Much to the delight of fans, daytime TV actors tend to stay on shows a long time, but actor James Reynolds’s 22 years of playing Commissioner Abe Carver on ‘Days of Our Lives‘ is a record. The Emmy-winning Reynolds has logged more hours on television than any other African-American actor on any show, much less a soap. Of course, all that time on the away from home on the set means he’s succumbed to the pleasures and conveniences that portable gadgets such as cell phones, iPods, and computers can offer (he’s a particularly big fan of online fantasy sports leagues). Reynolds recently underwent heart valve replacement surgery, but he’s better now, thank goodness, and was kind enough to answer our latest Switched Questionnaire.

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?

Although I have a TV in my room. I take an iPod and a book. I never go anywhere without a book.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

I have a Palm phone that gets e-mail and does a lot of stuff. I don’t like that their software is so much on the phone that I can’t learn it all.

Who’s the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

One more feature I don’t use. I am the last living American that doesn’t text.

Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?

I love my online fantasy sports teams. I play basketball, football, and baseball. I check out eBay and Amazon.

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop (or any other gadget)?

I get annoyed anytime they don’t work. Then I find out it’s my fault.

Name one thing you wish your iPod/cellphone/laptop (any gadget) could do that it doesn’t do now?

In 1879 it was suggested the patent department be abolished so nothing new could “possibly” be invented. I consider so much of what I take for granted as magic that I can’t think of anything new.

You’re stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?

An iPod, charger, and a really long extension cord.

What’s the most-played song or artist on your iPod?

Actually podcasts of NPR’s ‘Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!’ and ‘A Prairie Home Companion.’

BlackBerry, Sidekick, or Treo?

I believe a BlackBerry works around the world so I would have to say a BlackBerry.

Did you get an iPhone?

No, and getting an iPhone is not in my immediate plans, but down the road for sure. I say it out loud because I have a birthday coming up soon.

What’s the longest time you’ve ever spent playing a video game in one sitting and what game was it?

I have spent several hours playing ‘Warlord.’ It is very involving and hard to tear myself away from.

Mac or PC?

I have a Mac, which I love. It is colorful, fast, and just fun to work on.

It looks like AMD’s trying to make some friends in the open source community, with it today announcing some new drivers for Linux along with some details on its plans to open up its drivers to the community at large. Set to be released later this month, the new Catalyst 7.9 software will add Linux support for the ATI Radeon HD 2000 series of graphics processors, along with other “major performance improvements across the board,” which it says should result in a “90 per cent improvement in such popular titles as Doom 3 and Quake 4.” What’s more, AMD also reportedly took advantage of this week’s Kernel Summit to announce a fairly major push to go open source with its drivers. As part of that initiative, AMD will apparently work with the open source community develop a 2D and 3D driver that supports all the latest Radeon chipsets, and it’ll even release documentation to let anyone (with the necessary skills) build some drivers from scratch. According to blogger Christopher Blizzard, however, that will apparently be a rather slow process, with the documentation for the 2D drivers coming first, and the 3D docs coming some time after that. Still, we’re guessing that there’s quite a few folks that now know what they’ll be doing with their free time for the foreseeable future.

Office Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Sony have updated the PlayStation.Blog to tell us that two new firmware updates will be available - one for PS3 and one for PSP. PS3 version 1.93 will (supposably) fix all problems caused by v1.92. The latest firmware update has prevented people from accessing the PlayStation Network, including the PlayStation Store and, probably most importantly, blocked people from playing Warhawk online.

We’re happy to see that a fix will be available “in the next few days” as a couple of PS3Fanboy.com bloggers have fallen foul of the 1.92 curse ourselves. We can’t wait to start playing Warhawk again, but how are we going to fit it in between Heavenly Sword and sleep? Can Sony release a new firmware that fixes that for us?

Today at Interact 2007 I presented my research conducted from 2002 until 2005. I presented the story of a Graphical User Interface that became a Tangible User Interface. The presentation introduced a novel approach to collecting, editing and performing visual and sound clips in real time.
The cumbersome process of capturing and editing becomes fluid in the improvisation of a story, and accessible as a way to create a final movie. It was shown how a graphical interface created for video production informs the design of a tangible environment that provides a spontaneous and collaborative approach to video creation, selection and sequencing.
Iterative design process, participatory design sessions and workshop observations with 10-12 year old users from Sweden and Ireland were presented and discussed. The limitations of interfacing video capture, editing and publication in a self-contained platform were addressed.

I uploaded my presentation in .pdf format here

A chalkboard listing available cheese
It seems that everyone who read Barbara Kingsolver’s memoir Animal, Vegetable, Miracle this summer has been bitten by the cheesemaking bug. I have to admit that I had an itch in that direction when I finished her book (I’ve been intrigued by making cheese at home since reading the Little House on the Prairie books when I was a kid). However, I’ve only ever pondered the possibility, over at A Chicken in Every Granny Cart, they didn’t just think about it, they took action and whipped up not one type of cheese but two. And they have plans for more. I am inspired.

Want to step aboard the spankin’ new, Godzilla-sized Airbus A380, but don’t have a trip planned on Korean Air anytime soon? No worries. Aving.net has you covered with a full-blown photo tour of the new planes, including shots of the cockpit, wine bar, first class accommodations and even the latrines.

We do not recommend this photo gallery to anyone about to board one of the sardine-cans-with-wings we’re stuck with here in the U.S.

I don’t know if this is real or not, but I’ve been told that in Korean baseball games you can fight as much as you want, without punishment, as long as you do this:

(if you can’t see the video, click here)

Seems plausible, although as a fan I’d probably get pretty annoyed after the 2nd or 3rd fight.
