It’s astounding how these trends form and how much work goes into them. Seems like ever since the first video came out, everyone’s been setting their Christmas Lights to music (or sound). Here are my top five favorites:

That last one amazes me every time. I sifted through a ton of these videos, with so many people trying to pull off the same thing (even with the same song, and almost always the same band), and not one really stood up to it.

Consider this a spoiler warning for the whole post, if you still haven’t seen The Kingdom. The people over at RopeofSilicon have found the time amidst all their holiday shopping to sit down and listen to Peter Berg’s director’s commentary on the upcoming DVD of the film and it contains some interesting reveals. According to Berg, the original script had a fascinating and very dark ending — too dark for it to make it through to the shooting stage. Remember the character of Haytham, the Saudi policeman who gets beaten by the scary general early in the film, because the general suspects he was involved with the terrorist plot? Well, turns out the general was on to something. The original ending of the film, scrapped by Berg, comes after the death of Abu Hamza and all his goons. We see the team going to the airport and all the Saudi good guys they’ve met during their trip are there to say goodbye to them, including Haytham. Here’s how Berg tells it:

“In the original draft, at this moment, when Jamie went to say goodbye Jamie hugged him and he realized that [Haytham] was carrying a bomb on him and the character of Haytham detonated the bomb and the entire team was killed and it was a very powerful ending. At the end we decided it was just too much.” Boo. That would have been a much more powerful ending, and much more evocative of the cultural ambiguity that Berg tries to set up with his current ending. I wish they would have at least shot that ending so that we could see how it plays out in comparison, on the DVD perhaps.

Not nearly as intrusive as it first sounds, the Body Orifice Security Scanner (BOSS) is a chair-shaped mobile metal detector that officials are considering installing in every prison in England and Wales. Designed mainly to weed out one of the most popular forms of contraband — cellphones — the new BOSS II is said to be sensitive enough to detect even a single SIM card being smuggled somewhere inside an individual. So far the two £6,500 ($12,900) chairs that have been used at the Woodhill jail in Milton Keynes since April have helped authorities seize 21 handsets, with inmates who trigger an alert segregated and swiped down by a metal detector every time they leave their cells until the metal object has been, um, passed. While this system does humanely do away with uncomfortable cavity searches, those poor souls with a knee replacement, a bit of shrapnel embedded in their hip, or the like seem destined to toil away in solitary confinement for eternity.

Additionally, the phone checks in at just 15.1-millimeters thick, rocks a dark gray motif and touts tri-band GSM connectivity. So go on, pick one up for around 7990 rubles ($323) — just don’t rub it in when you do, alright?

When I first heard they were going to remake The Day The Earth Stood Still, I think I literally shivered. It’s one of my favorite films (I even named a magazine after one of the characters from the 1951 classic), and the thought of it being updated for 2008 really made me grind my teeth. I can picture it now: this one will have a wise-cracking hero, the young boy will have a dog, and Klaatu will destroy whole cities before he tells the world they have to reach peace.

And Keanu Reeves is playing Klaatu. Yikes.

In a somewhat unprecedented move, Reuters details a shift in format for the People’s Choice Awards. The January 8th broadcast was to be the typical awards show fare, people make bad jokes, struggle to read teleprompters with bad jokes written on them, accept awards by making bad jokes all interspersed with snippets of bad jokes from a host.

This year, in response to the ongoing writers strike, Queen Latifah will be “hosting” a magazine-style show (think Entertainment Tonight). She will introduce pre-recorded segments and clips from nominees to be followed by pre-recorded “I’d like to thank my mom”s from the winners. With waivers being denied to awards shows and celebrities admitting reluctance to attend awards show in the wake of the strike, this move makes sense though I’m not sure it will make for good television. I think the excitement of seeing celebrities live and interacting is the appeal of an awards show and this will just feel like a long episode of one of those celebrity newsmagazine shows like ET.

In a year that saw news about everyone from Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan to Don Imus and Paris Hilton controlling the airwaves, newspaper editors and broadcast producers have chosen someone quite different for their annual “Celebrity of the Year” award (and it’s a TV celebrity). The Pensacola News calls this person “a force of nature.” This person beat out J.K. Rowling, Kanye West, and Kenny Chesney.

As Scrubs began to wind down over the last few years, the question became: What will happen to Zach Braff? A few years ago, that answer was simple — he’d be a famous director/star. He had made quite an impact with Garden State, and it seemed like he would continue to make wonderfully music-laden features that balance quirk with a decent semblance of reality. But then, hopes started to crumble. Chicken Little was alright and all — a family film, so that doesn’t count. However, that was followed with The Last Kiss, which didn’t live up to expectations, and then The Ex, which ripped out the hearts of Bateman/Braff appreciators and stomped on them.

With his movie path in question until we see what he makes of his sophomore feature Open Hearts, Braff is sticking with television, but behind the scenes. Reuters reports that he and Office alum David Denman are going to jump into a drama pilot for Fox. Considering the oh-so-popular themes on television today, would it be a hospital pitch, or a cop pitch? More of the same for Zach — he’s in negotiations to direct and executive produce Saint of Circumstance. Should things go well, Denman will start as “an office worker who quits his dead-end job to become a paramedic on the night shift.” The reason for Zach’s involvement — the pilot was written by his brother, Adam Braff.
