I’m a Melissa George fan, although I think she’s sort of wasted in most of the films she does. I’ll say no more on that subject, since I’m already addressing it in my upcoming review of 30 Days of Night. Anyhow, the outspoken Aussie is making a small bit of news this morning, having told ComingSoon that, in spite of everything we’ve heard, Jan de Bont’s Stopping Power, which was recently shut down, is completely back on and will begin shooting in March. “It’s back on!” George tells the site, with typical breathlessness. “First of March. Three days into filming, we were in Berlin, they cancelled the film. It worked out so good, because I’m busy doing other things, and I could come back to shoot. HBO and I’m going away next Christmas, and then the strike happens next year, so I’m going to go away in March and do this. Look, anything can change, but it’s on. It has to be on.” That last part sounds like she might be sort of ‘willing’ the project into life, but still, she does give a solid date.

By the way, when I spoke with 30 Days of Night graphic novelist Steve Niles a couple of months back, he told me of early plans to push forward with a sequel to the film, called Dark Days, if everything went well at the box-office. Dark Days is a project that would be entirely focused around the character played by George — is Hollywood ready to entrust her with carrying an entire action-horror film on her shoulders? I think it’s a safe bet — this is an actress with a lot of potential who could use a great, high-gloss breakout role like that. Stay tuned to Cinematical for all future info on Stopping Power and Dark Days, should they actually happen!

If you’ve ever tried to manipulate an Excel file (or similar) on a 320 x 240 resolution display in the palm of your hand, we totally understand your pain. Thankfully, a few dutiful individuals at BYU have concocted a snazzy way to get handheld imagery onto tabletop displays, and there’s even a video to prove it. To demonstrate, the team utilized a Sony VAIO UX, which was mounted on a conductive frame that “established an electrical connection between the user’s grasp and the unit’s feet.” Once the UX was placed on a larger display, it then beamed its images out and even allowed users to scroll around or reposition the output by simply touching the display and / or moving the UX. Granted, the actual technology behind all this “Spilling” is more complicated than we’ve room to mention, so just do yourself a favor and peek the (slightly monotonous) video in the read link. picture of a notecard file boxEver buy seasonings in those packets (not that I am particularly endorsing that behavior as they are often full of chemicals) from the grocery store but struggle with how best to store them? Then this tip from the Unclutterer might be up your alley. Get yourself one of those plastic 3×5 (or 4×6 for the larger packets) notecard boxes and pop the packets in there. Keeps them contained, orderly and bug-free (if you really want to satisfying your inner anal retentive, go ahead and alphabetize them)!

Shatner To Appear in Next 'Star Trek'After the revelation that relative unknown Chris Pine would be taking the role of Captain Kirk in the next ‘Star Trek‘ film, geeks everywhere revolted — despite having never heard of the guy. But, Trekkies and Trekkers everywhere, put down your keyboards and stop it with the yelling and screaming: It looks like Shatner will indeed be making an appearance in the film.

The next ‘Trek’ will take the Enterprise crew back to the beginning, to their halcyon days back at Starfleet Academy. It’s been reported that Leonard Nimoy will make a guest appearance as Spock as well, meaning the film will probably start with both he and Shatner reminiscing about the old days.

‘Hulk’ star Eric Bana will be the villain, ‘Shawn of the Dead’ star Simon Pegg will be Scotty, and ‘Heroes’ mystery-man Zachary Quinto will be Spock. Beyond these tasty tidbits, not much else is known about the film, which is set to be released in November of 2008.

One thing is for sure, though — expect Kirk’s famous (in the right circles) Kobayashi Maru hacking job to be portrayed on the big screen.

Dash Express Geo-Feeds

The new Dash Express for which we had the an exclusive hands-on recently just got better: it will display 3rd party or user-generated geo-data feeds available from the web (it’s a connected GPS system). Zillow is an example cited by Dash (the company) but there will be many others. You can imagine something like housingmaps in the car with the Dash Express and of course, the possibilities are endless. Dash goes to the next level and raises the bar for all GPS navigation systems. Now the static and limited points of interests (POI) seem so yesterday. Look at the photo gallery.

Google dips fingers in health industry Google is set to follow Microsoft where health and medical records are concerned, with a target date of early next year slated for Google Health to roll out. Since Internet users already use Google as a starting point to look for health and medical information, why not apply Google’s expertise in indexing, searching, and managing vast amount of information? In addition, Google will be able to further ring up the cash registers by targeting the health industry with its Adwords program. Reports have shown that Google aims to bring together health-related search features, health and lifestyle information (like diet and exercise programs), and a localized “find a doctor” feature. Many of these aspects will be free, but you’ll have to fork out a subscription fee for some applications.

Capcom’s press site has alerted us to some updated information regarding Devil May Cry 4 and, seeing how we’re kind spirits and all, thought we’d forward the information to you. A lot of it is rehashed info, so we’ll cut through that recycled garbage (oxymoron?) and deliver you the news you want to know.

Appearances by Trish, Lady, Dante, and pretty much the entire DMC cast ensemble are to be expected. Nero is described by Capcom as “cynical and prefers being a lone wolf, often labeled emo.” That made us giggle a little bit. But probably the most important slice of information is a solid release date scheduled by Capcom — a street date of February 2008 has been set. We’ll have some more DMC4 news for you in a little bit, so don’t worry, fans of the franchise, more news is coming.

People who are opposed to the legalization of drugs should consider the following: cocaine is having a better year than the stock market.

This fun fact courtesy of WallStreetFighter paints a very grim picture of the War on Drugs. Addicts are paying more for less-pure Bolivian marching powder. From January through June, the average price per gram of domestic cocaine purchases rose 24% from $95.89 to $118.70, while purity fell. Retail (involving 10 grams or more) prices rose 15% while “mid-level” wholesale prices surged 33% and wholesale (1 kilogram or more) prices jumped 11%.

Cocaine is a helluva drug — just ask any celebrity. Heck, read any story on TMZ.com about Britney Spears and you’ll understand. Supplies are down and demand is steady. That’s the type of stable cash-flow business that usually attracts private equity, no?

Now consider that the Dow Jones industrial average rose 10.8% this year. The S&P 500 Index is up 7.98% while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index has surged more than 14% Cocaine has had a better year than many blue-chip stocks including General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) (up 10%), News Corp. (NYSE: NWS) (up 5.5%) and Procter & Gamble Co. (NYSE: PG) (up 9.7%). Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) 35% does beat cocaine but not by much.

Unlike most products, cocaine really does sell itself as does pornography. Lots of people — mostly really bad people — are getting rich off drugs. Why shouldn’t the federal government? Researcher Jon Gettman estimates that the government loses $31.1 billion in taxes because of the prohibition against marijuana, according to the Marijuana Policy Project. You can bet that the figures would be similar for cocaine.

Imagine how much money Uncle Sam could reap if he taxed cocaine or marijuana? What does the War on Drugs cost? Hundreds of millions? That money could be used to fund a real war on drugs — treating addicts whose lives have been destroyed.
