It’s still way too early to call it a done deal, but given the small nugget of news we just got from STYD.com, it sure looks like WB wants to make a sequel to I Am Legend. (And given the flick’s massive box office numbers, that should come as no surprise whatsoever.)

No, there’s nothing official just yet: No casting calls or press releases … yet. But we do know that author Richard Matheson recently sold the sequel rights over to the studio … which means that someone at Warner Bros. is getting the ball rolling NOW. (And good for Richard Matheson, earning an easy paycheck like that!!) As Shock so accurately points out, this would make the first cinematic follow-up to the oft-lensed source material. (Neither The Last Man on Earth nor The Omega Man earned a sequel, which would make this the first.) Curious to see how they get Will Smith to “return” for the sequel. (Let me guess: It involves cloning.)

Oh, and if you liked the new movie version, cool. Do yourself a (big) favor and read the book now.

That little pod in the center there is Callpod’s Phoenix, a rather unique Bluetooth device that can hook up to five Bluetooth headsets together simultaneously for full-duplex conference calling through Skype or the Bluetooth capable cellphone of your choice. Those buds around the Phoenix are none other than Callpod’s own Dragon model, and although pretty much any headsets should work with the system, using Dragons offers the addition of push-to-talk — a boon we’d imagine for improving call quality when you’re all hunched around a Phoenix in, say, the back of a cab. The device is wireless and rechargeable with fresh juice coming in courtesy of a mini USB port. The anticipated December ‘07 launch promised on Callpod’s site has come and gone and we’ve yet to get updated pricing and availability details, but we may see it shown live at CES — so stay on the edge of your seats, you teleconference fanatics.

Ever since it premiered at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival, Bong Joon-ho’s The Host (Gwoemul) has been earning a lot of fans all over the place (including this very blog), and we started hearing the sequel rumblings almost immediately. (And the flick really holds up well to repeat viewings if you ask me. Queue it and see!)

We’ve been hearing little dribs and drabs recently, but Twitchfilm’s Todd Brown just shared some info that seems to confirm a prequel direction. According to Twitch, “the script is being handled by Korean comic artist Kang Full and is set three years prior to the events of the original film.” One possible plot structure involves the excavation of an ancient stream … an excavation that awakens not one but several ravenous beasties. The producers seem to be shooting for a 2009 release date.

Unfortunately we’ll have a new (as yet unnamed) director in the prequel/sequel chair, but since I’m such a pathetic sucker for anything with a giant monster in it, I remain happily optimistic.

At first listen, one may assume that leaping onto subway tracks for an iPhone is completely and utterly insane, and while we’d tend to agree, it’s not like we haven’t seen folks do similarly zany things in the heat of the moment. Reportedly, a vacationer in New York recently dropped his iPhone down onto the subway tracks while shuttling back home, and after realizing his dear mobile was missing and backtracking quite a ways, his pal finally spotted it down below. As you can probably imagine, the crazed owner leaped down, snagged the scratched up (but still fully functional) device and managed to climb back out unscathed. Granted, we can only imagine how painful it would be to drop even more dough on yet another iPhone when all that stands between you and your current one is a leap of faith, but we’d probably just ask one of those friendly MTA employees to help us out before going mano a mano with the Reaper.

As fans continue to cringe whenever more talk of that planned Justice League of America movie creeps online, Marvel is taking a much different approach with regards to their long-awaited Avengers movie. Marvel refuses to move forth on an Avengers flick until all of the characters featured in said movie are well established on the big screen first. Two such characters, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, will debut new looks this summer, while plans to bring the characters of Captain America, Thor and Ant Man are already in the works. As of now, Zak Penn has been tapped to write The Avengers movie script, but no director has ever been announced (probably because the project is still a good two, three years away from becoming a reality). But when it finally comes time to bring someone in to helm, Iron Man director Jon Favreau would definitely like to be considered.

While speaking to MTV, Favreau confirmed that he thinks The Avengers movie is “a great idea” and that he might like to direct it. He also talked a bit about Marvel’s intentions, saying, “[But] in the case of Marvel they’re pretty clear on wanting to do it with the actors who’ve established the roles or to not do it at all. That’s what they’ve said to me. I think it’s a good idea if you use the characters established in the other franchises that then come together for an event. I don’t think they would do it like they’re doing ‘Justice League’ where it’s a whole different set of actors and a whole different take on the world.” Can I get an Amen on that one, brutha!

So what it sounds like (or at least what’s been told to Favreau) is that Marvel will not move ahead with an Avengers movie unless those actors portraying the characters in their individual films reprise those roles for the film. Which is a flippin’ fantastic idea, and one that makes sense for a number of reasons. See, as a fan, I’d be more than happy to wait a few years to get a comic team-up movie that was done the right way, like this, than settle for a rush job. And the question now is — would you want Favreau behind the camera? Or will you hold off on forming an opinion until we see what he does with Iron Man?

Extra Tidbit: A future Avengers flick will apparently be teased in the new Iron Man film, as Samuel L. Jackson is said to be playing a small part as fellow comic hero, Nick Fury.

Generally speaking, boom microphones run counter to the logic that a Bluetooth headset should be as small and discreet as possible, but Joby may have stumbled upon a solution that brings the audio benefits without making the sides of our faces look too ridiculous. The Zivio Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR headset features a small, stylish body just 53.5mm in length and a retractable metal stalk for the boom; when it’s fully extended, you’re looking at a 137mm long wonder with the mic conveniently placed directly in front of your pie hole. The idea is to maximize the voice to background noise ratio while maintaining some semblance of fashion, and if the actual product holds true to the press shots, it looks like they may have succeeded. Look for an official unveiling at CES next week.

This is beautiful. All my paper airplanes tend to take a sharp nose-dive seconds after take-off. The fact that this one’s entire flight was captured so beautifully is really impressive.

Now I’m off to fold some paper.

Despite what some may say to the contrary, we can’t help but see Hail to the Chimp as anything other than a combination of the Dreamcast’s Fur Fighters and Power Stone. However, that’s not a bad thing at all since they happen to be two of our favorite DC games.

But instead of trying to defeat evil General Viggo or collect the mighty Power Stones, you’re fighting against your friends in the animal kingdom to win the crown and be the new king. Interestingly enough, you’ll be able to choose from a wide variety of combatants ranging from Toshiro the octopus to Santo the armadillo. Oh my, how the racial stereotypes abound!

Hail to the Chimp is set to hit the PS3 sometime in mid-2008.

Sure, baseball is under fire in America currently due to some kind of “performance enhancer” or whatever, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look forward to creating our own superhero of a sportsman in MLB ‘08: The Show. We’ve got two trailers for you today and since we don’t have sports games featured here that often — you’re welcome. Enjoy the second one after the jump!

Despite the fact that Metal Gear 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid Collection still hasn’t seen a Western release, we can now enjoy at least one part of the collection. Included in the box set is the Metal Gear Saga video, which is narrated by an unnamed character who apparently had a run-in with Solid Snake sometime in the past.

Since the video was entirely in Japanese we couldn’t understand what was being said until the guys at MetalGearSolid.org recently translated the video. It’s a pretty interesting and definitely a treat for Metal Gear fans.
