Sorry ladies, it looks like David Letterman is getting rid of his new beard.
On tonight’s show (actually taped Wednesday - I was wondering if Letterman would still do an early taping of the Friday show after his return from the writers strike), Letterman announces that he’s getting rid of the beard. And he’s not going to do it himself either. The beard is going to be shaved off on stage on Monday’s show by someone else.

Here we are again. Another year has passed us by and what do we have to show for it? A little more gray hair, a little less money in our pockets (have you noticed how the price of, um, everything has gone up?), and a little more fear that the world in slowly unraveling. Normally, television is there to soothe our brows in these times. Alas, the current pissing match between the Studios and the Writers is stifling that ability to the point that we may all be having Chaucer parties by mid-year because there’s nothing to watch on the tube.
Not sounding too bitter, am I?
Well, you’re not here to read about doom and gloom (unless it’s a review of 24). You’re here to see what I, and many of my TV Squad colleagues, thought television’s best and worst were for 2007. So, without further interruptions on how much I paid for my daughter’s karate lessons (you DON’T want to know), here is my list of best and worst for the previous year.

Can such a large project as the Superman sequel unravel in a single day? Certainly seems that way, doesn’t it? First there was the Anne Thompson blog post which made the rounds earlier in the day (see our post on it here), in which she speculated — and it seems a given that she wouldn’t make such a speculation unless she had some info to back it up — that Bryan Singer was likely to throw off the long-in-doubt sequel to the mediocre-performing Superman Returns in favor of concentrating on his other upcoming projects. I personally don’t see the logic in this, since Valkyrie is already in the can and the Harvey Milk film will be a small thing that need not trample on a huge payday like the Supes sequel. However, Thompson also made a sideways reference to what may be the real issue — Warner Bros.’ increasingly obvious intention of using the upcoming Justice League of America as a way of rebooting said underperfoming Superman film by tossing Brandon Routh.
Now comes Latino Review, exploding a story that they claim to have been sitting on “for weeks and weeks” out of deference to sources at DC Comics. “Kelvin knew about Brandon not being the new Superman for weeks and weeks now, but made a promise to the DC people that he wouldn’t break the story. Variety has now confirmed what we’ve secretly known for a while and Brandon Routh will be replaced in the stand-alone sequel by whomever is cast as Superman in the upcoming Justice League of America movie.” Funny, since Variety doesn’t say that at all — this is clearly LR’s attempt at a ‘whoops, I thought it was safe to leak that info since Variety reported.’ Anyway, if LR’s source is legit the move on Warner and DC’s part does make sense — Routh didn’t connect with audiences, for whatever reason, and in the age of instant reboots there are no second chances.

With all the Wiimote couplings currently making the rounds, we’re bound to see a few lightsabers out there. Of course, this is where Camy’s Pro Gear Wii Light Swords come into play. The colored plastic Wiimote holders are available in three “ultra bright” colors — including the red “Dark Knight,” which we’re almost positive is a copyright infringement. Nevertheless, the swords will cradle your Wiimote lovingly, with ample room for the IR signal to make its way to your console. Should you desire, you can flip a switch and light up the night sky with your fear-inducing — yet rather stubby — laser blade. Sure, we’ve seen similar, but these come in green. The swords are slated for a May / June release, no word on price.

What was once known as O2 Asia is now called MWG, and this company is currently working on a couple of handsets that will be launched later this year. A couple of these include the Zinc II (as shown on your right) along with the Atom V. The former will retain its original slider form factor, but boasts more processing muscle thanks to Samsung’s 500Mhz processor, HSDPA support, tri-band UMTS and quad-band GSM, GPS navigation and a 2 megapixel camera. As for the Atom V, it shares many of the Zinc II’s specifications save for differences such as the Intel PXA 520MHz processor and the lack of a QWERTY keypad in lieu of a jog dial. There is no word on pricing as at press time.

Samsung is currently working on a new keypad patent that allows users to interchange their keypad between QWERTY and the standard alphanumeric, depending on their preference. The keypads themselves will be engraved on the battery panel, so each time you swap the keypad style, the batteries are changed as well. What do you think of this idea? Are you more of a QWERTY person or will defend the alphanumeric keypad to the death? This compromise by Samsung will definitely bridge the differences for folks who can’t decide on either.

Looks like the iPod nano (2nd gen) has not yet broken the shackles of piracy as Chinese manufacturers have managed to clone it yet again, and this time featuring an actual Click Wheel clone as well! The user interface also looks more polished, although you shouldn’t expect anything of Cupertino’s standard. When will the third generation iPod nano receive the clone treatment, fake Click Wheel and all? It is only a matter of time I guess.

[CES 2008] Looks like the world does not have enough of guitar simulation games as evident by Allegro Rainbow’s Guitar Video Game that will be released at CES next week. According to Music Wizard Group, its Guitar Wizard video game is a step forward after their successful Piano Wizard title. Before you start to think that Guitar Wizard is yet another iteration of Guitar Hero, it is not. It is actually an education-focused video game that help kids of all ages to read as well as play music. Guitar Wizard will be available on both PC and MAc platforms, and each purchase will come with an actual Washburn guitar and a MIDI pickup. The software is compatible with just about any MIDI guitar for those who are interested.

We’ve always sort of enjoyed the form factor of Asus’ P527 GPS-enabled WinMo 6 smartphone, and now it looks like we’ll be able to get our hot little hands on one when Asus officially launches the unit in North America sometime early this year. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Asus thinks its first North American handset deserves 3G, so we’re still stuck at quadband EDGE, but the built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and Google Earth GPS integration kinda sorta make up for it — but we’re wait for pricing info to hit before we go looking for our wallets.
