Infolink phone from GE

The Infolink cordless phone from GE is pretty strange as it does more than facilitate conversations - it comes with the ability to hook up to the Internet, downloading weather, news, and your favorite RSS feeds for your perusal. These feeds can be customized so you’ll always stay tuned with what you want. I suppose this is great for sports buffs who must have the latest results on hand. The Infolink is a DECT phone, so you won’t have to worry too much over interference problems. A couple of Infolink handsets and a base station will retail for $180 when they roll out this coming October.

Although we still haven’t been able to see what the new and improved Hulk will look like in action, thanks to a whole new batch of set pics, we now get a taste of the green monster’s destruction. Some dude named Ronin Kengo snapped a bunch of pics that show Yonge Street in Toronto done up to look like the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. And let’s just say said neighborhood appears to have had a very large beast stroll through for a little car crunching. The dude has all the pics up over on his blog, and my favorites have to go to the two of three that feature a smashed-up car sticking out the side of a NYC bus (one of which you can see to the right of your screen and click on for a larger version). Damn, I’d love to know how long it took to set that shot up — nevermind what it will look like when the scene unfolds on the big screen.

Apart from the aforementioned “car sticking out of bus” photo, there are a few others which show a NYC street lined with cars that appear to have been stepped on by Hulk, as well as a shot of the famed Apollo Theater (not the real one, of course) and a few NYC-style shops (gotta include the pizza place!). Additionally — and this should really excite you hardcore Hulk fans — Superherohype confirms (via a Variety story I cannot find at the moment) that none other than Lou Ferrigno will have a role in The Incredible Hulk. Ferrigno, as you should be aware, starred as The Incredible Hulk back in the day opposite Bill Bixby’s Bruce Banner. No word yet on who he will play, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a character who, at some point, comes face to face with the green dude — this way they can adequately play up the “Oooh, look at that cameo” moment. The Incredible Hulk will stomp its way into theaters on June 13.

Yeah, Apple fired a warning shot in Europe with this morning’s O2 announcement, but there’s sure a lot more on our minds that Apple didn’t address at the mini press conference. Here are some of them in convenient bullet point form. The things Apple didn’t announce today:

  • Which carrier will be carrying the iPhone in France (we hear it’s Orange).
  • Which carrier will be carrying the iPhone in Germany (we hear it’s T-Mobile, or maybe Vodafone).
  • Is O2 seriously paying out 40% of plan revenue for exclusivity?
  • Why anyone will pay for flat rate data when only 30% of the UK will be using EDGE.
  • 3G iPhone.

Got anything to add? Let it all out in the comments. Rumor is the Germany announcement could come tomorrow, followed by France on Thursday, with T-Mobile and Orange doing the respective honors, but we would’ve rather gotten all this hashed out today and a little more sleep the rest of this week.

Warning: Video Contains Some Explicit Language

Love him or hate him, comedian Bill Maher makes some pretty amusing observations about the recent iPhone price cut in this clip from his HBO show, ‘Real Time with Bill Maher.’ As he sees it, Apple didn’t cut the price of the iPhone, it repealed the nerd tax!

Watch and enjoy. Or, watch and brood.

After hearing the great news that we’re getting 13 new Blu-ray releases this week, even more good news has leaked out. Target is reportedly doubling its Blu-ray shelf space as the retail giant continues to favor Sony’s HD format.

According to Video Business, Target has upped its previous 12 Blu-ray title slots to 24 slots and even more at some stores. “You’re going to get a clear message when you see more Blu-ray than HD DVD, and you’re going to think something is up,” said Andy Parsons, from the Blu-ray Disc Association. “The message to the consumer is that one of these [formats] is dominating. You’ll go with the masses and pick titles from the one that is likely to win.”

We certainly hope Parsons is right. It’s time to end this senseless battle!

Early this week, I met with Michael Gregoire, who is the CEO of Taleo Corp. (NASDAQ: TLEO). His company is a leader in HR software.

Instead of talking about the fine points of his industry or tech gobbledygook, he spent most of his time talking about the look-and-feel of his software and website. “If you go to Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) or Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN), do you need a user manual?” he asked. “Of course not. It’s natural. The technology doesn’t get in the way.”

In fact, over the past year, Gregoire has had a laser focus on improving his software’s usability, and based on what I’ve seen so far, it’s been well worth it. Interestingly enough, the system has the feel of Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPod, not a boring HR application. “We think design and usability will be a key differentiator going forward and very important for growth,” said Gregoire.

So how can a small business make sure its products showcase good design and ease of use? Some entrepreneur’s I’ve interviewed recently told me how they have been able to follow what I would call ‘the iPod way.’

Anthony Franco is the president of EffectiveUI. His company designs and develops killer websites for customers like eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY), Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) and General Electric (NYSE: GE). He argues that it is a mistake to overload your products with extra features that only the most sophisticated customers care about.

“We are big believers in the 80-20 rule,” said Franco. “Basically, you can’t have everything in your initial design. If anything, you want to focus on several key features to showcase your company and try to appeal to a broad audience.”

A big mistake, according to Franco, is to listen to your power users. Why? The reason is that they want too many features, and they are usually the most vocal about things.

Another recommendation: test your site. “Before going live, you need to get some beta users,” said Franco. “It’s important that you watch how they use the site. Is there confusion? What are they attracted to? I also think it’s a good idea to have customers and prospective customers be a part of the initial test.”

This type of testing was key for EffectiveUI’s development of eBay’s desktop application. “It was an iterative process. Actually, if things didn’t work, eBay was willing to scrap it. That was critical to the success.”

For entrepreneurs working on a new product, the emphasis should be on coming up with a simple, elegant design that works well.

Hacker comes clean

Over a year has passed after David Maynor claimed to have found a method to take over a Macintosh computer by exploiting a flaw in the system’s wireless card, and he has decided to publish the nitty gritty on the situation. These details are available in the September issue of Uninformed.org, an online hacking magazine, describing in great length on “how to run unauthorized software on a Macintosh by taking advantage of a flaw in Apple’s AirPort wireless drivers.” This bug was patched in September 21 with no credit given to Maynor for discovering it as Apple’s engineers took the glory instead, laying claim to stumbling across this exploit during an internal audit. If you’re interested to know further, Maynor has revealed that he will publish a second paper in the near future on Uniformed.org to explain how to write software that will run on a compromised system.

apple dumplings

The only experience I have with apple dumplings is the 1975 Don Knotts/Tim Conway Disney comedy The Apple Dumpling Gang. I haven’t seen the movie in 30 years, but I believed it involved orphans and prospecting for gold? There was also a sequel, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, which I’ve never seen. But I digress…

It’s National Apple Dumpling Day. This site has a recipe for what they call “the world’s best apple dumplings.” Here’s another recipe from mealsmatter.org, and here’s one from southernfood.about.com.

We know that Nintendo’s Wii has been a massive hit with families, but we’ve also noticed a growing trend with the physically-interactive game system that is honestly a bit of a surprise — apparently, senior citizens can’t put their Wiimotes down. Similar to stories we’ve seen before, the UK’s gossip rag The Sun is reporting that seniors at the Sunrise Home in Birmingham, UK, have taken to the console like super-old fish to water. The pensioners at the institution have been engaging in knock-down, drag-out contests in Wii Sports — playing tennis, boxing, and bowling with a cut-throat competitiveness not seen since the Dark Ages. Barrie Edgar, 88, one of the home’s residents said, “It’s great fun. We’ve only had it a few days but we can’t put it down.” Mr. Edgar then glanced at Tilda Montgomery, another Sunrise Home occupant and exclaimed, “Prepare to be pwned, you old bird.”

[Thanks, Arnar]

Gregg DeGuire/WireImage

When you see your favorite stars, like Eva Longoria, hitting the Emmys red carpet on Sunday night, there is one man making sure their makeup looks perfect. Napoleon Perdis (and his eponymous cosmetics line) is the official makeup sponsor of the Emmys and will be touching up everyone from the ladies of Desperate Housewives to Debra Messing as they hit the red carpet. We chatted with Napoleon, who says being on the Emmys red carpet is a “dream come true,” on his top three makeup tips for braving the cameras on the big night!

-Use an all-in-one makeup, like Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish, for touching up your makeup. You can use it for concealer, powder, foundation — you won’t have to worry that there are three different colors of makeup on your face! Just remember to build up coverage, instead of putting tons on at once.

-Line lips last, after putting on your lipstick. When you put on liner last, it helps maintain the shape of the lips and keeps the color from bleeding.

-Keep a highlighter, like Napoleon Perdis Light Patrol, with you at all times. You can use it for eyes, lips, cheeks — for an extra hit of brightness on the face wherever you need it.
