Every time we get a glimpse of GT5, we can’t help but feel overly giddy for more. Luckily, Sony’s Three Speech blog really cranked out the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue screens today with more shots of tracks, cars, and the pit. The environments look so spectacularly life-like it’s almost scary. We wouldn’t want to crash in such a real simulation; it’s just simply too much of a scary thought.

Despite our crash-phobia, we’re really looking forward to getting in this game’s driver’s seat and burning up some rubber. GT5’s March-April release is just too far away.

[Thanks Clayton!]

Aren’t rumors exciting? They serve to raise your expectations, then dash them when you discover it was all a ruse some chump thought up in a fit of boredom. Before you run around claiming this story circulating the web as fact, let us tell you it’s a complete rumor at this point and should only be recognized by a subtle nod if the rumor becomes truth. The rumor? In-game XMB is done and Home is very, very near completion.

In addition to that, it’s being said that the in-game XMB will be used for all future titles and will be patched into old games via an update. We’ll find out after GDC and the next PS3 firmware update, we guess. Until then, it’s anyone’s guess.

Britney Spears’ request for a gag order has been turned down in the child-custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

The judge rejected the request after Spears’ attorney argued that media coverage was “emotionally and physically” dangerous to Spears.

Federline’s attorney noted that the paparazzi swarms existed before Spears filed for divorce in November 2006.

We’re pretty sure there’s a load of irony here somewhere, but we just can’t put our finger on it. Sony is selling its chip manufacturing facilities — including ones that build the Cell and RSX chips that go into the PS3 — to Toshiba, and the $835 million deal goes down April 1. (No, this is not some April fool’s joke, just really awkward timing.) Toshiba’s also in a $16 billion partnership with SanDisk to produce flash memory, so it’s looking like with the inclusion of Sony’s chip capacity we’re looking at quite the chip giant. We had wind of this Sony deal last year, but it looks like things finally got official just as all this “HD DVD losing the format war” stuff went down. No hard feelings, right Toshiba?

If you haven’t seen it by now, behold, the Gears of War, Nerf Lancer modification. Forsaken_angel24’s genius is rooted in the combination of a regular Nerf Longshot and toy chainsaw. Neither of which would cause the average Wal-mart parent cause for concern. Combined, they take on the form of this foreboding assault rifle with working chainsaw bayonet, LED lighting and sound effects… which shoots squishy balls at little girls. Full instructions for modders are posted over at the Nerfhaven forums. We’ve added a video after the break — not so much a how-to as a loving tribute to man’s god-given right to war.

[Via Hack n Mod, thanks Nick L.]

A detective, a zebra and revenge! What more could you ask for when seeking out Japanese films newly-released on DVD? I’ve been hearing terrific things about Nightmare Detective since it came out in Japan early last year. Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, who also made Tetsuo, the Iron Man and A Snake of June, among other wonderfully weird and twisted concoctions, the film was described by Mark Schilling of The Japan Times as probably “too dark and disturbing for the average punter expecting, from the title, something in the X Files line. … Be prepared for not just the usual goosebumps, but a viral infection of your dream life.” The DVD from Dimension Extreme includes a documentary by the director and a “making of” feature.

Originally released in Japan three years ago, Takashi Miike’s Zebraman finally sees the light of digital day in Region 1. This is the lighter side of the notoriously edgy Miike, a comic fantasy about a schoolteacher who pretends that he’s a superhero, only to discover he is “fated to become the real-life protector against an alien invasion,” wrote Aaron Hillis for The Village Voice. “Miike’s most accessible exploit to date … is still deliciously insane.” The DVD from Tokyo Shock includes a motley collection of extras, such as a look at the singer of the theme song and TV spots, according to SciFi Japan.
