Hilary Swank offered Londoners a taste of her demure wardrobe yesterday, appearing at two events for perfumier Guerlain, looking equally chic at both. The actress made a seemingly effortless change from a Louis Vuitton 1940’s inspired belted suit (worn at a perfume signing at Selfridges that afternoon) into a fabulous Dolce and Gabbana corseted black dress later that evening when she co-hosted a dinner with Guerlain in London’s glitzy Mayfair. “I love this dress,” she told PEOPLE accepting compliments most graciously. “I just put it on, it didn’t need any alterations, it’s great,” she beamed, accessorizing with a Jimmy Choo clutch and heels. With guests such as Mick Jagger, Bryan Ferry, Kid Rock and Harry Connick Jr. turning up to fete the Oscar winning actress and face of the latest Guerlain fragrance ‘Insolence’ - the svelte actress described the scent in her own words: “To me it encapsulates a lot of different emotions. I think it’s fresh, it’s young but I think it’s classy and can feel older.” A spritz or two later, and we agreed– it’s a classic, much like the hostess herself. Snooze concept phone

The Snooze concept phone marries a slick white cellphone and an alarm clock of the same color. Since most (if not all) handsets these days already come with the all-important alarm clock function, this concept doesn’t really make any sense. I suppose the only advantage would be the rather large red LED display located at the base of the handset that looks just like a traditional electronic alarm clock, with the all important “Snooze” word etched at the back to state its intentions. Should this concept actually materialize, it would be more of a novelty than anything else.

A lot of people are seemingly comparing the PS3 to a number of other systems. First, it was a 3DO. Now, it’s a Gamecube. GamePro took ten months of NPD data and made an intriguing graph showing the sales for both the PS3 and the Gamecube. Although Nintendo’s last-gen system featured a number of genre-defining hits, such as Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4, it failed to capture the same market share as its competitors. The current momentum of PS3 seems to suggest that Sony’s system may meet the same fate, if it continues to follow its current trend.

There are differences, of course. Gamecube had a relatively short life span, with Nintendo reusing the technology in its currently best-selling Wii console. Sony has stated a potential ten-year life cycle for PS3, one that suggests they’re planning for a much longer life cycle than that of the Gamecube.

Although a price cut and a redesigned system may revitalize sales, Sony could always follow Nintendo’s footsteps in the years to come: simply duct-tape two PS3s together and call it the PS4.

Andy Clarke presenting at Web Directions South 2007

At Web Directions South 2007 in Sydney yesterday, I caught up with SitePoint author Cameron Adams (themaninblue.com) and renowned designer Andy Clarke (stuffandnonsense.co.uk), both of whom spoke at the conference.

Andy spoke about comic book design and layout (summary by Matt Magain), and some of the lessons it can teach us about web design. I asked Andy about comic book typography.

Cameron Adams
“Does that also mean you’re advocating more use of Comic Sans, Andy?”
Andy Clarke
“Comic Sans is one of my absolute favorite fonts, and expect it to crop up in several projects.”
Cameron Adams
“You heard it here first.”

Cameron spoke about the wide range of user interface possibilities that are now available to designers thanks to maturing JavaScript libraries, and using them to provide truly customizable user experiences.

It looks like Nintendo’s exodus from Redmond continues to have repercussions with some familiar names at the company, with senior public relations director Beth Llewelyn now making it official that she won’t be making the move to the big N’s new San Francisco office. This follows a similar announcement from Senior VP of Marketing George Harrison earlier this month, leaving Perrin Kaplin the last of the big three rumored departures to make up her mind about the move. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Llewelyn’s last day at Nintendo will be on September 28th, after which she says she’ll be “taking some time off to be a full-time mom for a bit.” No word on a successor just yet, but it looks like Nintendo will soon have quite a few positions to fill if things continue at this pace.

Mac Laptop Dipped in Gold

Hardcore PC-modding Web site computer-choppers.com has gained notoriety on the Internet with amazing projects like the PC made out of a vintage Marantz stereo and the computerized ode to the Digg.com logo. Today, the guys behind the site are making waves with their latest customization: a MacBook Pro that they’ve painted up in 24k gold.

And, make no mistake: This isn’t a Maaco-style outside spray job. Computer Choppers disassembled the laptop into pieces and have painted everything, including the keyboard, the battery cover, the screen bezel and screen hinge.

Though this started as a one-off “let’s see if we can do it” kind of thing, the Computer Choppers site is now offering to give other Macbooks the Trump treatment for between $1,200 and $1,500 a pop depending on the current price of gold. If you’d like to become a goldmember, you can expect to go sans-computer for up to four weeks.

As if we needed further confirmation that the 40GB PS3 is on its way Play.com are listing such a creature on their website. Though it is not yet available, and has no price attached to it, there is a sign up sheet where you can express interest by submitting your email address. The listing says that the 40GB PS3 will lack any backwards compatibility and will have only two USB ports. We’re curious that there is no mention of the memory card readers as we would have suspected those to be the first to go, before the USB ports.

The biggest piece of information to come out of this (other than an all-out confirmation that the 40GB is going to happen) is that Europe (or, at least, the UK) will be getting a slice of the 40GB pie. This is great news considering David Reeves, president of SCEE, has stated that a price cut will not be happening this year in European territories, instead opting to produce “value added bundles” like the starter pack. How much the 40GB will cost in Europe is still a mystery, though a £299 price point has been kicking around recently.

With the new PS3 SKU all but confirmed, we’re anxious to see what Sony’s “big bang” announcement will be later this month. If retailers are already advertising for the device on their site then Sony are going to have to reveal a little more than we already know to truly impress us. We’ll see what happens when the twelfth swings around.

[Thanks Daniel!]

It’s never been a secret that Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series was inspired by Kurt Russell’s Snake and his exploits trying to escape a few cities, but we never really knew how close those similarities are until now. Aint it Cool News recently won an eBay auction for a previously unreleased and unapproved Escape from L.A. script. The site posted pieces of the script, and it’s pretty amazing reading it as you can imagine several parts that could have easily have fit into a Metal Gear game.

Not only does the script describe several characters with super-human abilities, it also reveals that the movie’s antagonist clones Snake in an attempt to create the world’s most elite soldiers. Yeah shocking, right? Well, he also plans on “removing certain genetic limitations, and retaining the benefit of the memories and experiences of the original subject.”

After this revelation, it’s interesting to think just how closely the Metal Gear series could have followed Escape from L.A. if this script had been given the green light.
