Snow-Day Caller Tells Media to Get Back to Reporting Real News

You may remember a little story we posted the other day about a Fairfax County High School student named Devraj Kori, who called a school administrator’s home to question the decision not to close the area’s schools for snow. Dean Tistadt’s wife, Candy, returned Kori’s call and left the boy a minute long rant chastising him for calling their home number with some harsh words, including the phrase “snotty-nosed little brats.”

Well it turns out Kori isn’t exactly enjoying the media attention either. Following the coverage from the Washington Post and CNN Kori has been inundated with phone calls from media outlets who he says have better things to cover. “I think there are issues like Darfur, I mean there are presidential primaries going on. There’s so many other things that could have this media attention.”

We’re apt to agree with Kori on this one. We may be reporting it, but as an outlet that purely covers technology it’s perfectly reasonable that we would pay attention. Outlets like CNN have probably dedicated more time to Kori’s snow day phone call in the last three days than it has to Darfur in the last three months. And speaking of Darfur when was the last time you heard anything about it? Don’t even remember do you, so we’ll do CNN’s job and give you a quick update - It’s not getting better. Government forces in Sudan recently opened fire on a convoy of peace keepers from the United Nations and the African Union, though denied the attack was intentional. And to make matters worse, the government appointed Musa Hilal, who is accused of being a leader in the Janjaweed militia and being directly involved in the atrocities in the Darfur region, to a senior position.

Now that we’ve got the ball rolling maybe CNN can pick up where we left off and take Kori’s advice — start reporting on issues of true consequence and leave the quirky stories of internet phenomena to the tech blogs.

Seal Sends Text Messages to Scientists

The Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Seal (what a mouthful), or MOm, have fitted a baby monk seal with a cellular transmitter that will keep them updated via text message. After the seal was rescued in rough seas only a few hours after being born, MOm nursed the adorable creature back to health and trained it to survive on its own.

Before setting the newly feral seal free, researchers strapped it with a transmitter that will relay the seal’s position, depth, times spent in and out of the water, and swimming speed all via standard SMS messages. Thankfully for the researchers, the whole thing is automated.

The seal might have trouble banging out “I’m on the island of Rhodes” with those tiny little flippers.

At a press conference on Wednesday, a space tourism outfit known as Virgin Galactic showed off models of its privately developed spacecraft that will take paying customers on zero-G, suborbital flights in the next few years. The Associated Press reports that Richard Branson, a British Howard Hughes minus the neuroses, plans on flying customers approximately 62 miles above sea level - just to the lower reaches of space - for a 4.5 minute weightless experience. The craft, dubbed SpaceShip Two, appears to be a cross between a futuristic plane and a space shuttle. White Knight Two, a giant twin-fuselage, four-engine airplane, will carry SpaceShip Two to a high elevation before detaching, leaving the spacecraft to journey alone to its suborbital destination.

In remarks at the press conference, aerospace engineer Burt Rutan, the CEO of the craft’s manufacturer, Scaled Composites, stated that SpaceShip Two is about 60% complete, while Virgin Galactic reps indicated that White Knight Two is 70% finished. The next step, the pair said, is to begin test flights that will ensure safety. Such precautions will be closely monitored, as three people died last July in an explosion that occurred while testing SpaceShip Two’s propellant system.

Around 200 people have already made reservations to be the first so-called “space tourists.” The rich and enthralled have shelled out $200,000 or so to claim their spot on SpaceShip Two, which is constructed out of ultra-light materials. While predecessor SpaceShip One only sat one passenger, the next generation spacecraft will seat many more in a space the AP has likened to the size of a private jet’s cabin. Inside, customers will be seated in a virtually supine position to ameliorate the stressful effects the travel will have on their bodies. Once in weightless territory, they will be free to float around the largish, floorless cabin for a few minutes of inner-child satisfaction.

We think the idea of zero-G jaunts for the family is pretty remarkable. Maybe we’ve read too many futuristic sci-fi novels, but we see this as the first hint of regular, privatized space travel for the average Joe. Well, considering the cost, maybe not the average Joe quite yet.

Either way, this story is really about the human propensity to stand in awe of the stars while doing everything possible to reach them.

Sony mylo 2 Shipping Next Week0

If you’re the type who likes smartphones with big color screens and full slide-out keyboards, but really wish you could buy one that doesn’t actually make phone calls, you may want to head over to SonyStyle.com. There, Sony is now taking orders on the new mylo 2, due to ship next week.

The $300 mylo 2, like the mylo before it, is called a “Personal Communicator.” It’s heavily focused toward (presumably affluent) IM’ing and texting teens. When connected to a Wi-Fi connection you’ll be able to tweak your Facebook and MySpace accounts and chat over AIM and Google Talk while snapping 1.3 megapixel shots and listening to some tunes. It does have Skype installed for free calling over the Internet, but it’s still not really a phone, making this a niche product to say the very least.

Mardi Gras King Cake Cupcake in a muffin tray
I find this picture, posted by Stef, slightly creepy and yet totally fascinating, all at the same time. I know that it’s tradition to bake trinkets into the King Cake, so it’s not quite as strange as it could be, but it’s still a little nutty to see a plastic baby climbing out of a cupcake. For the story (and recipes!) on these cupcakes, check out Stef’s post on her blog, Cupcake Project. Apparently, these babies won her third place in a King Cake Bake-off. Good job, Stef!

If you want to see your cupcakes (or other baked goods) up here on the Food Porn Daily, make sure to head over to the Slashfood Flickr page and join the group. All the cool kids are doing it!

When I was in sixth grade, my best friend Jess’s family ordered food from Schwan’s Fine Frozen Foods. My own family being strict buyers of grocery store fare, I remember being supremely jealous when the boxy yellow truck would roar up to her curb, the delivery guy opening the doors to reveal a whoosh of chilly air into the sticky summer heat. Her mom would order ice cream, popsicles, and the creme de la creme: a large ring of breaded mozzarella cheese that could be smothered in the accompanying marinara sauce - the mere thought of it makes my mouth water.

So I was thrilled to hear that Al Schwan, chairman of the company’s board, was elected into the frozen food hall of fame (what, you’ve never heard of it?) after he helped the chain become the fifth-largest frozen food producer in the world. And since I was younger, they’ve expanded to include a website that helps you order online. (That’s all well and good, but half the fun was pouring over Jess’ glossy Schwan’s catalog, drooling over juicy honeydews, piping hot pizza and creamy Rocky Road).

In celebration of the big clunky yellow truck, check out some of the other wacky food delivery vehicles we managed to scrounge up. %Gallery-14580%

masterchef.com logoEven though there is always a lot of information out there in cyberspace, I am constantly looking for new resources. This website, Masterchef, has recently come to my attention and I am very interested. It looks like a great culinary networking site with all kinds of community building options. I haven’t had a chance to do more than browse, but I am definitely signing up.

The site offers educational video, IM between members, start clubs, post classified ads, etc. You can use the site to post your own blog and upload videos. It’s basically a social networking site aimed specifically at those in or interested in the culinary world. It looks like a great way to meet other culinarians.

The only problem is Masterchef seems to be pretty new. There isn’t much content. However, what content there is looks interesting and informative. And the site looks clean and pretty easy to navigate. Now Masterchef needs a few more members and it’ll be a great online food community.
