Prep Your Gadgets for Daylight Savings End

Don’t forget that this coming Sunday, Daylight Savings Time ends. Hopefully, you got your software fixes back in February or March before the clocks changed last Spring.

Some predicted the Daylight Savings changes signed into law in 2005 by President Bush would result in a mini-Y2K. And they were right, just as when the the year changed from 1999 to 2000, nothing of much note occurred. There was some anecdotal evidence of issues with BlackBerrys, and one kid went to jail for 12 days due to a computer glitch, but otherwise the clock change went without notice among the gadget owning public.

That said, some owners of older gadgets and cell phones, as well as people who just forgot to manually install updates (and some parking meters in Baltimore), have already experienced an early time change that messed with their schedules.

In case you were caught last time with your electronic pants down, here’s a quick run down of how to make sure you’re prepared this time around. Sadly, there’s no simple fix for your confused biological clock.

  • Windows Mobile 5 Smart Phones: Microsoft released the update for Windows Mobile 5 in February that fixes the Daylight Savings issue. If your handset runs WinMo 6 then you’re already set.
  • BlackBerrys: RIM also released the necessary update for the Blackberry software in February. Simply download and install and you’re good to go.
  • Palm OS Treos: Palm was a little behind others but still had its fix out in time for March’s clock change.

Microsoft Windows, TiVo, and Mac OS X all had their patches pushed to them automatically in February,
so you should be set.

If you’ve got a cell phone that’s older than four years, you might consider calling the manufacturer to make sure you’re set for the time change.

Dus Kahaniyaan by Sanjay Gupta will be one of the grand opening movies of this year. The huge star cast is the biggest asset of the movie. A movie has a single story line but this movie has 10 different stories with one powerful actor in each movie and that’s what makes the movie special. […]

The PHP Anthology: 101 Essential Tips, Tricks & hacks, 2nd Edition is out! This is a big deal for me because it’s my first book as a technical editor. It represents several months’ work and a considerable amount of coffee. I think it’s a great book with heaps of code you can rip out and start using straight away.

One of my favorite parts is chapter 10: “Access Control”. If you read the whole chapter you’ll realize that you have a complete, ready-made user registration and permissions system, with email confirmation, groups, permission levels and session storage. You’ll find this chapter in the free sample PDF too!

And you’ll find even more answers to common problems like how to send HTML email with attachments, how to read or produce an RSS feed, how to make a customized data grid, and how to speed up your site through caching. It’s like codeine for your PHP headaches!

In the spirit of eating my own dog food, I recently used code from the book to create these slightly amusing bar graphs. They are built from the data from the 2007 Web Design Survey and they provide this shocking revelation: 50% of people in the web industry fill out surveys during office hours!

A bar chart showing 50% of people in the web industry fill in surveys during office hours

I was also able to show that the worst offenders were from non-profit organizations!

A bar chart showing that most people in the web industry who fill in surveys during office hours work for non-profit organisations

Creating them was a snap, all I had to do was copy and paste the code from the book, change the numbers, adjust the colors, and execute. It literally took me minutes to do.

To sweeten the deal, our marketing guy, Shayne, gave me a link to share with you so you can get a discount and a freebie:

I really don’t want to jinx it if I’m right, but could we, just possibly, be diving into a new era where Cuba Gooding Jr. doesn’t take on crap role after crap role? Man, I hope so. His serious acting career seems like a distant memory, but things might be a-changing. Sure, this year’s Cuba stints have included Norbit and Daddy Day Camp (although I give him props for the latter, since it was directed by Fred Savage), but now he’s got a part in the soon-to-be-released American Gangster. Following that, he has three projects on the pike — 2 dramas and a decent-sounding comedy, Harold. Not too shabby.

Topping off this better-sounding sundae, The Hollywood Reporter has posted that Gooding Jr. will star in the upcoming action thriller The Way of War, coming from the Fatwa team Scott Schafer (writer) and John Carter (director). Not too much is being said about the plot, other than producer Nick Thurlow noting: “John Carter and Scott Schafer have crafted a political thriller with deep resonance for our times.” So basically, it’s some sort of war movie, and maybe terrorists, oil, or something similar will be involved. Thurlow also discussed Cuba’s casting, saying: “With his intensity and ability to take a character to the edge, the part is tailor-made for Cuba, and we’re excited to have him aboard.” That’s not something we hear every day, but it’s bringing me back to the good old days of Cuba, so I don’t mind. Are we approaching the new wave of Cuba Gooding Jr.?

Tonight the kids (and more than a few adults) will be trick or treating, and our friends over at Mahalo have a guide on how to trick or treat safely. It covers everything from what you should do before you even head out the door (make sure you have a flashlight and a cell phone!), where to go (don’t go to homes that don’t have any lights on), and what do to with the candy when you get home (make sure candy is wrapped, and cut into all apples - I’ll go one step further and say don’t eat apples at all).

I don’t have kids so I don’t know how kids trick or treat nowadays. Do they still go all over the place to all houses or just stick to their neighborhood? Or do you take them to a party instead?

The latest issue of Famitsu features an interview with the Monster Hunter team. Many PS3 fans were angered when the company made a surprising platform change for the upcoming Monster Hunter 3. The PS3 version of the game was canceled and became a Wii exclusive.

According to Famitsu (translation by IGN), representatives of Capcom had a “big apology” for PS3 fans. “Famitsu pointed out that some people may have purchased a PS3 once Monster Hunter 3 was announced last year. This drew a big apology from the Capcom reps, who said that PS3 owners should wait for further announcements in the series.”

Capcom is supposedly increasing their focus on PS3 development, but no significant projects have been announced for PS3 yet. A PS3 port of Lost Planet was recently revealed at its Gamers Day. If Capcom’s asking PS3 owners to “wait” for another MH-related announcement, we have a feeling many Sony fans are going to be quite disappointed.

Cate Blanchett has been known as much for her luminous skin as for her top-notch acting and adventurous style — and now she’ll be known as the face of SK-II, a high end skin care line known for its cutting edge technology. The star tells AP that wearing their signature Facial Treatment Mask is part of her skin care ritual. “[Her children] see it and just roll their eyes,” said the Oscar-winning actress, speaking from Rome. “They’ll wake up in the morning, and I’m making their sandwiches for school and I’ve got the mask on.” She even gave some of the masks to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button co-star Brad Pitt. “I’m evangelical about it,” Blanchett tells AP. SK-II, whose products retail for between $60 and $300, is available on saks.com.

It’s no secret that we covet Lauren Conrad’s easy style — so we had to know what her favorite things are! The Hills star let PEOPLE in on her fall must-haves — and we are thrilled at how affordable a few of them are. L.C. loves her heels, and among her favorite pairs are the “Rio-8″ spectator Dolce Vitas. Says lauren, “I love Mary Janes, they’re really cute. This pair of Dolce Vita’s make me tall.” The California girl likes sticking with easy breezy dresses but when she does slip into a pair of jeans she opts for the Lux high waisted three button jean. Her dress of choice? The Audrina, from her namesake clothing line. “I love the Audrina dress. All the pieces are comfortable and emulate my personal style.” The designer’s favorite accessory is a Hamsa hand red string bracelet. “This was a gift from friends when I was having a hard time. It protects me,” says Lauren. And when it comes to fragrance, Lauren loves her Miss Dior Cherie.
