Katherine Heigl’s elegant Emmy took its inspiration from another cool blonde, Grace Kelly. Makeup artist Monika Blunder kept the eye neutral, first applying Ombre d’Eau, a liquid-y eyeshadow, in Sand, $30, then brushing on a pressed eyeshadow in the champagne colored Dessert-Rose, $39, on top of that to give her eyes “a sparkling glow.” She dotted Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Ebene, $27, between her lashes, and then applied three coats of Inimitable Mascara in Noir, $28, on the upper lashes. Blunder brought out her cheekbones by contouring the hollows first with Powder Blush in Nude, $40, and then brushing the tops of the cheeks with Narcisse, $40, a light pink color. Before applying lipstick, she used Lip Definer in Red, $29, to fill in the lips. For Heigl’s bright red lips, Blunder chose Rouge Allure Lipstick in Lover, $30, because of its pink undertones. She finished the look by brushing on a bit of translucent powder to “help it stay throughout the show.”

Hair stylist Campbell McAuley created a complementary old school– yet modern– style to go with the makeup and went for a cool twist on the bun. He put Katherine’s hair in Velcro rollers when it was still wet, blew it dry and sprayed with Frederic Fekkai Coiff Fini Sheer Hold Hairspray, $23. Then he removed the curlers, except for two in the front and brushed out the curls, using Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream, $20, to set the hair. He divided the hair into three sections and then wrapped each section in a different direction to create three separate buns. He took the two front curlers out and worked back into the hairstyle to create a soft, touchable look on the top.

Alienware sets new record

Alienware computers and notebooks are always at the forefront of cutting-edge technology, that no one can deny. They have done it yet again by releasing the first notebooks that come with massive 320GB hard drives, with the Area 51 m1550 representing the 15.4″ segment and the Aurora m9700 and Area 51 m9750 taking honors for the 17″ segment. The 17″ systems come with dual bays, enabling you to install another 320GB hard drive, bringing the total to a mammoth 640GB. That’s around 107 average games for you to tote along - definitely more than you can handle even on a round-the-world flight. Pricing for the Aurora m9700 begin from $1,599 upwards.

After adamantly insisting that you do not videotape or record the screening in any way or else, the Square Enix private theater showcased numerous titles from the ever-expanding Final Fantasy universe. The first trailer on display was the lead game in the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, Final Fantasy XIII. In English, a narrator explains a corruption that seems to plaguing the land. “Those tainted by the outside were exiled,” he explains.

Earlier trailers highlighted Lightning, but the trailer at TGS showed off a number of new characters, environments and creatures. A gunman that seems to have specific mastery over water shoots a crystal, creating a massive water summon. Paths of ice form in the sky, as he rides along on a motorcycle. Certainly, a spectacle to behold. Then a massive African-inspired scene provides a stark contrast to the futuristic environments we’ve seen of the game so far. Fantastic Mammoth-like beasts walk across a river in a scene that could’ve been ripped out of a Afrika gone slightly astray. Debuting in this new trailer was a brand new female character that stands, staring at a frozen planet orbiting in the sky. The trailer ends with a proud proclamation “PS3 Only,” to silence any doubters.

Once again, we were stunned by the visuals of the trailer, which went beyond the quality of most Hollywood productions. The new dry landscape showcased provides reassurance that the game will not remain stagnant in its visual look. However, in spite of the incredible excitement generated by the trailer, we were surprised that a different game in the Square Enix theater stole the show.

If you’re a publisher trying to keep mum about a “brand new” controller functionality from Sony, it might be best not to put those controllers into the hands of members of the press and set ‘em a rumblin’. The big sticker on the back that says “RUMBLE” doesn’t exactly help either. IGN spotted the new, much rumored version of the SIXAXIS while at a pre-Tokyo Game Show event, playing a demo of Burnout Paradise. IGN says the controller is notably heavier than the SIXAXIS, but otherwise looks identical, and the rumble was comparative to a PS2 controller. An announcement is expected tomorrow at Kaz Hirai’s keynote.

6th Grader's Game Company Gets $6.5m in Funding At 12 years old, most of us could barely raise our textbook-filled backpacks, never mind $6.5 million in funding. But that’s exactly what Silicon Valley 6th grader Arjun Mehta has done. Way back when he was in 5th grade (last year), Mehta started PlaySpan in the family garage. PlaySpan is a service that works with gaming companies to sell virtual goods inside of their online worlds — rather fitting since the money to start PlaySpan came from the sale of virtual items Mehta had won by finishing quests in various games. Though the company has yet to launch, it claims to have already signed up seven game companies as customers.

The new influx of cash from Easton Capital, Menlo Ventures and other investors in Asia brings with it some new playmates for Mehta in the form of new board members from the aforementioned companies.

It’s not yet clear whether PlaySpan’s new offices will be located in a tree house or a fort.
