Just in time for the start of the first Sunday of NFL action, EA SPORTS has released a roster update for Madden 08 on next gen consoles, which includes the PS3. The update includes the latest rosters as well as ratings adjustments for some players.

The guys over at X360 Fanboy also note that Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has been removed from the game. We’ll spare you from the over-used dog fighting jokes, but instead we will give you a nice gameplay tip. Vick’s departure makes cover boy Vince Young the fastest QB in the league, making him your best choice for running the “bootleg every down and hope to catch the defense sleeping” offense.

Starbcks Wifi Coffee Orders

Starbucks, the second home of thousands of displaced workers and students, just made it easier to order a coffee while whiling away the hours at one of its locations. If you’re on the Wi-Fi network at a Starbucks, you can simply pull up a browser screen and order a fresh cup o’ joe. Of course, you still have to pay for the thing, and we’d be surprised if the cranky staff actually brings the coffee to you, but we are at least one step closer to not having to move at all when working and cranking on the caffeine.

Considering last week’s deal with Apple iTunes, it seems as though Starbucks has figured out how to make an extra buck or two out of those of us who think we’re there just to use the air conditioning and Wi-Fi. We patiently await the ability to schedule coffee orders ahead of time using an online interface.

Ok, so we can confirm Sony’s just pushed out the PlayStation 3 v1.92 update, the first new firmware in over a month. The trouble is they’re not telling us what’s been changed, fixed, updated, added, removed, improved, etc. Anyone seen anything different? Let us know in comments such that we all might benefit from your eagle-eyedness.

Update: The update appears limited to performance enhancements for the PlayStation Store and PS2 game support — minor updates in line with a point-0-0 release.

[Thanks, RicanJoe and Matt]

OQO improves on Model 02 Ultra

OQO has refreshed the Model 02 Ultra UMPC that comes with a speedy 1.6GHz processor and the choice between a 120GB hard drive or a 32GB SSD. Obviously using the latter will result in faster boot and load times (up to 50%) as well as increased battery life and durability, but you will also have to dig deep to purchase one. The WWAN in the Model 02 Ultra has also been upgraded to 1.4Mbps EV-DO Rev, and all this despite the entry level price drop to $1,299 from $1,499. This updated 02 are currently on sale in the UK from resellers like Expansys.

While commodity and emerging market stocks have dominated the higher-end of the stock-performance charts this decade, if you look closely at the recent stock market correction, a massive sector rotation is occuring.

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) is up 26.7% for the year, Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ: CSCO) is up 15%, Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL) is up 18%, Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) is up 61%, Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) is up 11%, International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE: IBM) is up 20% and Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ: RIMM) is up 95%, noted Eric Savitz in this yesterday’s Barron’s “Technology Trader.” VMware Inc (NYSE: VMW), the recent IPO home run, is up 136% since beginning trading publicly.

The average technology fund is up 10% for the year, versus 3% for the S&P 500, according to Morningstar.

That is some serious food for thought. As a reminder, the great 1990’s bull market ended with tech taking the lead in the latter stages of the immensely profitable run. The economy slowed in the mid-part of the 1990s and when the economy picked up, money flowed into tech and telecom. It looks like the stage might be set for a similar move this decade.

Remember that 1.92 update? The one that did nothing for Europe and may have messed up the connection to Warhawk servers?

All is forgiven! 1.92 means kittens for everyone! Yes, this truly is the power of Cell. Well, not really, but the guys over at Penny Arcade sure wish so. Lair fans may also be wishing that the comic would come true. People allergic to cat dander however, maybe not so much.

Carnival Games

Carnival Games is just what it sounds to be: a selection of carnival booth games that you play using the Wiimote in (sometimes) interesting ways. You even collect prize tickets to redeem for in-game prizes like goldfish (these ones don’t die in the bag on the way home, thankfully).

While this isn’t a game that will wow you or your kids with amazing graphics or innovation, Carnival Games is incredibly accessible — just about anyone will be able to play these games. After all, who hasn’t shot metal ducks in a shooting gallery or tried to throw a football through a moving tire?

The variety of Carnival Games’ minigames is both a blessing and a curse. While some offer a nice mix of challenge and fun, others end up way too easy. For instance, we were able to get a perfect score on the Ski Ball game on the first try without any sense of challenge — the ball just dropped into the 50-point hole seemingly every time. That disappointment, however, was assuaged by a Duck Hunt-like shooting gallery (pictured above) that we ended up playing for a good 30 minutes.

Don’t expect amazing graphics or an engaging story in Carnival Games. If you are burnt out on Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Mario Party 8, Carnival Games brings a slew of new challenges (20, to be exact) for you, your kids, and even grandma.

Hey, everyone getting amped about the Centro — all seven of you (and yes, there are at least a couple Engadget staffers in that tight group) — your wait might be a little longer than expected. Contrary to previous suggestions that Palm’s European announcement on the 12th of September would be for that bizarre little beast with the tiny keyboard, Palm’s Stephanie Richardson has posted a brief note on the official Palm blog to let everyone know that “It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s not Centro.” If it’s any consolation, she specifically uses the phrase “new device,” so we’ll apparently see something new here — we’re just back to square one trying to figure out what the heck it is. Sure ain’t a Foleo!

Update: As WMExperts speculates, the Windows Mobile-based Gandolf seems like the leading candidate here, largely on account of the Vodafone-branded pictures we’ve seen floating around. Same polarizing styling, different platform; pick your poison!

Solar Bottle purifies drinking water

Now this Solar Bottle is one neat idea - it was specially designed to obtain the maximum effect from a natural phenomenon that will be able to purify disease-ridden water. Water, when left in a transparent PET bottle and under direct sunlight, will be purified to a certain extent courtesy of heat and irradiation from UV-A rays. Designed by Alberto Medo and Francisco Gomez Paz, you can stack this bottle on top of one another easily, where each individual container can hold up to 4 liters of water. No idea on when this design will be put into production, but better sooner than later I say.
