Frankly I’m amazed that the announcement for a fourth Bourne movie wouldn’t get a little more fanfare than buried half way down an article. In a press release in Variety, Universal announced that Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass will be returning for a new installment of the Bourne franchise. Originally, when the two were peppered with questions about a fourth film, they had the stock answer that Damon would only reprise his role if Greengrass returned to direct, and Greengrass would only return to direct if Damon was willing to star. Confused? Don’t be, it was basically the PR equivalent of keeping the idea of a film on the back-burner without promising anything too specific.
Universal released the info in a release about their upcoming slate of films, and according to them both Damon and Greengrass are definitely returning to work together on the spy franchise. There are two books left in the Bourne series, so at least there would be some source material to start with. The two are currently working on the Iraq drama, The Green Zone, and Damon has already signed to star in The Informant for Steven Soderberg and is also in talks to star in The Human Factor for Clint Eastwood. Greengrass is also going to be busy with his upcoming Vietnam drama, They Marched into Sunlight. So it could be as late as 2010, before the two can even get started on making another Bourne flick, let alone get one into the theaters. However, with Bourne Ultimatum taking home three Oscars last night (three!), I imagine the fourth flick might be made a priority. For Universal’s sake, I hope this one is a done deal. I can’t help but think how embarrassing it must have been for MGM’s Harry Sloan when his studio got a little overzealous about a certain spy franchise.

Over at Culinate, Catherine Bennett Dunster wrote an interesting article/explanation about probiotics — live microorganisms found in foods which may have health benefits. Dunster writes that probiotics have been reported to improve intestinal health, boost immune systems and reduce lactose intolerance, but adds that there is currently minimal strong scientific evidence to support these claims.
As an immune-suppressed, lactose-intolerant person with an auto-immune intestinal disease, I’ve tried my fair share of probiotics. Though I used to take a powdered, lemonade-flavored probiotic, VSL3, which I dissolved in water, I’ve switched to just trying to eat probiotic-friendly foods. My experiences are pretty much in line with Dunster’s report, in that I don’t notice a big difference in how I feel based on how much of these foods I consume (my doctors warned of this). Mostly, I just eat them because they taste good and I figure they can’t hurt.
My favorite probiotic-containing food is Kashi Vive, a cereal for digestive health that I eat — again — because it tastes delicious. I have to be careful not to consume too much, though, because it’s also high in fiber (which isn’t great for my intestines). Many yogurts are also well-known for containing them, and some companies have even launched lines of yogurts aimed at promoting digestive health (though there has been backlash).  My husband and visited our favorite local Rio Grande Tex-Mex restaurant on Monday evening. It had been a very long day of traveling back from Park City, Utah and a very long weekend of being surrounded by families enjoying the slopes. Now, I’m not one of those kid haters; they were all very cute with their mini skis and fuzzy hats while they zoomed past me on the beginner’s slope.
As we scoured the bar for an adult place to unwind, we quickly realized all the seats were taken and we’d have to actually get a table. Well, no sooner do we get seated and order our margaritas than the hostess sat two women and two children next to us. Wait, I need to rephrase, the women sat and the kids ran all over the place yelling and jumping like wild monkeys. I wish I were exaggerating, but as we sat there the kids, who were between the ages of 8-11, made about ten squealing trips from their table to the tortilla machine, the bathroom, other tables with kids and more. Their moms just sat there sipping margaritas and acting oblivious to the behavior. My jaw dropped, as my chair was bumped into repeatedly, and other patrons stared in disbelief.
This wasn’t a one time occurrence for us. I’m starting to witness this more and more in restaurants lately. Is this just something you’re numb to once you have kids? Or are kids in charge at restaurants these days? Whatever the case may be, I needed a couple of rounds of Cuervo to get through that meal!

Dan Koeppel really, really likes bananas. A lot.
So much so, in fact, that he wrote a book about it: Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World.
In an interview on Fresh Air, Koeppel explained that bananas are facing an epidemic that could, in a matter of decades, wipe out the fruit as we know it. For most of us, this would be a tragedy, considering that Americans eat more bananas per year than apples and oranges combined.
But what’s killing them? Koeppel told host Terry Gross that the fruit is being struck by a fungus called Panama Disease, which is incurable and has been known to wipe out banana plantations in a few years. Unfortunately, the bananas that are falling susceptible to the disease are ones that were previously thought to be resistant. Oops.
The main reason that bananas are falling prey, Koeppel says, is because the cavendish bananas that are eaten in America, China, and Europe are essentially clones of one another. Each banana is genetically identical to the one next to it, so if a disease strikes one, it strikes them all.
