Three years ago yesterday, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) became public. Since then, those investors who could get past the seemingly high valuation of $85 per share have been generously rewarded with a hefty return of 478%. Google has been a perfect example of the need to look forward when analyzing growth companies. At the time of its IPO, value investors (rightfully so) appeared on CNBC to tell investors that Google was overvalued. However, because Google was able to grow its earnings per share at such an unbelievable rate, the stock’s IPO price represents just 8x last year’s earnings and 5.5x this year’s. Given the choice to buy Google at $85 per share now I’d bet every value, growth, stupid and smart investor would jump on the opportunity to pick up the stock.

But Google hasn’t been the only incredible performer during the last three years. In fact, Business Week has an interesting article listing the companies and stocks that outperformed Google during the last three years. You’ll find that many of these stocks rose due to some huge underlying trend that these companies were able to ride out for powerful growth.

For example, high oil prices have been a huge trend for profits. Frontier Oil (NYSE: FTO) was able to return 611% to investors over the last three years as the company rode the increased oil prices to make huge refining profits. Foster Wheeler (NYSE: FWLT), with its focus on energy, pharmaceuticaul and environmental infrastructure products, was able to return 557%.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), riding the iPod and now iPhone and Mac computer trends, has provided patient, long-term investors with 638% over the last three years. With very interesting trends remaining for the company (market-share increases for the Mac computer segment, iPhone popularity, and so on) this stock could continue to outperform but I’d wait for a more attractive valuation before becoming a long-term investor in the stock.

NutriSystem (NASDAQ: NTRI) has ridden the “get-skinny” trend over the last three years returning 3000% to investors. I suggested that NutriSystem was “playing the guidance game” after it reported earnings in the end of July. Since then, shares of the stock are down almost 11%. With an attractive valuation, the stock seems interesting at first glance but I think I’d avoid it.

Huge market outperformers come in all shapes and sizes. The problem is I doubt many investors held any of the names the entire time, and I bet many felt the compulsion to take profits, as would I.

What are going to be the strongest performers during the next three years? I think lululemon (NASDAQ: LULU), a stock I’m going to feature later this week, certainly has huge potential. Comment away!

DivX’s Apple TV, but smarter

We were lucky to be invited to DivX technology demo driven by DivX co-founder Jérôme Rota. The prototype presented was an efficient, low-cost, networked media player running at 720p resolution. The box itself was just an example of what manufacturers could do with the DivX platform. The interface is sleek and all and a few things caught my attention:

The media player needs to be networked to a computer and software need to be installed on that PC to communicate with the player… some of you might complain because the device should be able to talk to a DLNA network drive, but: most consumers do have a PC but they don’t have a network drive. Secondly, the device in question could eventually be sold for less than $99 within a year of production – in my opinion. That’s a lot less than the $299 Apple TV.

The user interface was quite nice. Much better than what we usually get in this type of device (think Apex, Linksys…), but the crunchy part is that all the user-interface (UI) rendering is done on the PC and sent to the player as very small DivX files! That’s a good idea that enables good graphics and UI on cheap hardware.

Finally, DivX has an API that will let users create their own plug-ins/applications to handle multimedia content or to create casual games. I don’t think that any other media player does this.

There’s no denying that the majority of Americans aren’t very good in Geography or World History, but do you know why? I’ve always wondered this myself, and now thanks to Miss Teen South Carolina, I finally understand:

Who would have thought South Africa plays such a vital role in our children’s Geography skills? With such a vividly concise and globally significant theory, I envision a Nobel Peace Prize in her future.

Ever notice people doing their makeup in transit (or are you that beauty offender)? Whether on the subway or stuck in gridlock, there always seems to be someone frantically swiping mascara or dabbing on lip gloss. If you just don’t have time to ponder which shadow goes with which gloss in the morning, try using Stila’s The Perfect Face Kit. Complete with an eye shadow, eyeliner smudge pot and brush, mascara, lip & cheek color and a lip glaze, it’s everything you need to pull together a pretty, polished look before you leave the house without any muss, fuss or thought. Available at sephora.com, $45.

Project Runway Winner Stylizes Gadget CasesFor women sick of lugging around their laptops in those ugly black and corporate pleather cases, there are choices for more more stylish totes. Last week, we showed Claiborne’s offerings. This week, lesser-known but certainly more hip designer Chloe Dao pitches a line of laptop and gadget cases.

Chloe won season two of ‘Project Runway’ and is lending her eye to some brashly colored but still sophisticated cases. They range from $19.99 iPod and phone cases up to just $29.99 for a laptop sleeve. For this price, don’t expect any exotic fabrics or hides, but if you’re looking to accessorize your gadgets like you would accessorize yourself, Dao offers a good way to do it without breaking the bank.

Dramatic Prairie Dog -- The Movies

Can you remember what you did at your desk before the internet came along? Please don’t say you did actual work, although I’m pretty sure that was the case. I remember reading a report somewhere that said the TV show MASH was responsible for dropping productivity in offices because it taught you that it’s good to be friends with people you work with. What happened before then? Gladiator matches at lunch?

Anyhow, thanks to the birth of the best time-waster on earth (take that, television) we get viral videos galore. It’s a shared cultural experience, and you’ll be getting questions from your grandkids like “Grandpop, do you remember when you first saw ‘The Star Wars Kid’?” They’ll marvel as you recollect the tale. Of course by then the internets will probably be beamed directly into their brains, but I digress.

One of the latest viral videos (although at a month old, it’s practically in the stone ages on ‘the internets’) is “The Dramatic Prairie Dog.” At five seconds long, it’s also one of the shortest videos ever to make the rounds. It’s pretty simple video, but the real genius is in setting it to the dramatic music sting. As happens with these vids, people have started making their own remixes, and I’ve decided to round up the best of the bunch. They had to be short, they had to be good, and it helped if they were even more dramatic. Check after the break for your “Dramatic Prairie Dog Movie Tie-In Extravaganza.” My favorite is the very last one.

As expected, Verizon and Sprint have given Motorola a venue for its latest and greatest hardware today, releasing the Q9m Windows Mobile smartphone and RAZR 2 V9m flip respectively. Though the media centric Q9m’s $350 price on a two-year contract ain’t exactly pocket change, it’s interesting to note that it whittles right down to a more manageable $250 after rebate — a mere $20 more than you’ll pay for an old school Q Black. Meanwhile, minions from the other side of the CDMA camp (yes, we mean Sprint) have prepped the V9m for launch today at the same $250 price point after rebate, making it the first of several US carriers committed to a RAZR 2 launch to actually get it out of the door. If everything goes the way we expect it to, both of these devices will land on the other carrier in the next few weeks, so the “grass is greener on the other side” effect should be kept to a bare minimum here.

[Thanks, Dan and Boy Genius]

Europe isn’t the only territory getting the Folklore demo this week. We’re getting in on Game Republic’s interesting action/adventure title as well. We’re also getting a ton of movie and videogame trailers, with the highlight being the Metal Gear Solid 4 bosses trailer — so damn cool. Check out this week’s updates to the PS Store:

  • Folklore “Sneak Preview” demo (free)
  • Heavenly Sword “Making of” No. 3 (free)
  • Heavenly Sword Anime No. 3 (free)
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots “Beast Corp” trailer (free)
  • Haze trailer (free)
  • TimeShift trailer (free)
  • Movie trailers: Things we Lost in the Fire, Vantage Point, National Treasure: Book of Secrets ($5 a piece)

Alright, just kidding about the movie trailers costing $5 dollars — they’re free too. This is one big batch of free goodies from Sony to us. It’s great seeing Sony releasing weekly demos and unlike some weeks, this batch of videogame trailers is pretty solid. Time to start queuing up some downloads!

late summer cocktails from thebar.com
Wow. Is it late August already? No matter how much we pout, the Summer is coming to a close. The days get shorter, the temperature gets cooler (in most normal parts of the country - here in LA, it still gets into the 90s), and we move our “entertaining” indoors. Right?

No! I refuse, my friends, refuse! I am a clingy girl, and I am going to hang onto the last rays of the summer sun if it burns the skin on my shoulders to a bacon-y crisp.

thebar.com makes it easy with a few cocktails, Pineapple Orange Margarita and Rangpur Madras, that will keep that summer vibe going, even if it’s me standing by myself in my living room in a pair of sunglasses and a straw hat sipping on these cocktails (I am not a fan of tequila nor of gin, but look at how pretty the cocktails are!)
Recipes after the jump.
