Sanwa Peripherals For the PC

I’m not too sure whether anyone misses their notebook’s touchpad whenever they’re sitting in front of a PC, but apparently Sanwa thinks so with its new peripherals that come in wired and unwired varieties. Both of them feature a full keyboard complete with a touchpad at the bottom, just like your regular notebook to feel at home. No idea on how much this costs though, but I can’t see myself picking one up anytime soon or even in the near future.

Sony Ericsson Detachable Display Concept

Now how about this concept of a cell phone that comes with a detachable display? That’s what Sony Ericsson has thought up in their clamshell idea, described in a patent application as “Detachable Housings for a Wireless Communication Device “. You get a couple of detachable connected housings, where one of them holds the user interface devices for data input and control while the other carries a display with several user input buttons and the relevant phone circuitry, application processor, memory, and battery. When detached, they can “talk” with one another thanks to Bluetooth connectivity, and the housings were specially designed to be joined in different orientations. Sounds pretty much like the perfect handset for folks who like to customize the features within. Do you think the world is ready to accept such an idea?

Philips Take Bland Route With 192

Philips isn’t exactly the first name that comes into mind whenever you think of cell phones, and the 192 tells the reasons why. This black candybar is an entry-level handset that retails for a mere $59 - that’s less than a meal at a fancy restaurant. It comes with the most basic of functions, making this perfect for kids or your old man who has been hankering after you for a cell phone. Features include dual band GSM, a 128 x 128 65k color CSTN display, a 650mAh battery with up to 10 days’ of standby time, all packed into a body that measures 104.5mm x 45mm x 12.8mm while weighing 59.7 grams.

ABBA CL-168 Water-powered Calculator

ABBA (not the Swedish band) has just released its CL-168, a water-powered calculator that does away with the need for batteries or fuel. It comes with an 8-digit display and an ergonomic design. I wonder, assuming water could be harnessed to light up the display, it would do much better than any solar-powered calculator to date. No idea on how much this costs though.

Unfortunately, it looks like us US residents are stuck with a much less attractive box for the upcoming PS3 exclusive Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds than our Japanese friends get to enjoy. Instead of focusing on the totally cute characters of the Japanese release, we have this somewhat shady, somewhat sleazy looking man (it’s the combination of the gelled back hair and sunglasses) gracing the cover of our game.

Granted, the heart of the game is still going to be good. In fact, a recent PlayStation.blog entry elaborates on the new Advanced Shot swing mode of the game, for those of you that want a slightly less HUD-intensive approach to golf. Don’t worry, though. The traditional three-click method is still intact for the traditionalists.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue looks good. We’ve known this all along. As its March release date inches ever closer, SCEA has released a small batch of new screenshots that cement its beauty even further. Take a look at this screenshot, for example. Look at the incredible lighting on the signs in the background. The way it reflects so realistically is truly brilliant. We’d love to just stop the car, and walk out to appreciate the scenery. Maybe this engine will be used in another game in the future?

Nineteen new screenshots from the upcoming Namco Bandai fighter, Soulcalibur IV, have been unearthed. In them, you can see some familiar characters. Maxi, Yunseong, Cassandra and Raphael can all be spotted in these new shots. Also, see Hidel and Mina in these dramatic, cleavage-filled screenshots.

Who said gamers don’t have a say in their games? When the Home beta invited certain members into their fold to try out the virtual space, a lot needed worked on. Over time, changes have been implemented not because the developers wanted them (it was probably a start, though) but because you, the gamers, demanded the change.

What changed? No longer in a dome, the central square is outside with chess boards and other draughts games. Entrances to the bowling alley and theater are much more recognizable. The movie theaters themselves have been moved to the ground floor since gamers complained the walk upstairs took too long. Eight or nine basic apartments, all with outdoor balconies, will be available upon launch but premium apartments will be downloadable in the future. We’re fairly sure we’ve heard this all before, but it’s still nice to show that changes are made because the gamers asked for it and not a choice out of happenstance by the developers.

What is happening to the 80GB model? We’ve all been wondering for quite some time now. IGN has heard from multiple GameStop sources that Sony’s planning on introducing a new model — 120GB (or more), bundled with a DualShock 3 controller. If the system also includes PS2 backwards compatibility, it would be the most primo system to date. However, details of BC and a release date haven’t been unearthed by IGN’s sources.

The details, however, match an earlier rumor from Ars Technica, which pointed to a 120GB system bundled with a rumbling controller. With so many different sources confirming the same thing, we feel as though it won’t be long until Sony announces a new SKU. Perhaps at GDC?
