So, it’s been almost two years since we first published a little a piece on getting your thumbnails to work again in Adobe Creative Suite 2. The exec summary: Adobe disabled many of thumbnails that used to display in Explorer, presumably to ‘motivate‘ CS3 users to use Bridge. After some teeth gritting and a little research, we figured out a workaround and published it there.
Two years later, it’s been one of our more popular posts ever since — approaching 140 comments last time I checked, and generally getting another comment or two most weeks.
However, Adobe still like Bridge and still want to use Bridge, so responded by making things just that little bit more difficult in CS3. If allowed, Illustrator CS3 checks that thumbnails are disabled every time it starts — if it finds they aren’t, it makes changes to ensure they are.
If you let it that is..
Thankfully the issue has been solved, and I’m keen to pass on the solution and the credit for it.
William M Park is a talented painter, Photoshop power user and apparently sometime registry tweaker.
Along with the DLLs and REG files mentioned in the original solution, William has put together a detailed PDF explaining the registry changes CS3 users will need to make to get their AI and PSD thumbnails back.
You can download the PDF, DLL and REG files in a nice neat ZIP from here.
Nice work, William.

Word has it this morning that Wonder Woman has finally — thank the friggin’ Lord, I tell ya! — been cast in the upcoming live-action Justice League of America. Moviehole reports (via the director of one of the gal’s most recent flicks) that Teresa Palmer has, in fact, landed the role. I’m going out on a limb here, but I’d say the director Moviehole spoke with was Ron Hardy, who worked with Palmer on December Boys. Since that was an Aussie pic, and Clint from Moviehole is an Aussie, I’d imagine he’s pretty close to the production. But I could be wrong, and if I am, Clint will send us an email.
Anyway, this looks to be a bit stronger than any other rumor — Clint has already updated the post telling us an Aussie newspaper is running the rumor today, and the entire online community is buzzing. Could we finally have our first official (damn you Biel!) Justice League cast member? Palmer is an up-and-comer; she got her start in Wolf Creek as a background actress, before going to do films like The Grudge 2, December Boys and the upcoming Kids in America. She’s Australian, which automatically makes her sexy enough for this role in my book, and she’s 21-years-old. Nothing is set in stone yet, but you might as well start debating — is Teresa Palmer a good fit for Wonder Woman?

We aren’t etching this in stone just yet, but we’ve seen numerous reports claiming that the recent partnership between 3 and Skype will soon lead to an actual piece of hardware. Reportedly, the 3Skypephone will be available on October 29th “for a pre-launch,” and will be officially official on November 2nd. Specs wise, it should feature free calls to other Skype users / 3Skypephone owners, a two-megapixel camera, video capturing and an MP3 player. Interested consumers can supposedly choose from three different colors, and it should be available on the “£12 ($25) Mix and Match 100 tariff which offers 100 minutes or texts or any mix of the two.” Ah well, at least we’ve but a few days left to find out for sure, eh?

Generally speaking, mishmash concepts involving a cellphone and just about anything wearable haven’t exactly taken off, but if Maxwell Smart can do it, why can’t Samsung? In a recent patent application from the firm, a “wrist wearable type portable terminal” is described, which essentially acts as a wrist strap that functions as a cellphone holster. Granted, the idea could be problematic in a myriad ways — leading to public humiliation and a lack of broad compatibility with mobiles for starters — but we can’t fault ‘em for trying.

There it is, the first spy shot of Nokia’s N82. Don’t remember this Espoo candybar? No worries, the last update was way back in May when news was first leaked. Back then, the N82 was rumored to pack quad-band GSM, 2100MHz HSDPA, a 2.4-inch 240×320 display, WiFi, GPS, FM Tuner and biggie 5 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss lens. So until we hear otherwise, that’s what we’ll assume until the supposed announcement on November 2nd. Right, that’s just 1 week from today.

What could that be? The sound machine project consists of a pneumatic quintet that will be playing at the Hanover Fair. Five automatic sound machines will provide musical accompaniment for the opening celebrations at the Hanover Fair. Pneumatic components and a PLC control system will be applied very differently from the way they are used in industrial automation: They will create a bridge between technology and art.
21 micro-cylinders are used in each sound machine. The micro-cylinders imitate the mechanical movements of a musician’s left hand on the string instruments, determining the pitch of the tone by changing the length of the strings. Various drumsticks and a jazz brush are moved on the drum by micro-cylinders.
“The idea of constructing musical robots or music machines is by no means new. The 18th century was the heyday of the machine constructors. However, the technical possibilities of Roland Olbeter’s sound machines by far transcend those of earlier music-boxes, especially since electronic media open up entirely new realms of sound.” - Festo

I’ve always been a fan of baking with cranberries. I have a recipe for cranberry bread that I’ve been making since I was eight years old (which I’ll post as soon as I make it this season) and I often use a combination of cranberries and apples in crisps and crumbles. I spotted this Cranberry Upside Down Cake over at the Urban Vegan on Tuesday and it called to me. It also has the added benefit of being a vegan recipe, perfect for those holiday gatherings with family who have dietary limitations (you could easily un-veganize it if you so desired).

Clément Première Canne Rhum is 40% abv. / 80 proof. This is a premium white rum that is estate bottled and Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée Martinique, produced and bottled in French Martinique. It is made by the same folks who make Clément Creole Shrubb orange liqueur. Première Canne is distilled from pure cane crush, as opposed to many rums which are made from molasses, and so is what is referred to as a A. O. C. Rhum Agricole.
Habitation Clément’s Rhum’s may just be some of the finest rums made in the world. Since they are in the rum agricole style which lends itself to producing dryer, almost cognac like rums of great complexity. Every single rum they make is good enough to be considered a sipping rum to have out of a snifter or on the rocks. But with so much going on that they make extra-ordinarily good cocktails as well.
Habitation Clément created what is now called A. O. C. Rhum Agricole back when it was first purchased by Homère Clément in 1887. Martinique was known to produce the best quality sugar in the world, but at a steeper cost than elsewhere. At the time there developed a sugar crisis on Martinique as Europe started buying less expensive sugar from Central and South America.

I used to love those plastic vampire teeth when I was a kid. Of course, this was before we had the technology to make them glow in the dark. They were just white. I think if I had glow in the dark ones I would have warn them all year round and not just around Halloween.
This recipe comes from CupcakeRecipe.net, and it’s for Punk Glow in the Dark Halloween Cupcakes. She takes two flat-topped cupcakes, lots of icing, a jelly bean, and those white fangs to create a rather wild looking punk rock vampire cupcake. And Punk Rock Vampire Cupcake would make for an awesome band name.

I love pumpkins, but I always find it a waste to carve them into Jack o’ Lanterns. The big pumpkins aren’t that good to eat anyway, but even if you get the cute small sugar pie pumpkins, carve them up, and let them sit out in the open air on your front porch for two weeks, you have to throw them away when you’re all done. The better thing to do is to decorate pumpkins in a way that you can eat them later. Painting faces on them is fine, but messy and requires time and creativity. Now I’m not saying you’re not creative, but there is that time issue.
Thankfully, you can just pick up some Halloween “costumes” for your pumpkins, a la Mr. Potato Head. All of the costume pieces are pushed into the pumpkin, the same way you push them into Mr. Potato Head. These are made specifially for pumpkins, since they’re bigger than the toy, but if you’re dressing up smaller pumpkins, nothing’s stopping you from nabbing your kids’ toys out of the playroom and using them!
The Pirate, R2D2, and other “costumes” are available on Amazon.
