Black Currants, a ’super fruit’ rich in anti-oxidants, have been under represented in the US market until just recently. Now sweetened, dried black currants are becoming available in a multitude of ways. Kendall Frozen Fruits has now made them available so that they can be used in a plethora of products like “healthy snacks, trail mixes, cereals, yogurt, muffins, salads, cookies, vinegars and other applications.”

The black currant is known for its intense, rich, fruit flavor so well loved in the liqueur cassis and other alcoholic beverages. A while ago I wrote about CurrantC, a delicious black currant juice beverage. I’m so glad we are now going to have other black currant food options available.

Besides anti-oxidants, vitamin C, and Iron; black currents also contain anthocyanin compounds which may help the body fight against diseases like Arthritis, Cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. I love it when healthy and tasty are combined in one product.

The hell?

Talk about your specific food holidays. First of all, I had no idea that people even stuffed their flounder with crab. Is this some sort of regional delicacy that I’m not aware of? As someone who isn’t a fan of seafood, this isn’t a day that I would celebrate anyway, but I thought I would have at least heard of this day in my web travels, but it’s a new one on me.

But there are a lot of recipes for it, actually, from AllRecipes, Gourmet, Disney’s Family Food, and CDKitchen.

I’ll go to Google right now to see if there’s a food holiday devoted to clam-stuffed tuna.

David LettermanAt first I thought this was a joke, because James Wolcott seems to be using what people are saying about this year’s election (the Clinton/Obama fight, whether or not Clinton should step down, the fight hurting the Democratic party, etc) to take some satirical jabs at the late night talk show scene. But then I remembered this piece that Wolcott wrote in 2004 that infuriated me and realized that while he’s obviously having fun, he’s also serious.

The bottom line? David Letterman should retire as host of The Late Show with David Letterman since Jay Leno is the clear late night victor.

Let’s take Wolcott’s points one by one (read the two Wolcott columns above before going to the next page.)

MarthaHow’s this for a winning recipe? Domestic diva Martha Stewart has snagged superchef Emeril Lagasse for her empire. Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. announced today the acquisition of Emeril’s franchise — all those cookbooks, kitchen products and TV shows in which he stars — for $45 million in cash and $5 million in stock at closing. That $50 million could swell by $20 million more if “if certain benchmarkets are achieved.”

Martha’s purchase, however, does not include Emeril’s Homebase, which includes the chef’s 11 stellar restaurants, including Emeril’s New Orleans and Delmonico’s Steakhouse in Las Vegas.

Richard Belzer as Det. John MunchSo who saw this past Sunday’s episode of The Wire? If you did, then you probably saw the quick little cameo by Richard Belzer as a bar patron near the end of the episode. After I watched it, one question came to mind: was he playing John Munch? According to this NPR article, he was. However, the basis for the logic was subtle and only a serious TV buff would have picked up on it. Not even I caught it and I’m a huge Wire and Homicide fan.

At one point during his conversation with the bartender (as Clark Johnson’s character Gus Haynes walked by) Munch mentioned that he owned a bar once. Now if you recall, in the later seasons of Homicide, Munch did own a bar. Here’s where it gets interesting though. Do you remember who he owned the bar with? Detective Meldrick Lewis… played by Clark Johnson. Crazy, huh?

Anyway, here’s the real point of this post. With this appearance on The Wire, Belzer has now played Munch on eight different programs. That’s insane! The only other characters to come close to that are Norm and Cliff (George Wendt and John Ratzenberger) from Cheers with seven distinct appearances each. Read on for more…
