oranges on treesIf you’re a college football fan, then you know that states have been facing off with each other since last week. However, in what we could call a foodish Citrus Bowl, Florida has won out over California in a lawsuit in which Florida Agriculture officials issues a quarantine against citrus shipments from California. The quarantine was issued to protect the State of Florida’s citrus industry from a potential plant fungus. California citrus growers sought a temporary injunction in order to keep shipping, but the Florida judge denied it.

We’re not quite sure what the big deal here is with California. Florida already has oranges, so why wouldn’t they want to keep California oranges out of the state? We’re sure there are plenty of people on the western half of the country who can eat all those oranges.

raw ground beefSome thieves got away with a bounty of beef — 14,800 pounds of it, to be exact. But who gets the last laugh? The beef may have been contaminated with E.Coli, so the thieves didn’t get much right?

Wrong.

Timothy Biela, Chief Food Safety and Quality Assurance Officer for the company that produced the beef, says they are concerned, not for consumers who purchase beef through normal channels, but “for the safety of those people who may be persuaded to buy beef products under questionable circumstances. We do not know how this product has been handled since it left our control. The stolen truck had only a limited supply of refrigeration fuel.”

The beef was produced by Fort Worth-based American Fresh Foods. The company had set the trailer of beef away to eventually be removed from commercial sale. After the trailer was stolen, the USDA issued a public health alert and is now working with local and state law enforcement authorities to recover the stolen product and vehicle.

baklava
We’re a little behind on our a Cookie-a-Day, but we’ll try to catch up before the end of the year. We have to! Starting on January 1, all of us will be forgoing cookies, candy, doughnuts, and cake, as per our New Year’s Resolutions, right?

Right.

So until then, let’s cut into a giant pan of baklava, which you might not consider a cookie — rather a dessert pastry — but hey, if we’re calling brownies “cookies” because they’re “bar cookies,” we count baklava, too. Basically, baklava is layers of phyllo dough filled with chopped nuts, usually walnuts or pistachios. The layers are prepared in a large pan, drizzled with honey or other sweet, spiced syrup, then cut into bars or other shapes.

Yes, we know the baklava pictured above isn’t as beautiful as the ones you’ll see in Mediterranean or Middle Eastern restaurants, or out of the home kitchen of your favorite Greek aunt. However, it was a good attempt at working with phyllo dough, which is tricky because it’s so thin and fragile.

brie with knifePlanning a mellow, stay-at-home New Year’s Eve this year? Looking for some new ideas to make tasty and inexpensive food for your personal celebration? Then look no further than Kim O’Donnel’s post over on A Mighty Appetite. She rounds up twelve different recipes that will help you celebrate. Best of all, each one costs $20 or less.

Here are just a few of her suggestions. Have a pizza night, which with homemade dough and an assortment of toppings is really yummy and pretty darn cheap. Whip up an assortment of veggie and legume based dips (there’s almost nothing easier than making hummus at home and you can always get creative with what you put in it). Her recipe for apple salsa and brie crostini is making me hungry even now.

Sourfizz.com is proud to announce that it has acquired a brand new file host called http://www.dirola.com  . We have made some modifications to it that make it somewhat surpass rapidshare. It can upload 250 mb at once while rapidshare can only upload 100 mb at a time. Also since the site is new it uploads at very fast speeds. Also all files uploaded will stay on the server for a full month before getting deleted while for rapidshare you have to pay to keep it up past a week. File hosts are used to either send huge amounts of information to people, used to post a download on your blog, or used to post download links on a forum. Well you get the point. Again the link is http://www.dirola.com . We are looking for everyone to contribute their comments and we will see what we can improve. We are glad to add this site to our network and hope you feel the same way. Also if you didn’t know we also have our own “PERSONAL” image host which can be accesed at http://www.myupload.org . So we have the complete set here with both A file host in dirola.com and an image host at myupload.org      On another note I would like to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR! and wish you a prosperous new year. Thanks and I hope you enjoy my blog.

Wal-Mart cans video download service Looks like Wal-Mart won’t be offering its online video download service anymore, and this news comes as a shock since the service has been live for less than a year. This came about after HP discontinued the technology that powered it, and Wal-Mart won’t be looking for a different technology partner as well, hence the closure of the video download-only merchant store service. At the end of the day, it is profit that matters, and since this organ failed to translate to a surplus of dollar signs, it is but wise to can the entire service. Have you downloaded movies before, and do you think Wal-Mart has no faith in the long term advantage of movie downloading?

Safety device from NTT DoCoMo NTT DoCoMo has revealed a new safety device which is capable of obtaining high-precision location information courtesy of its GPS function. This device enables location tracking whenever the slide switch is pulled, allowing family members and authorities to get a better idea of just where the user is at the moment. In addition, the slide switch also functions as a crime prevention buzzer switch on the device itself just in case you get into a rather sticky situation. Dubbed the CTG-001G, this device was developed by Giant Electronics on behalf of DoCoMo. Would be nice to see more of such devices here in the West.

Water-powered calculator While most calculators these days are dual-powered (that is, they rely on either the batteries within or on natural sunlight), who would have thought of a water-powered calculator? Well here you have one in the flesh, where electrolytes within water will enable you to ensure that your tax returns are all properly balanced. While this is a rather interesting device to own (at $8.99 a pop it is worth checking out if you have the loose change to spare), one does wonder whether you would use a calculator anywhere else without light. Perhaps a water-powered wireless mouse would be a much better idea.

Robot can draw portraits now

You know those streetside artists who seem to have way more talent than folks at the local art gallery? Well, you can now get your portrait done by a robot instead of relying on human talent thanks to this robotic effort by researcher Sylvain Calinon. The robot developed is capable of recognizing a face in its field of vision, snapping a digital photo and extracting the major characteristics of their face. Once its algorithms get to work, the robot will automatically function as an X/Y plotter, fleshing out your details slowly but surely. Does this mean that street artists will be out of a job anytime soon? Nah, but this is certainly an interesting development. Check out a video of it in action here.
