Ah yes, ye olde we’re-going-to-switch-our-network-technology story surfaces again, seems we can’t have a quarter without this type of story raising it’s head. We heard this same tale back when Bell Canada was involved in all that sale / merger / rumor business, but this time Telus is the center of the fun. It seems that Telus may be set to abandon its ‘Betamax” network and is now ogling the hundreds of millions of dollars in roaming revenue that the GSM carriers enjoy by considering a move to tap into it. Of course, this is merely speculation, but the story does seem to be gaining traction and Rogers shares actually suffered a 2.6 percent drop on this news yesterday. The Olympics are in Vancouver in 2010, we’re thinking if Telus really was going to go for it — and shell out an estimated half billion dollars — that would be a prime time to roll out a hybrid EV-DO / HSDPA network.

At the nexus of MacWorld and the Detoit Auto Show is this, the iPhone dock for the Land Rover LRX concept car. Our brethren at Autoblog had a chance to sit down with Mr. Sandy Boyes, the LRX’s interior designer, to get a better understanding of the iPhone’s role in the vehicle. When docked, the iPhone would upload your music, seat settings, steering wheel settings, and all the information for the car’s “transfigurable displays.” Better yet, he suggests that the dock (iPhone or otherwise) could be offered as a “premium pack” in near-term cars — there’s no need to wait. Check the video after the break.

So to start with, I can’t say I’m all that jazzed about watching a movie about Ju-Jitsu, but this is one directed by the master of snappy dialog David Mamet — and so that definitely helped raised my enthusiasm level. ComingSoon.net now has two new exclusive photos from Mamet’s sports-drama, Redbelt. News of the film hit last April, when Monika gave us the heads up that Chiwetel Ejiofor had been signed for the lead. Not long after that, Patrick gave us the word that Tim Allen — that’s right, Mr. Toolman Taylor himself, was set to play the spoiled movie star Chet Frank. Rounding out the cast is martial arts master Randy Couture, Joe Mantegna, Rodrigo Santoro, and Emily Mortimer. The first image was released in August and these latest hi-res photos give us the chance to see Mamet at work on set.

Mamet wrote and directed the story, which centers on Mike Terry (played by Ejiofor); the chief instructor at the Southside Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Having shunned the spotlight of competition fighting, everything changes when, “At his brother-in-law’s club one evening, Mike saves a famous action star, Chet Frank, (Tim Allen) from a severe beating. His defense of Frank leads to a job in the film industry, but other events conspire to force Mike to participate in a prize fight. An American samurai film set in the world of mixed martial arts, Redbelt is a story about the limits of a single man’s integrity.” Sounds like a perfect theme for a ‘macho’ director like Mamet. Redbelt opens in theaters on April 25.

There’s certainly no shortage of companies out there trying to provide unconventional means of keeping your cellphone powered, and it looks like you can now add yet another ever-recurring bit of tech to the list, with Angstrom Power now touting its hydrogen fuel cells for cellphones. While they’re obviously still quite a ways from landing in your handset, Angstrom does seem to be a good deal further than the concept stage, with them having already managed to cram some of the cells into a MOTOSLVR L7. That transplant, Angstrom says, gives the phone twice the juice of a standard battery and lets it recharge in just ten minutes. Just don’t look for those anytime before 2010, which is when Angstrom “hopes” the first commercial phones equipped with the fuel cells will be available.

I’ll keep this short because I just did a Doomsday piece a few days ago and I don’t want my geekish enthusiasm for post-apocalyptic action mayhem to be mistaken for Universal shillery … but we now have a trailer. So if anyone out there thought that Neil Marshall was going to do some sort of rom-com or arthouse tear-jerker after wooing the genre fans with Dog Soldiers and The Descent — feast your retinas on this hardcore lunacy.

Clearly shooting for an Escape from New York / Mad Maxine vibe, the flick looks to be grade-A matinee madness all the way. For a bit more on Doomsday (which opens on March 14), check out this previous report, the MovieFone page, the official site, the IMDb page, and (obviously) the trailer. And then go outside and get some sun.

iPhone / iPod touch updates

  • The iPhone 1000 SMS limit is now lifted! Huzzah!
  • You can now “pre-type” with two thumbs on v1.1.3 now (i.e. type, type, lift thumb, lift thumb — instead of the usual type, lift, type lift, which is a big slow-down). Thanks Dan L.
  • Gmail IMAP is now officially supported! Thanks, Niall.
  • iPod touch can still geolocate, but using Skyhook only (since, naturally, it doesn’t have cell tower access like the iPhone + Google).

Apple TV updates

  • The update adds AirTunes support for the Apple TV for streaming directly to the device.
  • Your average HD movie download for the ATV is going to be about 4GB — but if you’ve got a reasonably fast connection it should start streaming and playing within a minute.
  • Standard SD movies should be a bout 1.2GB.
  • Just to be clear about how rentals work, they can’t move OUT of the Apple TV if acquired ON the ATV. If you need to finish your movie on the go but bought from ATV, you have to rent it again on iTunes with your computer.
  • You’ve also now got “favorites,” which act as pseudo-subscriptions. These aren’t synced or the same as the subs in iTunes.
  • Front Row is NOT undergoing any UI changes (at this time). Don’t expect it to look the same as the new Apple TV.
  • Search isn’t alphabetical, it’s predictive and recommendation based. So if you’re looking up a letter, the results will seem out of order, but will actually be calculated to be the most likely hit based on popularity.
  • There’s Dolby Digital 5.1, as we saw, but otherwise there are no codec changes in the ATV.

Head this way for even more on the new Apple TV and iPhone / iPod touch v1.1.3 updates:

big peppermillEveryone who eats out in restaurants has their list of pet peeves. My biggest is when waiters rush me though my meal.

AOL Food has a list of the 11 most annoying restaurant trends. I’m not sure if some of these are even “trends” or if they’re just long-held policies that restaurants have had, like the recitation of menu specials. But some of these are spot on, such as the trend to add “tini” to the end of so many drink names and upselling. Luckily I don’t eat in restaurants that have a guy who walks around with a baseball bat-sized pepper mill. Just put a normal-sized one on the table and I’ll be happy.

a plastic container of olives
Last night, my mom called me just as I was sitting down to eat some dinner. She asked me what I was having and I rattled off the food sitting in front of me, “a big salad, a pear and some olives.” Sounding shocked, she said, “But I thought you didn’t like olives!” I confessed that I crossed over to the olive loving side several years ago and have no intention of going back. She was so pleased to discover that I could now be counted among the olive loving crowd, as she has never met an olive that she didn’t like and had been afraid I had inherited my father’s dislike of the cured fruit.

These days, my favorite olives for straight eating are these Cerignola olives that I buy at DiBruno Bros. (their huge, gorgeous store is only a block from my apartment, which is both wonderful and extremely dangerous). I have also gone through phases where I prefer the tiny, salty Nicoise olives or the painfully sharp pitted Calamata olives.

So which camp are you in? Do you love or hate olives? If you love them, what’s your favorite variety? Have you ever tried home curing olives?
