

Keep a look out for the new Indy trailer, which should hit at some point before the film is released (in glorious widget form!). Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull arrives in theaters on May 22.

AOL (TWX) search traffic lags behind competitors

Filed under: Industry, Google (GOOG), Time Warner (TWX), Options, Technical Analysis

TWX logoTime Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX) stock is declining after AOL did not perform well in a report detailing market share in the global web search market. According to comScore data, AOL, a division of TWX, pulled in a 4.9% market share in February, far behind Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT). However, data across the industry has led many analysts to believe that the market for web search is maturing, and that there is little growth to be found in the industry. This could be a bad sign for TWX, whose once-dominant AOL division is far behind industry leader GOOG with little hope at catching up. If you think this stock won’t be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on TWX.

After hitting a one-year high of $21.97 in June, the stock hit a one-year low of $13.65 on Monday. This morning, TWX opened at $13.98. So far today the stock has hit a low of $13.94 and a high of $14.35. As of 11:30, TWX is trading at $14.33, down 8 cents (-0.5%). The chart for TWX looks bearish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating.

For a bearish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a July bear-call credit spread above the $17 range. A bear-call credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of call options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn’t do what you think but still leverage nice returns. This particular trade will make an 11.1% return in four months as long as TWX is below $17 at July expiration. Time Warner would have to rise by more than 18% before we would start to lose money.

TWX hasn’t been above $17 by more than a few cents since December and has shown resistance around $16.50 recently. This trade could be risky if the US economy turns around quickly, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by resistance TWX might find at its 50 day moving average, which is currently around $16.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer. At publication time, Brent neither owns nor controls positions in TWX, but he does write for a financial blog on AOL.

Pepsi bought itself into the Russian juice market

Pepsi banner logo.
Pepsi Co is already a soft drink powerhouse with a global footprint. The soda maker has production outlets and sub brands in most countries around the world. Now Pepsi Co is expanding into the Russian juice market.

The multi national company is spending $1.4 billion on about 75% ownership of Russia’s largest juice maker, JSC Lebedyansky. This deal doesn’t include Lebedyansky’s baby food or mineral water divisions. Nope, Pepsi just wants the juice, thanks.

The deal has to be be given regulatory clearances from the government and the current shareholders will have to approve the spin off of the two rejected divisions of the Russian company. Also, Pepsi Co will have to offer to buy the rest of the shares of Lebedyansky from shareholders, according to Russian law. Other than that, Pepsi is in the clear to expand into the growing juice market to its heart’s content.
