The latest issue of Game Informer has a heavy amount of details regarding Resistance 2. Considering the game hasn’t been formally announced yet, it seems to have been in development for quite some time and is aiming for an Autumn release (so expect to see it in early 2009). There are some story details in there, but we’re not the type to spoil. If you really want to know, pick up the latest issue of Game Informer.

As for game features, this looks to be the biggest online game yet seen on a console. There are two separate story modes, one intended for single player and one that will support two-player co-op offline or eight player co-op online. On top of this the online competitive mode will support sixty players per server. Warhawk, eat your heart out. There will be new vehicles, semi-randomly generated levels and a class system for online play.

Wait, did we say two story modes? One co-op and one single player? Does that not sound awesome? Yes, it does - because, from what we can see, Resistance 2 will be made of Awesome.

[UPDATE] The game is aiming for an Autumn 2008 release. Any expectations regarding an early 2009 release are solely down to the cynicism of the article’s author.

Sony Pictures Television has just announced a deal to release “secure” and “high quality” downloads in DivX format for all DivX certified machines. The PS3 is the only gaming console to be DivX certified (Xbox 360 is not DivX certified).

“This milestone agreement lays the foundation for Sony to offer high quality video content in the DivX format to its retail partners for playback on next-generation DivX Certified devices,” said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. “Consumers want the flexibility and choice to enjoy high-quality video content from a range of retailers across a variety of devices. We are very pleased Sony Pictures Television recognizes the value of the DivX digital media solution and look forward to working together to offer a great experience to consumers.”

Some shows that could possibly make the jump include Blood +, The Boondocks, Damages, Days of our Lives, Rescue Me, The Shield, and more. For a complete listing of SPT’s offerings, click here.

In a recent interview with Next-Gen.biz, Eric Lempel - Director of PlayStation Network Operations - gives a few hints regarding the expansion of the PlayStation Network this year. A lot of the things he discusses specifically we’ve already heard about, but it’s the stuff he doesn’t say which intrigues us the most.

The interview includes mentions of an upcoming digital distribution method for providing PS3 owners with TV shows and films. Lempel also talks about some “very exciting programs planned to recognize our consumers gaming skills and loyalty in new ways that go well beyond a single score.” Sounds good to us. This should arrive when Home finally launches. When is that? We haven’t a clue, but Lempel says it’s now coming along very nicely, as opposed to the disappointment it apparently was late last year.

We’re looking forward to seeing more of these “features in different stages of development that users will be very excited about.” 2008 should be an interesting year for the PlayStation Network.

There are rumors around Fanboy HQ that an Eye of Judgment competition is going to start soon. If you already have this Eye-enabled card game, then you’re already set. (Make sure you’re practicing — competition is sure to be tough!) If you don’t have the game yet, this deal from amazon.com should set you right. $45 for both the game, the cards and the Eye camera. Heck, the camera by itself costs $40, so even if you’re uninterested in the game, this should be a sweet deal.

An interesting slew of price glitches have hit Wal-Mart. The world’s largest retailer has pre-orders for two upcoming PS3 games for half their expect MSRP:

We believe that it is unlikely Wal-Mart will honor these orders. “While Walmart.com strives to provide accurate product and pricing information, pricing or typographical errors may occur … In the event that an item is listed at an incorrect price or with incorrect information due to an error in pricing or product information, Walmart.com shall have the right, at our sole discretion, to refuse or cancel any orders placed for that item.” However, guess it couldn’t hurt, right? And while you’re there, you can pre-order Smash Bros on Wii for only $20.

At the end of this month, Sony Japan will no longer carry the 20GB and 60GB Playstation 3 SKUs. Instead, they will focus their energies on promoting the relatively hot selling 40GB model — the only model available after January. That means no more backward compatibility for PS2 games in Japan. No mention of a shake-up globally but it’s pretty clear that the 40GB PS3 is Stringer’s new love child.

Let’s be honest, gaming chairs in all flavors of “enhancement” from vibration to sound to cup holders and beyond are quickly becoming a dime a dozen — but the ButtKicker not only takes a different approach to vibration enhancement than other options but also wins the “most notable name” award in the arena. For one thing, it’s not a chair — it’s a device you can install on any office chair to add vibration experience to not just gaming but anything producing sound on your computer including music and other media players. There are also two other versions of the device for use in home theater and auto installations (you can retrofit pretty much any old Lazy-boy in your living room). At $99 the gaming-focused version of the ButtKicker is cheaper than a lot of all-in-one gaming chair solutions as well. Oh, and how does the thing feel? Let’s just say it tickled us in many nuanced ways.

Bang & Olufsen EarSet 3 Headphone

[CES 2008] Bang & Olufsen unveiled its new high end headphone at CES. I had the opportunity to try it at the company’s suite at the show.
The design is excellent, fitting any kind of ear size, staying firmly in place. Of course the sound quality is very good. The form factor is more discreet than its previous version Earset II, and that’s also an improvement.

EarSet 3 will be available in all Bang & Olufsen showrooms by late February 2008 for $250.00.

Technical specifications in the full post.

Optimus Maximus Keyboard Hands-On

[CES 2008] We played with the (elusive) Optimus Maximus OLED keyboard from Art Lebedev and here are our first impressions: as we expected from the previous photos, the keyboard is quite bulky. The keys feel like one of the older mechanical keyboard (think IBM), which I personally like. Just as reported before, each key features a 10.1×10.1mm that displays clearly a letter/icon. They look great and the keyboard is very readable. Optimus Configurator, an image editor lets the user edit/add key icons/letters. In the back, you can find. To power the displays, there is an AC plug in the back. An anti-theft lock is also a nice detail. (See it in the photo gallery)

The keyboard runs on Windows/Mac and Linux and Art Lebedev is currently shipping pre-ordered keyboards. New orders will ship next month. 104 languages are currently supported (the image keys are stored in the SD card) and they keys are removable (that can come in handy if the tiny displays die).
