Hamptons Vodka is 40% abv. / 80 proof and is a four column distillation, quadruple filtered, from 100% American yellow corn.
The aroma is light and that of ethyl alcohol with a hint of pepperiness, none of the sweetness or mellowness I have come to expect in a corn based vodka. There isn’t much going on here in the aroma besides the hint of pepper and the faintest touch of menthol.
The taste is light, relatively smooth with a slight bite or sharpness on the tongue. Basically it tastes like ethyl alcohol to me. I’m always leery when I see that a vodka is many times filtered because it means very little taste. In this case, that is very true. This tastes like any of the big, commercial vodka’s, basically clean, light, and characterless. This isn’t a sipping vodka and I would use it for cocktails and highballs where the mixers will be the main flavor.

Everyone needs a go-to mac and cheese recipe; this is mine, from a 1994 Gourmet magazine via Epicurious.com. I’ve made it for numerous Fourth of July parties, birthdays and summer lunches by the pool and it’s the freakin’ definition of “crowd pleaser.” Nothing fancy, no additions of curry powder or green onion or smoked mozzarella (though those would probably all be good), just elbow macaroni, cheddar and Parmesan, bread crumbs, milk and butter, with a dash of cayenne, dry mustard and a little flour. Baked in the oven with a bread crumb topping and sliced into wedges, it’s dense and creamy in the middle with a delicate crunchy top.
If you do want to try some additions, dozens of Epicurious commenters have left their suggestions. But I think it’s just perfect for what it is, which is why I wanted to share. I’ll be making four batches later for my pig pickin’. More on that later…

Oklahoma Christian University? Sure as hell (woops) haven’t heard of it either, but they must be the Cal to Abilene Christian University’s Stanford (or sub your fav rivalry here) as they seem ready to pony up the cash necessary to fund the next free-gear-to-students publicity stunt. This time the offering is not only an iPod touch or iPhone, but a new MacBook as well — and to sweeten the deal, current students can trade their machines in for a new one. Your tuition (and tithing) dollars hard at work, OCU parents, students, and alumni.

Oh sure, Apple’s been offering up a couple of refurbished iPhones on its own web store for some time now, but actually finding one in stock has proven to be quite a challenge. Nevertheless, a purported internal memo has explained that select AT&T stores in the New England region (sorry, rest of the solar system) will be stocking refurbished iPhones for $199 (4GB) and $249 (8GB) — of course, the deal only applies to new activations. Has anyone actually seen this go down first hand? We wonder how quickly it’ll be before this offer bleeds out from the Northeast.

We’ve caught wind from a number of employees — or ex-employees, as the case may be — that i-mate’s US division in Redmond, Washington has all but disintegrated after a Friday bloodbath that saw the entire engineering, QA, and tech writing departments laid off, among others. Several honchos who weren’t cut left anyway, perhaps unwilling to work in a ghost town or as a show of solidarity to their fallen brethren; notably, the Chief Software Officer and VP of Sales and Marketing are both gone, leaving a sales director to be promoted to the lofty title of GM of what seems to be all US operations. Apparently, the Dubai-based firm is in the hurt locker after its inability to get the Ultimate line (also known as “the basket with all of i-mate’s eggs in it”) fully deployed to retail channels in the time frame it had hoped, and meeting massive resistance from US carriers to carry the devices, it’s been left with no option but to leave behind just enough employees to set up and maintain a web-based portal for purchasing unlocked devices in the States. To those who’ve been handed your walking papers, we wish you the best of luck.

Microsoft has decided to cut the price of its Ultimate and Premium editions of Windows Vista so that they will be able to move more copies. This comes after Vista Service Pack 1 failed to see folks rush to computer stores for an upgrade, sticking to the good old Windows XP at this point in time. Microsoft hopes that such a price cut will be able to stimulate sluggish sales figures. The following will be the revised price.
- Windows Vista Ultimate - $319 (from $399)
- Windows Vista Upgrade - $219 (from $259)
- Windows Vista Premium Upgrade - $129 (from $159)
Will these price cuts make you rethink your decision?
