plate of salmon with veggies and mashed potatoes
I love the honesty that accompanies this image of a beautifully plated piece of salmon. Yakman admits that the veggies were frozen and that the pesto came from a jar, but is also careful to state that the fish is fresh from a local market. I like the combination of time saving convenience foods with the lovely piece of salmon. Sometimes that’s just what you have to do to get dinner on the table.

Join the Slashfood Flickr group and submit your images to the pool to be considered for the Photo of the Day feature. We want to see your pics of gorgeous meals, beautiful ingredients and farmers market hauls.

A&W root beer float sodaFor my ninth birthday party, my parents let my friends and me set up a four-square court in the dining room (we used masking tape to mark off the squares). They also honored my request that instead of cake, we have large root beer floats, served in tall glasses with lots of vanilla bean ice cream for dessert. To this day, I have a very soft spot in my heart for the root beer float.

I am something of a purist, believing that only the best root beer and hard scooped ice cream should be used (none of that soft serve stuff for this particular concoction). This is why I am feeling very wary of the new flavor of soda that A&W has recently released. They call it “a creamy blend of rich A&W and ice cream flavor” and claim that is replicates the taste of a root beer float without the work or hassle of the traditional version.

I think I prefer my root beer float to come with a bit of work and hassle and don’t really think that this all-in-one version would satisfy my occasional float craving. What do you think? Would this tempt you?

a bowl of fruit salad with coconut, lime and honey dressing
Last week, Scott and I filmed the first episode of Fork You Live. Half cooking class and half show, it was an opportunity to talk about food for nearly an hour in front of a live audience in the gorgeous demonstration kitchen at Foster’s Homewares. A bunch of our friends came out, as well as some folks that had heard about the filming on the interwebs.

I did my best to to talk with most of the folks who came to watch us and one of the people I met was Diana Harman, who is a Philly baker who specializes in vegan cupcakes. We talked for a bit before we started filming and afterwards she waved goodbye and she and her friend were leaving. After she got home, she was inspired enough by my recipe for fruit salad with a coconut, lime and honey dressing that she created a vegan cupcake with similar flavors. I haven’t tried them yet, but any cupcake with coconut milk, lime and banana has got to be good.

a collection of grains and floursThere are a plethora of flours out there; just about every grain from buckwheat to sorghum is available. The variety really helps those with gluten allergies have some of the same foods as those without allergies. A lot of people have their own mixes of gluten free flours that work for different recipes.

Well now there is a way for you to share your mix and check out some that others have created. The Gluten Free Cooking School is sponsoring a blog event called “Gluten Free Gusto: Mixing it Up”. The objective is to write a post on your blog about your gluten free mix (and don’t worry, those readers without a blog can also participate). You can send all the other required information to the event director.

The event runs until January 23, 2008. All the posts, or other entries, will be rounded up and posted on the Gluten Free Cooking School website. Also, all entrants will be entered into a drawing for a copy of Bette Hagman’s The Gluten Free Gourmet Bakes Bread. This is a great opportunity for those interested in gluten free flours to share with the community, so mix it up!

When we first heard about The Agency during Sony’s Gamer’s Day last May we were, quite frankly, a bit meh about the whole thing. This new video interview from GameTrailers, however, shows off some of the gameplay and gives an interesting look at what the game is aiming to become. Operatives and Home integration sounds like a really interesting way to blur the lines and have you playing even when you’re not playing. We’re sticking this one onto our radar and are actually looking forward to its release. Whenever that may be.

2K Boston, the team behind the wildly success Bioshock, is looking for a number of PS3 programmers. “PS3 and production experience using Python or Ruby will be highly regarded” for the Tools Programmer position. “Experience with PS3 development is highly desirable.” for the Senior Console Programmer position. “PlayStation3 experience highly desirable” for the Programmer position.

Something has us thinking that the 2K Boston team is making a PS3 game. Just call it a hunch. Of course, this is in stark contrast to previous rumors that they were avoiding PS3 altogether. Could the sequel to Bioshock be coming to PS3? Considering 2K’s acquisition of the team, we say it’s very likely.

[Thanks, Matthew P.]

Got Linux on your PS3? Don’t want to sit in front of your computer anymore, but still want to play those PC games you know and love? The tutorial video above lets you figure out how to do just that. The company behind the magic, StreamMyGame, deserves props for figuring this out. What’s interesting to note is that lag isn’t an obstacle (not even if you’re streaming Crysis) because the streaming is on a home network and not the internet. Internet plans are in the works, though. But really, that’s just icing on this sweet cake.

We don’t usually write about petitions for two reasons. One, they’re usually requesting one game or another to be made available on a platform of their choice and, two, because they rarely work. This petition regarding Singstar, however, does highlight some problems regarding the game that we have ourselves noticed since its release.

Singstar has been given pretty good reviews so far (we’ll have some in depth thoughts up for you within the next few days), because it has pushed what it did on the PS2 towards new, online, horizons. Unfortunately, the reality of these features, and what Sony promises, don’t match up. The Singstar servers for the SingStore and My Singstar Online have been flaky, at best, with frequent time-outs and periods of downtime. Not only that, but Sony promised 350 songs on the SingStore at launch, whereas there are currently less than 100 (though closer to 50).

This wouldn’t be so bad if there wasn’t text within the game itself which clearly states that there are “hundreds of songs available to download”, or if there was some sort of community news update which would let people know what’s going on. As it is, people are left in the dark and are getting frustrated.
